If you’re considering Helldivers 2 on PC, waiting is sensible unless Steam’s current Recent reviews and the latest patch notes show that the game’s performance problems have improved. PC complaints recurred across several updates from 2025 through August 2026, but the live October 2026 review score and the status of a promised optimization update are not established here. Check both before buying.
Why PC buyers may want to wait
The concern is a pattern of reported instability and performance trouble, not proof that every PC is affected or that the game is still broken today. Reports surfaced after the September 2025 “Into the Unjust” update, persisted after a September 16 patch, and were followed by Arrowhead acknowledging that recent patches had fallen short on crashes, freezes and glitches. In fall 2025, the studio said players were “absolutely right to expect better” and promised a mid-October patch and better communication.

Steam sentiment reflected that frustration at the time. TheGamer reported that the game had fallen to Mixed, with about 69% positive reviews over the preceding 30 days in fall 2025. Those figures are historical, not a measure of the game’s current standing.

The pattern continued in 2026. Patch 6.2.5, dated May 27, added DLSS 4.5, FSR 3.1.5/4.0.3 and XeSS 3.0 on PC, with development support from Nixxes. Coverage reported complaints about shimmering and moiré artifacts, and a 35% positive Steam-review figure over the previous 30 days. Arrowhead described the patch as an “opening salvo” and planned a second optimization update for summer 2026. Whether that update shipped, and what it changed, is not confirmed here.

After the August 12, 2026 Warhammer 40,000 Legendary Warbond release, players reported startup crashes and crashes while loading the Super Destroyer. Arrowhead confirmed a crash connected to Alt-Tab and the Democracy Terminal, recommending that players avoid Alt-Tab for the time being. Reports around the release do not establish that the Warbond itself caused all the crashes.
What to check before you buy
- Open the live Steam store page. Check the Recent reviews separately from All reviews. Recent reviews are more useful for judging the current state; a past Mixed rating or an old positive score cannot answer whether the latest build is stable.
- Read the newest PC patch notes. Look for explicit changes addressing crashes, freezes, performance or upscaling artifacts. A promised optimization update is not evidence that it shipped or fixed the reported issues.
- Compare the reports with your own setup. Check your graphics driver, available storage and whether other players with similar hardware are reporting trouble. The fall 2025 report put the install footprint above 140GB, so confirm the live requirements and leave enough free SSD space before installing.
- Decide how much uncertainty you can accept. If recent Steam reviews remain Mixed or Negative and current patch notes still list unresolved crashes, waiting is the lower-risk choice. If recent reviews have recovered and the latest notes address the problems, buying is more reasonable. No published crash-rate or share-of-PCs-affected figure is established here, so these checks cannot guarantee how the game will run on your machine.
- Check Steam’s current refund terms before purchasing. Review the official Steam Refunds page rather than relying on an unverified summary of its time and playtime limits.
If you already own the game and it is crashing
These are troubleshooting steps reported by guides, not guaranteed fixes. Try them one at a time so you can identify whether anything changes.

- Repair GameGuard, the game’s anti-cheat component, using the available game or support instructions.
- Update your graphics driver using the GPU maker’s official support channel.
- Remove old launch options, then test again.
- Temporarily disable background overlays to see whether one is contributing to the issue.
- If you encounter the reported Alt-Tab crash involving the Democracy Terminal, avoid Alt-Tab as Arrowhead recommended.
Player theories blaming GameGuard or overheating are not confirmed causes. A crash report alone does not identify the cause, and the available evidence does not establish how many PCs are affected.

Why waiting is a practical choice
Arrowhead acknowledged that some larger performance problems could not be fixed with a quick patch and said it was working on a longer-term plan. That is useful context, but a commitment to fix an issue is not the same as a delivered fix. Because the October 2026 Steam Recent-review score and the promised summer optimization update’s status are unverified, the best decision is conditional: check the live reviews and newest patch notes, then buy only if they give you enough confidence in the current PC build.
