Denise Gough voiced Yennefer of Vengerberg in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but according to a 2025 interview anecdote, she did not know who the character was when she recorded her lines. Later, people asked her whether she was Yennefer, and her reply was to ask who Yennefer was.
Who voiced Yennefer in The Witcher 3
Yennefer of Vengerberg, one of the central figures of the series, was voiced by Denise Gough in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Gough is an established stage and screen actor, and her work on the game is the only voice credit for the character discussed in the reporting covered here.
What Gough reportedly said
The anecdote comes from an interview with Gough that was reported in May 2025 and attributed to Eurogamer. Secondary reports, including a piece published on May 2, 2025, quote her describing her experience on the project. The core account is consistent across those reports: she was working on the game without knowing it was a video game she was contributing to, and when people on film sets later asked whether she was Yennefer, she had no idea who the character was.

“I didn’t know what I was doing. I’d never made a video game before. And then lots of, usually men, would come up to me in sound departments on film sets, would come up and go [whispers] ‘are you Yennefer?’ And I was like ‘who’s Yennefer?’”
Another version of the opening line reads, “I didn’t know what I was doing. I had never worked on a video game before,” and carries the same question-and-answer exchange. Treat either version as a paraphrase of the interview unless you have checked it against the original Eurogamer article or a full transcript.

Why the story is plausible, and what it does not prove
Game voice work is often recorded in a different way from a linear film or stage production. A PC Gamer feature from May 19, 2020 describes how the game’s English dialogue was produced. Ben Ryalls of Side, who produced, cast, directed and recorded the English dialogue, is quoted with these figures:
- About 50 hours of dialogue in the main storyline
- A script of 450,000 words
- 950 characters
- More than two and a half years to finish the whole game
Those are production-wide numbers from Ryalls, not figures about Gough’s individual sessions. The same feature describes secrecy around the project and dialogue being delivered to actor James Clyde, who played the Bloody Baron, in batches. That shows how the production handled material, but Clyde’s experience is not evidence about what Gough was told or shown when she recorded.

What is and is not established
- Established by the reporting: Gough voiced Yennefer, and she has described not knowing who the character was during the recording work.
- Not established: the exact wording of her remarks, because published transcripts differ and the original interview transcript was not checked here.
- Not established: how many sessions Gough recorded, how much script or context she received, or what she knew at each point. No individual recording figures have been published in the reporting.
- Not established: whether Gough will return to the role in a future Witcher game. The reporting does not confirm a reprise, and any suggestion of one is speculation.
The bottom line on the story
The anecdote is credible as a story about a performer working on a large, secretive game project without the full picture, and the production scale reported by Ryalls makes that kind of compartmentalisation easy to believe. It is still a reported recollection from one interview, and the exact words vary between published versions. Quote it with its attribution, and check the original interview before presenting any single wording as definitive.
