Yes: the original 1996 Diablo is playable in a modern web browser through DiabloWeb, a community WebAssembly port based on the DevilutionX codebase. The free browser option is the shareware version, not the complete retail game. To play the full game, you must provide the legally obtained DIABDAT.MPQ data file.
What DiabloWeb actually is
DiabloWeb is not an official Blizzard browser release and it is not Blizzard streaming the original executable. It is a browser build of a community-reconstructed Diablo engine. The engine is compiled to WebAssembly, allowing it to run inside a compatible browser; the original artwork, music, maps, quests, and other retail assets come from the game’s data files.

The project is related to DevilutionX, the broader open-source port of Diablo and Hellfire. DiabloWeb is the specific browser version, so features such as multiplayer, save behavior, and platform support should not automatically be assumed to be identical to the desktop port.
How to play the free shareware version
- Open the DiabloWeb page in a modern desktop browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
- Select Play Shareware.
- Wait for the roughly 50 MB browser build to load.
- Start the game.
This route does not require the full retail MPQ. However, it contains only the limited shareware/demo content, so it is best for a quick sample or a nostalgic short session rather than the complete campaign.

How to play the complete game
For the full retail version, obtain Diablo from a legitimate source, such as an original CD or an authorized digital release. Blizzard announced an authorized DRM-free release through GOG in 2019; its current price should be checked on the live store page rather than assumed from the historical $9.99 launch price.
- Install or otherwise access your authorized copy.
- Find the extracted file named
DIABDAT.MPQ. - Open DiabloWeb.
- Use the MPQ file-selection control or drag
DIABDAT.MPQonto the page. - Allow the browser build to process the file, then launch the game.
The browser page does not give you a free copy of the retail data. Do not download unauthorized MPQ uploads. For the official file requirements and extraction guidance, see DevilutionX’s MPQ documentation.
What you get
| Version | What is required | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Shareware | No retail MPQ | Limited demo/shareware content |
| Full Diablo | DIABDAT.MPQ |
The original retail game |
| Hellfire | hellfire.mpq, hfmonk.mpq, hfmusic.mpq, and hfvoice.mpq |
Expansion content, if supported by the particular browser build |
Hellfire should be treated as a separate setup rather than an automatic part of the browser demo. Blizzard has historically described Hellfire as not being an official Blizzard product, even though it is commonly regarded as the game’s expansion.

Browser, DevilutionX, or the official release?
| Option | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| DiabloWeb | Immediate access, short sessions, and avoiding desktop installation | Requires the MPQ for the full game; browser storage and input behavior vary; it may expose fewer features than the desktop port |
| DevilutionX desktop | Regular play, controllers, widescreen displays, higher resolutions, bug fixes, and quality-of-life options | You must locate and import the original game data, and the experience can differ from the original executable |
| GOG release | An authorized purchase, the original executable, and a conventional desktop installation | It is not a browser session and requires buying the game |
DevilutionX is the stronger choice for repeated play. Its project supports modern platform features, including controller support, widescreen/high-resolution options, bug fixes, and ports for multiple operating systems. The GOG release announced by Blizzard is the simplest conservative purchase path if you want an authorized copy without managing a community port.
Phones, tablets, saves, and multiplayer
Mobile devices
DiabloWeb may run in mobile browsers, but that does not guarantee a comfortable experience. Combat, inventory management, and precise clicking are generally easier with a physical keyboard and mouse, or a compatible controller. Desktop Chrome, Firefox, or Edge is the safest recommendation. DevilutionX also has dedicated mobile ports, but those are separate from the browser build; its Android listing still requires the original game data for the complete game.
Save persistence
Browser saves and settings depend on local browser storage. Clearing site data, using private browsing, switching profiles, changing browsers, or moving to another device can affect persistence. The DevilutionX web interface says uploaded data can persist between sessions and includes a settings-reset option, but that behavior should not be treated as a guarantee for every DiabloWeb deployment. Keep a desktop installation if reliable long-term save management is important.

- For PlayStation owners, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition offers 'The Last of Us' Nephalem Rift, a randomized dungeon swarming with Stalkers, Clickers and Bloaters in hand-picked environments with a unique 'The Last of Us' yellow spore effect. Also included is the 'Guise of the Colossi' Unique Armor; a unique transmogrification plan that unlocks six armors that are inspired by 'Shadow of the Colossus' and work for all classes.
- This Ultimate Evil Edition contains both Diablo III and the Reaper of Souls expansion set, together in one definitive volume.
- Play solo or form a party of up to four other heroes.
Multiplayer
The underlying DevilutionX project supports multiplayer, but that does not mean the linked browser build automatically offers the same server list or multiplayer features. Treat browser multiplayer as something to verify in the exact build rather than an assumed feature. For a dependable multiplayer setup, the desktop port is the safer choice.

Troubleshooting
The page only launches the demo
That normally means no retail MPQ has been supplied. Launching the shareware option is separate from loading the full game. Add the correct DIABDAT.MPQ from an authorized installation.
The MPQ is rejected
- Make sure you selected the extracted MPQ, not an installer, archive, or incomplete download.
- Confirm that the file is named
DIABDAT.MPQand is the Diablo data file, not a Hellfire file. - Use the original, unmodified file from your legitimate installation.
- Try a current desktop browser if the upload control or drag-and-drop interface fails.
Installation folders differ by store, operating system, and the location chosen during setup, so search the installed game directory if the file is not immediately visible.

A save disappeared
Check whether browser cookies or site data were cleared, whether you used private browsing, and whether you opened the page in a different profile or browser. Local browser storage is not as portable or durable as a conventional desktop save directory.
Hellfire will not load
Check that the browser build supports Hellfire and that all required files are present: hellfire.mpq, hfmonk.mpq, hfmusic.mpq, and hfvoice.mpq. Supplying only DIABDAT.MPQ provides the original game, not the expansion.

DiabloWeb is a convenient way to revisit the 1996 Diablo without installing a Windows-era executable. Use Play Shareware for the free demo immediately; use an authorized copy of the game and its DIABDAT.MPQ file for the complete retail experience. Choose desktop DevilutionX for regular modern play, or the authorized GOG release if you prefer a conventional official purchase and installation.
