“cnbp_318.dll” error messages on Windows

The 60-second answer
cnbp_318.dll is a Canon printer-driver component, not a normal Windows system file. It is associated with the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver and is normally installed as part of a printer package rather than copied into Windows manually.
The safest fix is to remove the affected Canon printer, restart Windows, and install the driver package for the exact Canon printer model from Canon’s official support site. Do not download cnbp_318.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into System32.
If the printer is no longer used, removing the obsolete printer and its Canon software may resolve the error without reinstalling anything.

What causes cnbp_318.dll to fail
The most common causes are:
- A Canon driver installation was damaged or incompletely removed.
- Windows Update left an old and new printer-driver package in conflict.
- Antivirus software quarantined a driver file.
- The installed package does not match the printer, Windows architecture, or device type.
- A dependent DLL is missing even though the error names
cnbp_318.dll. - Windows servicing or system components are damaged.
- A recent driver or system change created the failure.
Note when the error appears. An error during printing or printer setup strongly points to the Canon driver. An error during Print Spooler startup may indicate a broken printer package. If it appears when one application opens its print dialog, that application may simply be the first component to call the damaged driver.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the primary repair for cnbp_318.dll.
1. Identify the printer model
Check the label on the printer, or open:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Note the exact printer name and model.
Do not choose a driver merely because it says “Canon Inkjet.” Canon packages are model-dependent, and there is no confirmed universal cnbp_318.dll installer.
2. Remove the printer
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
If several old Canon printers are listed, remove unused duplicates as well. A stale printer instance can continue calling an incomplete driver package.
3. Install the correct Canon package
Use Canon’s official regional support site. Search by the exact printer model, then select the driver for your edition and architecture of Windows.
During installation:
- Run the downloaded Canon installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Print test page.
A successful repair normally means the printer installs without a DLL message, the Print Spooler remains running, and a test page prints.
If the installer still fails, disconnect the printer, remove the printer again, restart, and repeat the installation. Also check whether Windows Security or another antivirus product is blocking the package.

Windows may have a compatible built-in driver, especially for a basic print function.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
- Select the printer and complete setup.
If it is not detected:
- Select Add device.
- Wait briefly, then select Add manually.
- Choose the appropriate connection method.
- Use Windows Update to refresh the available printer list, or select Have Disk if you already have the correct Canon driver files.
- Complete the wizard and print a test page.
The built-in driver may restore printing temporarily but may not provide every Canon feature, such as scanning utilities, special media settings, or maintenance controls. Use the exact Canon package when the built-in driver does not resolve the error or lacks required features.
Microsoft recommends keeping Windows updated and using Windows Update before installing a manufacturer driver manually. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install pending updates, restart, and then retry the printer installation.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the error began after an antivirus scan, the file may have been quarantined.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry associated with the Canon printer driver.
- Confirm that the detected file came from the Canon installation before taking action.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is cnbp_318.dll. Only restore it when its origin and signature are trusted. Reinstalling the official Canon driver is generally safer than manually allowing one isolated DLL.

If the Canon package is repeatedly quarantined, update Windows Security, download the driver again from Canon, and check the detection details. Contact the antivirus vendor if it continues to block a verified installer.
Fix 4: Check the Windows and driver architecture
Public file metadata reports a 32-bit build of cnbp_318.dll, but Canon has not publicly documented one universal architecture or supported-model list for this filename. A 32-bit printer component can operate on 64-bit Windows through the appropriate printer subsystem, so the file being 32-bit does not automatically mean it is wrong.
Check your computer:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Use the driver offered for that Windows architecture and device. Pay particular attention on ARM-based PCs, where older printer installers may not work correctly. If Canon provides no compatible package, try Windows’ built-in printer driver or Windows Update.

Do not replace a 32-bit file with a 64-bit copy, or vice versa. A mismatched package can produce “not designed to run on Windows,” entry-point, or module-load errors.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
cnbp_318.dll is not established as a protected Windows core file, so DISM and SFC are follow-up repairs rather than the first solution. Use them when several Windows functions are failing, the driver installation is damaged, or Windows reports broader component corruption.
First run DISM:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
Then run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
Restart again when it finishes. Reinstall the Canon printer driver after these repairs.
If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run Windows Update, restart, and repeat the commands. If the commands complete successfully but the Canon error remains, return to the printer removal and exact-model driver installation. That result indicates the printer package, not a protected Windows file, is still the likely fault.
Repeating repair commands without knowing whether Windows or the printer package changed can be time-consuming. Fix 6: Remove obsolete Canon driver packages
Removing the printer entry does not always remove every old driver package.
Try the printer server properties interface:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
printui.exe /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Highlight an obsolete Canon driver that belongs to the removed printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver for the exact model.
Do not remove a driver still used by another working Canon printer. If you are unsure, remove only the duplicate or obsolete package associated with the failed printer.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
If cnbp_318.dll worked until a Canon driver update, Windows update, or printer installation, System Restore may reverse the change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally keeps personal files but rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs. Afterward, avoid reinstalling the same problematic driver package. Install the correct current Canon package instead.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that support self-registration through a DllRegisterServer entry point. Printer-driver components are normally installed and referenced through the printer driver package and Windows Driver Store.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 cnbp_318.dll
If the DLL is not self-registering, Windows may report that the entry point is missing. If the error says “module not found,” Microsoft notes that a dependency may be missing rather than the named DLL itself. Registering the file does not repair that dependency or rebuild the Canon driver installation.
Do not download or copy cnbp_318.dll
Avoid DLL download sites, modified installers, and files copied from another computer. The file may contain malware, belong to a different Canon driver build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing.
Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32 is not a reliable repair. Printer-driver files belong to their installed package and may be stored in a version-specific Driver Store repository. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows’ printer installation tools, and Canon’s official support site.

Installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal fix for this Canon printer-driver component unless a separate application explicitly identifies one of those runtimes as missing.

Does reinstalling the printer restore the file?
