The earlier game introduces Ichiban Kasuga and establishes the relationships, personal history, and RPG systems that make Infinite Wealth more meaningful. Infinite Wealth is designed to be approachable on its own, but its dual-protagonist story—Ichiban alongside Kazuma Kiryu—lands best after Ichiban’s first adventure. Choose Infinite Wealth first only if its Hawaii setting, Kiryu’s return, and larger activity list matter more to you than following the story in order.
The short answer
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the correct starting point for most players. It is Ichiban Kasuga’s introductory game and presents the series’ shift into a turn-based RPG through his perspective. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth continues Ichiban’s journey, brings back Kazuma Kiryu as a second lead, and expands the adventure from familiar Japanese locations to Hawaii.

Infinite Wealth does not require you to have completed the earlier game to understand its basic premise. However, you will meet returning characters, encounter consequences from Ichiban’s first story, and spend time with a protagonist whose personality and loyalties were developed in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Starting with the first game preserves those introductions instead of turning them into backstory.

Why story order favors Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Ichiban’s introduction is the foundation
Yakuza: Like a Dragon centers on Ichiban Kasuga. You learn who he is, why he views loyalty so strongly, and how he reacts when his carefully held beliefs collide with a changed world. That context affects how his decisions and friendships read in Infinite Wealth.

Infinite Wealth assumes that Ichiban is already an established character. It can explain the broad situation, but an explanation is not the same as experiencing the events that made him the person you meet in the sequel. If you care about character arcs, play the first game before the second.
Returning characters have more weight after the first game
Infinite Wealth brings Ichiban together with Kazuma Kiryu. SEGA describes the pair as “Ichiban Kasuga, a man who rises from rock bottom once again, and Kazuma Kiryu, who faces one final battle as he enters his twilight years.” That description signals two parallel arcs rather than a simple handoff from one hero to another.
Kiryu’s presence also connects Infinite Wealth to the wider history of the series. New players can follow the immediate plot, but players who have completed Yakuza: Like a Dragon will understand Ichiban’s side of the partnership without stopping to reconstruct it. The recommended order is therefore about emotional continuity, not a technical requirement.

Infinite Wealth is standalone-friendly, not continuity-free
A sequel can be playable on its own while still rewarding prior knowledge. Infinite Wealth fits that description. Its opening establishes the current situation and gives newcomers enough orientation to proceed, but it is built around the idea that Ichiban has already lived through a major adventure. If you begin with Infinite Wealth, expect references and returning relationships to function as history rather than introductions.
Combat: a shared turn-based foundation with different priorities
Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s live-command RPG battles
SEGA frames the first game’s combat as a “live-command RPG battle.” You select commands for the party, but the action takes place in a changing space rather than on a static menu-only battlefield. The result is a role-playing system that uses jobs, abilities, party composition, and timing while retaining the series’ exaggerated style.

Because the first game is the introduction to this format, it teaches the vocabulary that Infinite Wealth later expands: assembling a party, assigning roles, choosing skills, and thinking about how an encounter’s position affects your options. If you are new to this version of the series, learning those ideas in the first game makes the sequel’s refinements easier to appreciate.
Infinite Wealth adds movement and environmental tactics
PlayStation says Infinite Wealth brings back the earlier game’s turn-based battles while adding freedom of movement and environmental tactics. In practical terms, positioning becomes a more visible part of each turn. The surrounding space and nearby objects can influence how you approach an encounter, so the battle system asks you to consider location as well as commands.

That change makes Infinite Wealth the more expansive combat package, but “more expansive” does not mean “better first game.” The sequel’s extra options are most useful when you already understand the basic rhythm of the first title. Players who prefer a larger tactical toolkit may enjoy Infinite Wealth immediately; players learning the series’ RPG structure will usually have a smoother progression by starting with Ichiban’s first adventure.
Setting, activities, and the appeal of Infinite Wealth
Hawaii changes the scale and atmosphere
Infinite Wealth takes the protagonists across the Pacific to Hawaii while also returning to familiar Tokyo locations. The contrast gives the sequel a broader travel-adventure identity: one part continuation of the Japanese setting, one part new location with its own spaces and activities.
If your main reason for buying the game is to explore Hawaii, you do not need to wait for the first game to become interested. The setting is the clearest argument for choosing Infinite Wealth first. You should simply accept that you will be entering an ongoing character story rather than watching its beginning.

The side-content list is unusually prominent
PlayStation’s feature list includes karaoke, darts, golf, batting-cage baseball, Mahjong, Dondoko Island, and Crazy Delivery. These are not minor menu options: they help define Infinite Wealth’s rhythm between story chapters and battles.
- Karaoke, darts, golf, and batting-cage baseball: familiar activities that provide breaks from the main plot and let you spend time in the world without fighting.
- Mahjong: a traditional minigame for players who want a more rules-driven diversion.
- Dondoko Island: a larger island-focused activity that gives the game a distinct management-and-development flavor.
- Crazy Delivery: an activity built around fast, exaggerated delivery action and the series’ comic tone.
If this variety is your priority, Infinite Wealth offers the stronger immediate proposition. The first game remains the better narrative entry point, while the sequel is the better choice for someone who wants a large travel setting and many optional diversions right away.
Which protagonist matters more to you?
Choose Yakuza: Like a Dragon for Ichiban’s complete introduction
Start with the first game if you want one central viewpoint and a clear beginning. Ichiban is the sole lead, so the story can devote its attention to his personality, friendships, setbacks, and idea of what a hero should be. This makes the game easier to use as a gateway into the series’ new RPG direction.
Choose Infinite Wealth first if Kiryu’s return is your priority
Infinite Wealth is built around a dual-protagonist premise. Ichiban continues forward while Kiryu confronts the later stage of his life and what SEGA calls “one final battle.” If Kiryu is the reason you are interested, Infinite Wealth gives you his return immediately.
That choice comes with a trade-off. Kiryu’s role is part of a long-running continuity, and Ichiban’s role is a continuation rather than an introduction. You can follow the plot, but you will be choosing a later chapter because one character is already familiar to you.

Platforms, editions, and access
Where Infinite Wealth is listed
SEGA lists Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, and Steam. The exact edition and storefront presentation can differ by territory, so check the store attached to your platform before purchasing.
| Platform family | Infinite Wealth availability stated by SEGA | What to verify locally |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | PS4 and PS5 | Whether you are buying the PS4 or PS5 edition, and whether your preferred format is physical or digital. |
| Xbox | Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S | Console generation, edition, and the subscription terms shown for your region. |
| PC | Windows and Steam | Storefront version, system requirements, and edition contents. |
SEGA’s official Asia page notes that the physical edition is for PS4. That is a regional format note, not a universal statement about every territory’s retail release. If you want a disc, confirm the edition and region with the store where you plan to buy it.
Subscription access is region- and plan-specific
The current Xbox US listing says cloud play is included with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate. It also says that streaming with Essential requires a game purchase. Those terms apply to that US listing and may change, so treat the subscription page shown on your account as the final authority. Do not assume that a plan, cloud entitlement, or catalog listing is identical in another country.

Recommended play paths
The continuity-first path
- Play Yakuza: Like a Dragon and follow Ichiban’s full introduction.
- Keep your expectations centered on a character-driven RPG rather than a traditional action brawler.
- Move to Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth after finishing the first game so the dual-lead setup has context.
- Use Infinite Wealth’s Hawaii sections and optional activities as the larger second chapter they are intended to be.
The Hawaii-first path
- Choose Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth if the setting and Kiryu’s return are the deciding factors.
- Expect Ichiban and Kiryu to arrive with established histories.
- Play the first game later if you want to understand how Ichiban reached the point shown in Infinite Wealth.
The practical platform path
- Check whether your console or PC store lists the edition you want.
- If buying physical, verify the territory and generation; the official Asia listing specifically identifies a PS4 physical edition.
- If using Xbox cloud play, read the current US or local subscription page and confirm whether your plan includes streaming or requires a purchase.
Release timing and downloadable content
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth released on January 26, 2024, according to SEGA Corporation. SEGA’s release statement promoted its story, characters, minigames, and strategic battles; that wording is publisher marketing rather than an independent evaluation.
The release materials also describe downloadable content, including the Master Vacation Bundle and New Game+. These are secondary considerations when deciding order. They do not change the central recommendation: play the Ichiban introduction first unless Infinite Wealth’s setting or dual-protagonist premise is your overriding priority.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

Common mistakes when deciding
Mistake: treating Infinite Wealth as a completely unrelated RPG
Its Hawaii setting and expanded activities can make it look like a fresh start, but Ichiban’s story continues directly from the earlier game. Expecting a disconnected anthology can make returning characters feel underexplained.
Mistake: assuming the combat difference makes the first game obsolete
Infinite Wealth adds freedom of movement and environmental tactics, yet the first game remains the lesson that teaches the underlying turn-based approach. A more advanced sequel does not remove the value of the original introduction.
Mistake: assuming platform listings guarantee the same format everywhere
Platform support, physical availability, edition names, and subscription rights vary by territory. Verify the local store listing instead of relying on a listing from another region.

For the best overall order, play Yakuza: Like a Dragon first and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth second. That sequence introduces Ichiban properly, lets you learn the series’ RPG combat before its sequel adds more tactical freedom, and gives the Hawaii adventure and Kiryu’s return their intended context.
Start with Infinite Wealth only when your priorities point elsewhere: you want Hawaii immediately, you are specifically drawn to the two-lead Ichiban-and-Kiryu premise, or the game is the practical option on your platform or subscription. It is a valid entry point, but it is the less complete way to experience Ichiban’s story.
