xspice.dll Not Found: Fix the Multisim Simulation Engine

Length11 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

xspice.dll is part of the XSPICE simulation engine used by Electronics Workbench multiSIM and its later NI Multisim product lineage. If Windows says xspice.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the exact Multisim or Circuit Design Suite installation that launches the failing program.

Do not download this DLL and copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. It is not a Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET file, or hardware driver. The reliable fix is to restore it from the matching official application installer.

Before fixing xspice.dll

Back up your Multisim work before repairing or reinstalling anything. Copy your schematic files, custom SPICE models, databases, configuration files, license information, and any project folders to another location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The relevant files may use extensions such as .ms or .msh, but custom models and databases can be stored elsewhere depending on the Multisim release. If you are unsure where they are, use Windows Search for your project names and back up the folders containing them.

Also record:

  • The exact error message
  • The executable that fails to start
  • The Multisim or Electronics Workbench edition and version
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The installation folder shown by the shortcut

Multiple Multisim versions can coexist. Repair the installation that owns the failing executable, not automatically the newest entry in Apps.

Fix 1: Repair Multisim from Windows

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Repair is the safest first step because it restores missing application files without asking you to find an individual DLL.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 Settings

  1. Right-click Start and select Installed apps. On some Windows 10 systems, select Apps and Features.
  2. Search for Multisim, Electronics Workbench, or Circuit Design Suite.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside the matching entry.
  4. Choose Advanced options if it is available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Start Multisim again after Windows finishes.

If the repair completes successfully, the program should open without the xspice.dll message. Open a test schematic and run a simple simulation to confirm that the simulation engine loads, not merely the program window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some traditional desktop installers do not provide an Advanced options page. Use Control Panel instead:

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Find the NI or Circuit Design Suite entry associated with Multisim.
  5. Select Repair or Change.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.

If Repair is unavailable or the error returns, continue with the exact-version reinstall in Fix 2. Do not use Reset casually. Depending on how the application was packaged, Reset can remove application data and settings.

Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Multisim edition and version

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

A missing DLL often means the installation is incomplete, damaged, partially removed, or affected by a failed update. Reinstalling the correct package restores the application files and their expected dependencies together.

  1. Open Multisim if possible and choose Help > About Multisim.
  2. If Multisim will not open, check the installed entry in Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  3. Note the product edition, version, and whether it belongs to Electronics Workbench or NI Circuit Design Suite.
  4. Open the official NI Multisim download page in your browser.
  5. Select the matching edition and version. Do not choose a newer product merely because it is easier to find.
  6. Prefer the full offline installer when NI provides one for your release.
  7. Download the installer from NI, not from a DLL archive.
  8. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  9. Choose the repair, change, or reinstall option offered by the setup program.
  10. Restart Windows when the installer finishes.

NI distributes different application packages and distinguishes editions and architectures. A 32-bit Multisim installation needs the files supplied for that application. Replacing them with a DLL from a 64-bit package can produce a new “not designed to run on Windows” or “Bad Image” error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After reinstalling, launch the same shortcut that originally failed. Check its Properties and inspect the Target field if you need to confirm which executable is starting. If the program still reports xspice.dll, verify that the installer repaired the same directory rather than installing a second copy elsewhere.

  • Wide Compatibility & Use Cases – Works with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32 and more. Ideal for decoupling, timing, rectification, level shifting, and small-signal switching. Note: observe polarity for electrolytic capacitors/diodes; handle static-sensitive parts appropriately.

If the installer itself reports a damaged or incomplete package, remove the failed download and use the official offline installer. Repeatedly retrying a damaged online package usually does not repair the local payload.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

Security software can remove or quarantine an application file. This is not proof that the file is safe, so do not restore an unknown copy simply because its name matches.

Windows Security

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving Multisim, Electronics Workbench, or xspice.dll.
  5. Expand the event and inspect its path and detection details.

If the quarantined file is shown inside the trusted Multisim installation directory and the installation media came from the official vendor, follow your organization’s security policy before restoring it. Microsoft warns that restoring a detected item can cause it to be detected again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safer recovery is to repair or reinstall Multisim from its official installer. That gives you a vendor-supplied copy and allows security software to scan the complete installation rather than trusting a loose DLL.

If Protection history contains no relevant event, do not add a broad exclusion for the Windows or application directories. Continue to the next fix.

Fix 4: Confirm the application path and architecture

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

Windows normally searches the application directory when a program loads an unpackaged DLL. That means the correct xspice.dll must be beside, or in a directory expected by, the Multisim executable. You can read about the search behavior in Microsoft’s DLL search order documentation.

To inspect the path:

  1. Right-click the Multisim shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
  4. Select Open File Location if that button is available.
  5. Look in the application directory for xspice.dll.

The file may not be present if the installation is damaged. Its absence is a reason to repair or reinstall Multisim, not to copy a replacement from another computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To identify a mismatch:

  1. Right-click the failing executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab and record any product information.
  4. Compare it with the edition and version shown in Multisim or the NI installer.
  5. Check whether the installed package is intended for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows and application components.

A “bad image,” “not designed to run on Windows,” or similar loader message can indicate corruption, an incompatible build, or a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch. Install the matching package instead of forcing Windows to load a file from another release.

If the error changes after a repair, read the new message carefully. It may name a dependent DLL rather than xspice.dll. That means the first missing file was only the visible part of the dependency chain.

Fix 5: Test with another Windows user profile

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

Multisim can start correctly for one Windows account and fail for another if user configuration files, permissions, or profile data are damaged. Reinstalling the program may not remove those files.

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
  2. Select Add account.
  3. Create a temporary local account.
  4. Sign out of your normal account.
  5. Sign in to the temporary account.
  6. Launch Multisim from its installed shortcut.

If Multisim works there, the program installation may be intact. Copying or deleting configuration files blindly can destroy custom models or settings, so first preserve your user data. Recreate the affected profile configuration using the product’s documented settings or contact NI support with the exact version and path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error appears in both accounts, the problem is more likely the application installation, a dependency, antivirus action, or Windows system corruption.

Fix 6: Repair broader Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time

DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing third-party Multisim DLL, so use them when Windows itself is behaving abnormally or the error suggests a damaged dependency.

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Try Multisim again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Multisim after the restart. If both commands report no integrity problems, return to the Multisim repair or exact-version reinstall rather than repeating them.

When manually running DISM and SFC becomes a cycle of waiting without a clear diagnosis, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what it found; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the Multisim application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

Fix 7: Check Windows optional components only when the error points there

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

xspice.dll is not a Windows Feature, so enabling random features is not a direct repair. Check them only if the full error identifies a Windows component or an older application compatibility requirement.

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures and press Enter.
  3. Review the enabled features.
  4. Do not enable items at random.
  5. If the error specifically names a required Windows feature, enable that feature and restart.

Do not treat installing a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, or .NET component as a guaranteed xspice.dll repair. The supplied facts identify this file as part of the Electronics Workbench multiSIM application, not as one of those Microsoft runtimes.

Fix 8: Check hardware drivers only for a separate driver error

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

A hardware driver does not normally provide xspice.dll, and Device Manager will not restore it. Use Device Manager only if the same failure also mentions graphics, audio, licensing hardware, USB hardware, or another device.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category named by the separate error.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties and read the General and Driver tabs.
  6. Use Update driver only when a driver issue is actually reported.
  7. Restart Windows and test Multisim.

Do not uninstall working hardware drivers as a workaround for an application DLL. If Device Manager shows no warning icons and the only error is xspice.dll, return to the Multisim installer path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When checking every driver manually becomes a version-hunting exercise, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its full version performs the driver installation, but a driver update is not a substitute for repairing Multisim when xspice.dll belongs to that application.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-file repair command.

A simulation engine library can be loaded by Multisim without being a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Running commands such as these can therefore produce an error without fixing the installation:

regsvr32 xspice.dll
regsvr32 C:PathToxspice.dll

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL and provides the correct architecture-specific command. For a missing or damaged xspice.dll, repair the application instead.

Why downloading xspice.dll separately is unsafe

A loose DLL download cannot prove that the file matches your Multisim edition, release, language, architecture, dependencies, or digital-signature expectations. It may also be modified, bundled with unwanted software, or simply fail because another dependency is missing.

Copying it to System32, SysWOW64, the Windows directory, or PATH can hide the original problem and cause Windows to load the wrong build. It can also lead to a different error on the next launch.

Use the official NI Multisim or Circuit Design Suite installer that matches the failing application. If you no longer have old installation media, identify the exact edition and version before downloading anything. Older Electronics Workbench installations may require their original installer or license media rather than a current Multisim package.

Causes of xspice.dll errors

Likely cause What it usually means Correct response
Incomplete installation Files were never installed or were partially removed Run Repair, then reinstall the matching version
Failed update The executable and simulation files no longer match Use the exact offline installer
Wrong edition or architecture A 32-bit and 64-bit or release mismatch exists Install the package matching the failing executable
Antivirus quarantine Security software removed or isolated the file Check Protection history, then repair from trusted media
Damaged dependency The dialog names another DLL after the first repair Follow that dependency’s vendor-supported repair path
Corrupt user profile Settings or custom configuration prevents startup Test another profile and preserve user data
Malware or unknown replacement An untrusted file was introduced Scan the system and reinstall from official media

When to use System Restore or contact support

System Restore is a fallback when a restore point clearly predates the failure and your Multisim projects are backed up. It rolls back system files and settings, but it is not a guaranteed replacement for third-party application files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If repair and reinstall still fail:

  1. Record the full error text.
  2. Confirm the executable path.
  3. Check Windows Security Protection history.
  4. Test another Windows profile.
  5. Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application.
  6. Save the exact Multisim version and installer logs.
  7. Contact NI support with those details.

Do not uninstall an old installation until you have backed up schematics, custom models, databases, and license information.

FAQ

Is xspice.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with the XSPICE simulation engine used by Electronics Workbench multiSIM and the later Multisim product lineage. It should not normally be stored in System32 or SysWOW64.

Which program causes the error?

The usual source is Electronics Workbench multiSIM, NI Multisim, or a related Circuit Design Suite installation. Confirm the failing executable’s shortcut and installation path before repairing a product entry.

Is xspice.dll a Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX file?

There is no verified basis for classifying it as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or driver. Treat it as an application file supplied with the simulation software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy xspice.dll into System32?

No. Windows should load the application’s matching copy from the correct installation directory. Copying a random DLL can create an architecture mismatch or expose another missing dependency.

Will SFC or DISM restore xspice.dll?

Usually not. They repair protected Windows components. Use them for broader Windows corruption, then repair or reinstall Multisim for an application-owned file.

What if the error says “Bad Image”?

Repair or reinstall the exact Multisim edition and version. The message can indicate corruption or a wrong architecture, so do not replace the file with an arbitrary 32-bit or 64-bit copy.

Does reinstalling Multisim preserve my projects?

Do not assume that it will. Back up schematics, custom SPICE models, databases, configuration files, and license information before repairing or uninstalling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did a new DLL produce a different error?

The replacement may be the wrong build, or the original problem may involve a dependent DLL. Read the new message and restore the complete vendor installation rather than adding more individual files.

Is regsvr32 the right command?

Generally no. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points; it does not restore missing files or repair a Multisim simulation engine.
