Yes: you can play many classic games on an iPhone without jailbreaking it. But installing an emulator does not give you a library of games. You need compatible game files, and what you can play—and whether you can obtain those files lawfully—depends on the game, your location and the emulator.
What changed: Apple allows emulator apps, not free access to games
Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines now permit apps that emulate retro game consoles and PCs. Guideline 4.7 says these apps may offer game downloads, subject to Apple’s rules and applicable law. That changes how emulator software can reach iPhone users; it does not make copyrighted games free to download or automatically authorize any particular ROM source. Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines set the software-distribution rules, while game files remain subject to copyright and licensing.
Before this change, iPhone emulation commonly meant jailbreaking, sideloading or relying on unofficial signing routes. Now, supported emulator apps can be installed through approved distribution channels. Apple does not endorse every emulator, guarantee that one is available in every country, or supply its games.
Which iPhone emulator should you choose?
Delta: the straightforward Nintendo-focused option
Delta is a practical starting point if you mainly want Nintendo-era systems. Its developer lists support for NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. Delta is the emulator—the software that imitates a console—not a game store. You import compatible files yourself. Delta’s system and feature overview describes the supported platforms and features.

Delta also offers features that can make older games more convenient on a phone, including save states, fast-forwarding, controller skins, physical-controller support and synchronization options. Features and behavior can change between releases; the Delta release notes track updates.
Provenance: a wider range of systems
If you want one library for more than Nintendo consoles, Provenance advertises a broader range, including Atari platforms, Sega systems, PlayStation, PSP, Dreamcast, Saturn, GameCube, Wii, 3DS, Neo Geo, TurboGrafx/PC Engine and others. Its current App Store listing is the place to check the latest advertised systems and features. Support for a console does not guarantee that every game works perfectly, and performance depends on the game, emulator core and iPhone.
Provenance also describes features such as controller mapping, shaders, save states and iCloud-related options; some features require Provenance Plus. See the Provenance documentation and FAQ for current details.
Other options
RetroArch and specialist emulators such as PPSSPP may suit people with specific systems or a taste for configuration. They are not necessarily as simple to set up as Delta. Choose based on the console you want to emulate and how much setup you are willing to do, rather than assuming that one app is best for everyone.

How to install Delta and import a game
Delta’s official guide gives different installation routes by region: it directs users outside the European Union to the App Store and users in EU countries to AltStore PAL. Availability can change, so follow Delta’s current installation guide and check your local storefront rather than relying on a U.S. App Store link. The Delta guide is the starting point for its documentation.
- Install Delta using the distribution route specified for your region.
- Get a compatible game file lawfully. Delta does not include commercial games. Make the file available on your iPhone through Files, AirDrop, cloud storage or another transfer method.
- Open Delta and tap the “+” button in the top-right corner.
- Select the game file and wait for it to appear in your library.
- Tap the game’s cover art to launch it.
A ROM is a file containing a game’s data. The emulator provides a software version of the console; the ROM provides the game. Delta’s import guide lists these example formats:
| System | Formats listed by Delta |
|---|---|
| NES | .nes |
| SNES | .smc, .sfc, .fig |
| Game Boy | .gb |
| Game Boy Color | .gbc |
| Game Boy Advance | .gba |
| Nintendo DS | .ds, .nds |
| Nintendo 64 | .n64, .z64 |
| Sega Genesis | .gen, .bin, .md, .smd |
That list reflects the formats documented in Delta’s guide; support can change with updates. Installing the app will not populate it with Mario, Pokémon, Sonic or other commercial games.
Where can you get game files legally?
The clearest low-risk options are officially licensed rereleases or collections, legally distributed homebrew and public-domain games, and personal backups obtained in a way permitted where you live. Delta’s documentation points Game Boy-family cartridge owners toward tools such as GB Operator for obtaining game files; Delta itself does not distribute games. A tool for making a backup does not settle the legal question of how a particular copy may be made or used.

Owning a cartridge does not automatically give you a universal right to download a ROM from the internet, nor does it authorize redistributing one. Copyright and anti-circumvention rules vary by jurisdiction, platform, method and use. The U.S. Copyright Office’s discussions of software and circumvention do not amount to blanket permission to download commercial ROMs: see its 2012 recommendation and 2010 recommendation. This is general information, not legal advice. Avoid websites offering commercial game files without clear authorization.
Are touch controls comfortable enough?
They can be fine for turn-based role-playing games, puzzles, menu-heavy titles and short sessions. They are less comfortable for precision platforming, fighting games, racing, fast action or games that require several buttons at once. A game can run successfully and still feel awkward to play: virtual buttons take up screen space and do not provide the physical feedback of a controller.
Nintendo DS is a particular compromise. Its two screens, stylus-focused input and touch-dependent games do not always translate neatly to one iPhone display. Landscape orientation and alternate screen layouts may help, but a physical controller cannot replace the DS touchscreen in every game. Delta’s release notes document changes to DS layouts and related features.
How to connect a controller
Delta supports controllers that iOS supports, including Xbox Wireless controllers, PlayStation DualShock 4 and DualSense, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Joy-Cons, MFi controllers, and Bluetooth or wired keyboards. Compatibility and available features can vary by controller and app. Delta’s controller guide explains its setup and mapping options.

Apple also documents controller pairing and customization through its controller support guide; some supported controllers can be customized under Settings → General → Game Controller. If a controller pairs with the iPhone but does not work in Delta, quit or background the app, confirm the controller is selected for Player 1, then reopen the game. If needed, forget the controller in Bluetooth settings and pair it again.

Conveniences beyond original hardware
- Save states: Save and resume from points outside a game’s built-in save system.
- Fast-forward: Move through slow animations, dialogue or repetitive sections more quickly.
- Custom controls: Remap buttons or use a different on-screen layout.
- Display and sharing options: Delta documents AirPlay and local multiplayer for NES, SNES and N64, with up to four players. Its feature overview and release notes describe supported features.
These options are useful, but they do not make emulation an exact reproduction of an original console. Layout, input, performance and compatibility can differ from game to game.
If the game is missing or will not import
If the library is empty, the emulator probably has no game files to display. Delta explicitly says it does not distribute games; import a compatible file with the “+” button. If a file will not import, check that it has a supported extension and is intended for the right system. An archive, corrupted copy, altered ROM or multi-file game may need different handling. Delta’s troubleshooting guide notes that corrupted or altered files can fail or cause freezes.
If a game freezes or has graphics problems
A corrupted file, ROM hack, game-specific compatibility issue or demanding system may be responsible. Try a clean copy obtained through a lawful method and check the emulator’s troubleshooting information. A console appearing in an emulator’s supported-systems list is not a promise that every title will run flawlessly.

If the emulator is unavailable in your region
Check the emulator’s official distribution instructions and your Apple account’s storefront. Regional availability, distribution routes and device requirements can differ; avoid unofficial download sites when looking for an app that is not appearing in search.
Which route fits your priorities?
| Your priority | Consider | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Simpler setup | Delta | Its listed systems are a narrower range than Provenance’s. |
| Nintendo handhelds and consoles | Delta | It does not cover every classic platform. |
| More systems in one library | Provenance | Broader coverage can mean more setup; some features require Provenance Plus. |
| More configuration options | A RetroArch-style frontend | A steeper learning curve. |
| PSP games specifically | PPSSPP | A specialist option rather than an all-in-one library. |
| Better control for action games | A controller you already own | It is less portable than touch controls alone. |
| Legal simplicity | Licensed rereleases or legally distributed games | Not every classic title is available this way. |
| Playing on a larger screen | A controller and AirPlay-compatible setup | Display behavior and latency can vary. |
Will it work well on your iPhone?
Do not assume that every iPhone will run every game equally well. Delta’s App Store release notes say version 1.5 raised its deployment target to iOS 14.0, but that historical detail is not a guarantee of the current minimum requirement; check the live listing before installing. More demanding systems such as N64 and DS can be more sensitive to the iPhone model, game and emulator version. Performance features may also depend on hardware: Delta’s release notes, for example, describe a DS fast-forward improvement on A15-or-later devices.
Long sessions can use more battery and generate heat. A physical controller can make play more comfortable, while a small screen may remain a limitation regardless of performance. Compatibility is specific to the game and emulator, not just the console name on an app listing.
