What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before changing Windows, identify the application that is requesting xpcapicom.dll.
- Which program displays the error? Check the executable name in the message or Task Manager.
- When does it happen? Note whether it appears when launching an engineering application, during startup, or when opening an old project.
- Where is the program installed? The application folder is more useful than the Windows system folders.
- Is the program 32-bit or 64-bit?
xpcapicom.dllis identified in public file records as a Win32 component, so a 32-bit application may be required. - Was the program recently uninstalled, moved, restored, or quarantined by antivirus software?
- Does the error say “module could not be found” rather than simply “file not found”? That can indicate a missing dependency rather than a missing
xpcapicom.dll.
xpcapicom.dll is the xPC Target API COM Module, part of The MathWorks’ legacy xPC Target Embedded Option software. It is not a Windows system file. The safest repair is to restore the original MathWorks application, or the third-party engineering program that bundled it, rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What xpcapicom.dll does
The file belongs to the old xPC Target software family. Its COM interface allowed host-side programs written with technologies such as Visual Basic, Visual C++, Java, or scripting languages to communicate with an xPC Target real-time application.
The component was used alongside xpcapi.dll and other files from the original installation. That matters because copying only xpcapicom.dll may leave the application without another required file or runtime dependency.

xPC Target is legacy software. MathWorks replaced it with Simulink Real-Time, and custom do-it-yourself xPC Target systems are no longer generally supported. A current Simulink Real-Time installation should not automatically be assumed to contain or replace this older DLL.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely solution and should be attempted before registering files or repairing Windows.
Find the application that needs the file
- Reproduce the error.
- Read the title bar and message carefully.
- If the program closes immediately, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Look for the executable that appears while the error is displayed.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
- Record the application name and installation folder.
If the error appears every time Windows starts:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry associated with the old engineering software.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
- Also check Task Scheduler by opening Start and searching for
Task Scheduler. - Review Task Scheduler Library for tasks that launch the obsolete application.
Do not remove a startup item merely to hide the error if the program is still needed. First identify and repair the application.
Repair through Windows Settings
Some older applications expose a repair option even when Windows does not.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the MathWorks product or the engineering application that reports the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
- Complete the installer.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original application again.
If there is no repair option, uninstalling and reinstalling may be necessary. Before uninstalling, locate the original licensed MathWorks installer, installation media, or the installer supplied by the equipment or software vendor.
Reinstall from trusted media
Use the original installer associated with the application. That may be:
- A licensed MathWorks installation package.
- An archived installation maintained by your organization.
- Installation media supplied with an engineering product.
- A vendor-controlled installer for software that included xPC Target components.
Install the complete product or the relevant xPC Target option. Do not select a minimal installation if the application requires the COM API and related files.
After installation:
- Start the application from its normal shortcut.
- Open the project or workflow that originally failed.
- Confirm that the error no longer appears.
- If the program still fails, note the new error text. It may identify another missing dependency.
Reinstalling the parent application remains the definitive fix when the DLL was deleted, incompletely installed, or removed with an older MATLAB or xPC Target release.

Security software can remove or quarantine an old executable component, especially when the software has not been maintained for current Windows versions.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries around the time the error started.
- Look for
xpcapicom.dllor the parent application directory.
If the file is listed, do not restore it automatically. First confirm that:
- It came from the original MathWorks or software-vendor installation.
- The application is still required.
- The entire application directory is trusted.
- The installer or installation media is available if restoration fails.
If you restore a quarantined file, scan the complete application folder and run the program again. If you cannot verify the file’s origin, reinstall the application from trusted vendor media instead.
Third-party antivirus products have their own quarantine and history screens. Open the product’s main window and review those records before allowing an old DLL.
Fix 3: Restore the COM registration, if the application requires it
xpcapicom.dll is not an ordinary Windows library in this context. The archived xPC Target API documentation identifies it as a COM component and documents registration with regsvr32.
Only perform this step with an authentic DLL from the original application installation.
Locate the original DLL
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the MathWorks or dependent application folder.
- Search that folder for
xpcapicom.dll. - Confirm that the file is located with the application’s other xPC Target files, rather than in
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64.
If the file is absent, registration cannot repair the installation. Return to Fix 1.
Register it on 32-bit Windows
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Change to the directory containing the DLL. For example:
cd /d "C:PathToTheApplication"
- Register the component:
regsvr32 xpcapicom.dll
- Select OK when Windows reports that
DllRegisterServersucceeded. - Restart the application.
Register it on 64-bit Windows
Because public records identify xpcapicom.dll as a Win32 component, a 32-bit application may need the 32-bit registration utility. On 64-bit Windows, that utility is normally located in SysWOW64, despite the confusing folder name.

%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:fullpathtoxpcapicom.dll"
Replace the path with the actual location of the original file.
If the application is 32-bit, this is generally the appropriate registration command. Using the 64-bit utility against a 32-bit COM DLL can produce an architecture error or register the wrong registry view.
A successful registration message means the COM registration completed. It does not prove that every dependency required by the application is present.
If registration reports an error
If you see an error such as The specified module could not be found, the missing item may be a dependency of xpcapicom.dll, not the named DLL itself. Microsoft documents this distinction for regsvr32 and LoadLibrary failures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not download another copy and keep registering replacements. Instead:
- Confirm that the DLL came from the original application.
- Repair or reinstall the parent program.
- Check whether the application’s other xPC Target files are present.
- Confirm that the application and DLL have matching 32-bit architecture.
- Check antivirus quarantine.
- Look for a more specific dependency error in the application’s installation log.
Fix 4: Resolve a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
A 64-bit program cannot load a 32-bit in-process DLL. If the calling application is 64-bit but its COM dependency is 32-bit, registration alone will not make the application compatible.

To identify the application architecture:
- Start the affected program, if possible.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process may be marked with a suffix such as *32.
If the application is 32-bit:
- Use the 32-bit
regsvr32command shown above on 64-bit Windows. - Keep the DLL with the application’s original files.
- Use the matching 32-bit release of the engineering software.
If the application is 64-bit and expects a 32-bit in-process COM server, reinstall the correct application build or consult the software vendor. Do not attempt to convert the DLL into a 64-bit file.
Do not place the file in System32 or SysWOW64 as a workaround. Those folders are not general-purpose storage locations for application DLLs, and system-wide copies can cause version conflicts or security problems.
Fix 5: Check whether the application was moved or partially restored
An old program may stop working after its folder is copied to another drive, restored from a backup, or moved without running its installer. COM registration and dependent paths may still point to the old location.
Try this sequence:
- Close the affected application.
- Restore its original installation folder if it was moved.
- Run the application’s installer and select Repair or Modify.
- If no installer is available, reinstall from the original trusted media.
- Register the authentic COM DLL again using the architecture-appropriate command.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application from its normal shortcut.
The archived API documentation indicates that the COM DLL and xpcapi.dll are used together. Restoring only one file is therefore unlikely to be a complete repair.
Fix 6: Address an obsolete MATLAB or xPC Target environment
If the file belongs to an old xPC Target project, the underlying problem may be compatibility rather than one missing file.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Possible symptoms include:
- The application worked only on an older Windows installation.
- The error began after upgrading MATLAB.
- The old target hardware or real-time workflow is no longer recognized.
- Registration succeeds, but the application still cannot start.
- The program reports additional errors after the DLL is restored.
In that situation:
- Record the exact MathWorks product and release used by the project.
- Identify whether the software is xPC Target, xPC Target Embedded Option, or a vendor application built on it.
- Check your organization’s licensed installation media and deployment documentation.
- Ask the software owner or MathWorks about a supported legacy environment.
- Evaluate migration to Simulink Real-Time where appropriate.
Do not assume that installing current Simulink Real-Time will recreate an old xpcapicom.dll installation. Migration compatibility depends on the project, target hardware, MATLAB release, and host application.
Fix 7: Repair broader Windows components
Windows repair commands will not download or recreate xpcapicom.dll, because it is a third-party application component rather than a protected Windows file. They are useful only when other Windows components are also malfunctioning.
First install pending Windows updates and restart the computer. Then:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, that is not evidence that xpcapicom.dll has been restored. Return to the parent-application repair steps.
Recommended Free Tools
Running repeated SFC and DISM scans without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting circular. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it identifies; its free scan shows the findings, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the MathWorks or dependent application remains the definitive fix for this specific DLL.
Fix 8: Check drivers only when the application identifies one
A graphics, hardware-interface, or target-board driver is not the usual cause of a missing xpcapicom.dll. Do not install unrelated drivers simply because a DLL error appears.
Use Device Manager only if the application also reports a hardware or driver problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories relevant to the target hardware.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the status under the General tab.
- Select the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
- Obtain a matching driver from the hardware vendor.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not use Device Manager’s generic driver search as a substitute for the original application installer. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which ones need attention; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. A driver update will not replace a missing xPC Target COM component.

Random DLL download sites are a poor repair source. A downloaded file may contain malware, match a different build, use the wrong architecture, or omit the dependencies and COM registration required by the application. It can also make the program appear fixed while leaving the original damaged installation unresolved.
Use these sources instead:
- The original licensed MathWorks installer.
- Trusted installation media maintained by your organization.
- The vendor installer for the engineering application that included xPC Target.
- A supported migration or repair path provided by MathWorks.
Never copy the file into Windows system folders merely because an online guide recommends it.
If the error still appears
Work through this short checklist:
- Re-read the error and identify the calling executable.
- Confirm that
xpcapicom.dllbelongs to that application’s installation folder. - Repair or reinstall the parent application.
- Check antivirus quarantine and restore only a verified file.
- Confirm whether the application is 32-bit.
- On 64-bit Windows, register the 32-bit DLL with
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe. - If registration reports a missing module, repair dependencies rather than downloading another DLL.
- Check whether the application was copied from another computer or restored from backup.
- Run DISM and SFC only if broader Windows corruption is suspected.
- If the product is xPC Target, investigate a supported legacy environment or migration to Simulink Real-Time.
FAQ
Is xpcapicom.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an application component from The MathWorks’ legacy xPC Target and xPC Target Embedded Option software.
Which program installed xpcapicom.dll?
The original source is xPC Target software from The MathWorks. A separate engineering application may also have bundled the component, so identify the failing executable before repairing anything.
Is xpcapicom.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public file records identify it as Win32. Treat the calling application as potentially 32-bit and use the 32-bit registration utility when registering it on 64-bit Windows.
Should I register every copy of the DLL?
No. Register only an authentic copy belonging to the application that needs it. Registration is relevant here because this file is documented as a COM component, not because all DLLs require registration.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?
The message can refer to a dependency required by the DLL. Repair the original application and its related files before trying another copy.
Will SFC restore xpcapicom.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while xpcapicom.dll belongs to third-party software.
