Messenger component, not a Windows system file. On Windows 10 or 11, the safest fix is usually to remove Yahoo Messenger and its leftover startup entry, unless you deliberately need to preserve an old installation.
What this file actually does
ymdm_video.dll belongs to Yahoo. Messenger and was normally installed beside other Messenger modules, including core_video.dll and ymdm_audio.dll. Its video or media role is inferred from its filename and companion files; Yahoo’s current public documentation does not describe the DLL’s internal functions.

Public inventories identify the file as a Win32, or 32-bit, Yahoo. Inc. component. It commonly appeared in a Yahoo Messenger directory such as:
C:Program FilesYahoo.Messenger
C:Program Files (x86)Yahoo.Messenger
It is not part of Windows, DirectX, the .NET Framework, a graphics driver, or the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Yahoo Messenger was discontinued on July 17, 2018. There is no current Yahoo-supported installer or redistributable that can reliably restore this file. Historical version and size records can help identify an old copy, but they are not a reason to download a standalone DLL.
Causes of the error by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| The message appears immediately after signing in | A Startup shortcut, scheduled task, or old Messenger entry still launches | Disable the launcher, then remove Yahoo Messenger |
| The error began after uninstalling Messenger | The uninstall left a shortcut or task behind | Remove the orphaned startup item |
| The file disappeared after antivirus activity | Windows Security quarantined it | Check Protection history and verify the file before restoring anything |
| Messenger was copied from an old disk | The DLL is missing, corrupt, or mismatched with other files | Restore the complete trusted application, not one DLL |
| “The specified module could not be found” appears although the file exists | A dependency of ymdm_video.dll or the Messenger executable is missing |
Replace or remove the complete obsolete installation |
| The message appears after a Windows problem | Protected Windows components may be damaged, although SFC and DISM do not restore Yahoo files | Repair Windows only if other system symptoms are present |
| A video call or camera feature fails after Messenger opens | A hardware or application compatibility problem may be involved | Check the application and device, not just the missing DLL |
Fix 1: Decide whether Yahoo Messenger should remain
For most systems, removing the obsolete application is the cleanest repair. Restoring ymdm_video.dll only keeps an unsupported program active and may cause the same error again when another Messenger component is missing.
Uninstall from Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Find Yahoo. Messenger.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
Uninstall from older Windows layouts
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Yahoo. Messenger.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
If Yahoo Messenger is not listed, continue with the startup checks below. Do not reinstall the DLL merely because an old launcher still refers to it.
Fix 2: Remove a leftover startup launcher
A missing-file message after Yahoo Messenger has been removed usually comes from something still trying to start it.
Check Startup Apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps. On older Windows versions, select the Startup tab.
- Look for Yahoo, Messenger, or an entry whose command points to a Yahoo Messenger folder.
- Select the entry.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the error disappears, the startup entry was the cause. After confirming that Yahoo Messenger is no longer needed, remove the obsolete shortcut or uninstall entry rather than restoring the DLL.
Check the Startup folders
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
shell:startup
- Press Enter.
- Remove only a shortcut clearly belonging to Yahoo Messenger.
Repeat with:
shell:common startup
You may need administrator permission for the common Startup folder. Do not delete unrelated shortcuts.
Check Task Scheduler
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names or actions mention Yahoo Messenger.
- Select a clearly obsolete Yahoo Messenger task.
- Choose Disable first.
- Restart Windows.
- If the error is gone, return to Task Scheduler and choose Delete for that task.
If you cannot identify a task confidently, leave it disabled and check its Actions tab before deleting it.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Antivirus software may remove a damaged or suspicious copy of an old DLL. A Yahoo label alone does not prove that a file is genuine.

- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
ymdm_video.dll. - Review the detected path, publisher, detection details, and available file information.
- Run a full Windows Security scan before deciding what to do.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- Yahoo Messenger is genuinely required on this particular computer.
- The file came from a trusted original installation or backup.
- Its location is inside the Yahoo Messenger application directory.
- The file is not a replacement downloaded from a DLL website.
- The scan and file details do not indicate tampering.
Microsoft notes that Defender can detect a restored quarantined file again unless it is explicitly allowed. For an obsolete Messenger installation, leaving the file quarantined and removing the application is normally safer.
Fix 4: Restore the complete old application only when necessary
If an old computer or preserved installation must continue running Yahoo Messenger, use the original trusted installer or a backup made from that installation. Do not search for ymdm_video.dll separately.
A complete reinstall is important because the error may involve:
Recommended Free Tools
- A missing companion DLL
- A mismatched Messenger version
- A damaged executable
- A missing dependency
- An incorrect application path
- A 32-bit application being paired with an incompatible file
A 32-bit DLL must remain with the 32-bit Yahoo Messenger application. If you have a verified copy, place it only in the application’s own directory, such as the original Yahoo Messenger folder. Never use System32 or SysWOW64 as a general-purpose DLL storage location.
After restoring the complete application:
- Start Yahoo Messenger from its application shortcut.
- Confirm that the error no longer appears.
- Test the feature that previously failed.
- Check Windows Security again.
- If another DLL error appears, stop copying individual files and restore a complete matching installation instead.
Because Yahoo Messenger is discontinued, an old installer from an unverified mirror is not a current official source and may include unwanted software. If no trusted original installer or backup exists, remove the orphaned application and startup entry instead.
Fix 5: Repair Windows only if Windows itself is damaged
ymdm_video.dll is a third-party Yahoo file, so Windows Update, SFC, and DISM will not normally restore it. Use these tools when you also have symptoms such as damaged Windows features, repeated system errors, or other protected Windows files failing.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if requested.
Then open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Search for Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM should run before SFC. If both commands complete successfully but the Yahoo error remains, return to the startup and application checks. These commands are not a substitute for reinstalling or removing Yahoo Messenger.

Repeating SFC and DISM while guessing at the damaged component can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair features are handled by the full version; reinstalling or removing Yahoo Messenger remains the definitive fix when that application owns the DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Do not reinstall unrelated runtimes or drivers
Installing Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a webcam driver is generally not the correct response to a missing ymdm_video.dll message. Those components do not turn this Yahoo Messenger DLL into a Windows file.
Device Manager is relevant only when Yahoo Messenger already opens and the camera or video hardware itself fails:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If the device is missing, disabled, or marked with a warning icon, obtain the driver from the computer or camera manufacturer. Driver work will not normally repair a missing Yahoo Messenger module.
When several devices need checking, manually hunting through hardware pages and guessing which driver is stale takes time. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing identified driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is not a replacement for restoring the original Yahoo Messenger application.
Should you use regsvr32?
No, not as a routine fix.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that ymdm_video.dll is a COM or ActiveX server. Running:
regsvr32 ymdm_video.dll
may produce a message that DllRegisterServer was not found, and it cannot repair a missing dependency, mismatched application, or orphaned startup entry.

- The DLL belongs to a different 32-bit Messenger build.
- A companion module or dependency is missing.
- The Yahoo Messenger executable is damaged.
- Windows Security has blocked or quarantined another component.
- The file has been modified or replaced.
Do not whitelist the file simply because the error disappears after doing so. Run a full scan, inspect its provenance, and remove the obsolete application if you cannot verify the installation.
System Restore may help if the problem began immediately after a recent software change and a suitable restore point exists, but it is not a targeted Yahoo DLL repair. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the change.
FAQ
Is ymdm_video.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Yahoo. Messenger and normally belongs in that application’s installation directory.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public records identify copies as Win32, or 32-bit. No verified 64-bit build was established. It should match the 32-bit Yahoo Messenger application rather than being placed in a Windows system directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill Visual C++ fix the error?
Generally no. ymdm_video.dll is a Yahoo Messenger module, not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. A missing dependency is better addressed by restoring the complete matching application or removing it.
What if Yahoo Messenger was already uninstalled?
Check Task Manager’s Startup apps, both Startup folders, and Task Scheduler. Remove the obsolete launcher. Restoring the DLL is not necessary when the application is no longer wanted.
Can I download the DLL by itself?
Do not use random DLL download sites. A standalone file may contain malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and it may not include the dependencies the application needs. Use a verified original installer or backup, or remove Yahoo Messenger.
Should I install a webcam or graphics driver?
Only if the application opens and the hardware itself fails. Drivers are not the normal fix for a missing ymdm_video.dll.
What is the safest final decision?
If you no longer need Yahoo Messenger, uninstall it and remove its leftover startup entry. If you must preserve it, restore the complete application from a trusted original source and keep every component together.
