Yes—Microsoft now lets supported Arm-based Windows 11 laptops download and play games locally through the Xbox PC app. That includes relevant PC Game Pass titles, so Snapdragon-powered laptops are substantially more useful for gaming than they were before. But the headline needs a qualification: this is not a conversion into an Xbox console, and not every Game Pass or PC game will run.
Microsoft began testing the feature with Windows Insiders on August 13, 2025, before announcing broader support on January 21, 2026. Local installation is the important change: compatible games run on the laptop rather than being streamed from Xbox Cloud Gaming.

What Microsoft actually launched
The Xbox PC app can now run on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs and offer local downloads for supported games in its catalog. Owners of compatible Snapdragon laptops can sign into the app, install an eligible title, and play it using the laptop’s own processor and graphics hardware.
That is different from simply opening Xbox Cloud Gaming in a browser or app. With cloud gaming, Microsoft runs the title on a remote server and streams video to the laptop. With local play, the game files are installed on the laptop and performance depends on its CPU, integrated GPU, memory, cooling, drivers, and the game’s compatibility with Windows on Arm.

Microsoft’s original Insider announcement used the narrower phrase “supported titles”. The later January 21, 2026 Xbox update described Arm PCs as able to download titles from the Xbox PC app catalog. In practical terms, availability remains game-specific: seeing a title in the wider Xbox ecosystem does not guarantee that it can be installed and played locally on every Arm laptop.
So “your laptop is now an Xbox” is best understood as an ecosystem description. An Arm laptop can now participate in more of the Xbox PC experience, but it has not gained Xbox-console hardware, universal compatibility, or console-like performance.
Which laptops qualify?
The basic requirements are:
- Windows 11 installed on an Arm-based processor.
- A current Windows installation and updated Xbox PC app.
- A Microsoft account with the appropriate game ownership or subscription entitlement.
- A title Microsoft has enabled or validated for local play on Windows on Arm.
Modern Qualcomm Snapdragon X-series laptops are the main consumer devices covered by this development. However, two Arm laptops can deliver very different gaming results. Processor model, integrated graphics capability, RAM, storage, cooling, display resolution, and power settings all matter.

Older Windows RT and early Windows-on-Arm products should not be assumed to offer the same experience as current Snapdragon X systems. The app’s availability is only the first checkpoint; each game still has its own requirements.
How games run on Arm Windows
There are three broad compatibility categories:
Native Arm games
A native Arm build is compiled for the laptop’s processor architecture. It avoids x86 or x64 emulation and generally offers the cleanest path to good efficiency and performance. Native support is still not universal across the PC game ecosystem.
x86 and x64 games through Prism
Many Windows games were built for Intel or AMD processors. Windows can translate those instructions for Arm systems through its Prism compatibility layer. Microsoft says Prism gained support for AVX and AVX2, instruction-set extensions used by some modern games, as part of its continuing Arm gaming work. The company’s December 9, 2025 overview also described broader progress in Windows-on-Arm gaming.

Emulation can make a game playable, but it does not guarantee the same frame rates, frame pacing, battery life, or load times as a comparable x86 gaming laptop. A title may launch successfully yet still perform poorly on integrated graphics or consume substantially more power than a native Arm game.
Games blocked by system components
Some failures have little to do with the game engine itself. Launchers, DRM, anti-cheat drivers, overlays, and other low-level components can prevent installation or startup. This is particularly important for online competitive games, where unsupported drivers may block the entire game rather than merely reducing performance.
Anti-cheat is better—but not universally solved
Anti-cheat compatibility was one of the largest historical obstacles to gaming on Windows on Arm. Microsoft says Easy Anti-Cheat added Windows-on-Arm support through work involving Epic, Qualcomm, and Microsoft. Its December 2025 update also identified BattlEye, Denuvo, and XIGNCODE3 as anti-cheat technologies with Windows-on-Arm support.
That does not mean every game using one of those technologies will work. The individual developer or publisher must configure and enable the relevant support for its game. A title can still fail because of a kernel-level driver, launcher, DRM implementation, or an outdated build.
Competitive multiplayer games therefore deserve extra caution. Check the specific game’s current support information before buying it or choosing an Arm laptop primarily for that title. A single game’s successful use of Easy Anti-Cheat is not proof that the entire anti-cheat ecosystem is compatible.

Microsoft and coverage of the rollout have described the majority of the Game Pass catalog as playable on Arm systems. One secondary report, from HotHardware, cited a claim that more than 85% of the catalog “runs well.” That figure should be treated as an attributed estimate, not an independently verified benchmark.

- Includes Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth technology for wireless gaming on supported consoles, Windows 10 PCs, Android phones, and tablets. iOS support coming in the future
- VGSION easy open shipping package, VGSION authorized only
The percentage can change with the catalog, game updates, Windows builds, graphics drivers, and the definition of “runs well.” It also does not answer the questions most players actually care about: whether a specific game launches, whether multiplayer works, and whether the laptop can deliver acceptable performance at its native resolution.
Do not assume that:
- Every Game Pass title can be downloaded locally.
- Every downloadable title reaches 60 frames per second.
- Every game has a native Arm version.
- Every anti-cheat system works on every supported title.
- Every Snapdragon laptop performs like a dedicated gaming laptop.
Game Pass plans and local access
Local PC access depends on both the game and the subscription. Microsoft’s Arm rollout specifically identifies PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate as relevant paths for PC access. The exact catalog and plan entitlements are subject to change, so check the game’s current Xbox listing before subscribing.
If you own a game, verify that you own the PC version or an entitlement that includes PC access. A game being available on Xbox console does not automatically mean the same account can install its Windows PC version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsXbox Play Anywhere is separate from ordinary PC access
Xbox Play Anywhere applies only to designated titles. Microsoft says more than 1,000 games support the program. For eligible games, a supported purchase can provide access across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, with shared saves, achievements, and add-ons. See Microsoft’s January Xbox update for the announcement.
Play Anywhere is not universal cross-buy:
- A Steam purchase generally does not become an Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement.
- A game may support cross-save without supporting cross-buy.
- Cross-play, cross-save, and cross-buy are separate features.
- You must use the correct Microsoft/Xbox account for entitlements and synchronization.
Microsoft also introduced a Game Save Sync Indicator for PC and handheld experiences. It is intended to show whether progress has synchronized before you switch devices. Even so, allow the game to finish saving and syncing before closing it or moving to another system.
Local play versus Xbox Cloud Gaming
| Feature | Local play | Cloud gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On the laptop | On Microsoft’s remote servers |
| What determines performance | CPU, GPU, RAM, cooling, drivers, and compatibility | Internet speed, latency, connection stability, image streaming, and server availability |
| Internet requirement | Often needed for installation, updates, sign-in, or license checks | Required continuously during play |
| Offline play | Sometimes possible after installation and authentication | Not possible |
| Main advantage | Lower input latency and no video-stream compression | Works on hardware that cannot run the game locally |
Cloud gaming remains a useful fallback for games that cannot be installed locally or that run badly on integrated graphics. Its drawbacks include latency, image-quality changes, data usage, regional availability, and dependence on a stable broadband connection.

Xbox Mode is a different feature
Microsoft’s April 30, 2026 Xbox Mode announcement introduced a controller-oriented Windows interface. It brings recent and installed games into a more console-like view, aggregates access to the Xbox Game Pass catalog, integrates games installed from leading PC storefronts, and provides a route back to the ordinary Windows desktop.

How to test an Arm laptop before committing to a game
- Install all available Windows updates.
- Update the Xbox PC app through the Microsoft Store.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Game Pass plan or purchase.
- Search for the game in the Xbox PC app.
- Check whether the page offers a local Download or install option rather than only cloud play.
- Confirm that your subscription includes the PC version.
- Check the publisher’s current requirements, anti-cheat notes, launcher requirements, and input support.
- Install a low-risk title before buying a subscription or laptop specifically for a large game.
- Test performance while plugged in and on battery if portable play matters.
Troubleshooting local installation
If the game will not install
Likely causes include unsupported Arm availability, an outdated app or Windows build, an entitlement problem, insufficient storage, or a required launcher or driver that is not compatible. Update Windows and the Xbox app, sign out and back in, restart the Microsoft Store and Xbox-related services, and verify your subscription tier. If another clearly supported game installs normally, the problem is probably specific to the first title.
If local installation is unavailable but the title appears in Xbox Cloud Gaming, streaming may be the intended fallback.
If the game installs but will not launch
Check anti-cheat initialization, Gaming Services, third-party launchers, VPN or firewall interference, antivirus blocking, overlays, and controller utilities. A game may also require x64 components that do not work correctly in the Arm environment. Look for a native Arm build, but remember that an emulated game can still fail because of a separate launcher or driver.

If performance is poor
- Lower resolution and graphics quality.
- Enable an in-game upscaler where available.
- Use a performance power mode while connected to power.
- Close browsers and unnecessary background applications.
- Keep air vents unobstructed and the laptop cool.
- Prefer native Arm games or titles known to work well through Prism.
- Use cloud gaming when the title is compatible in principle but too demanding for the integrated GPU.
What the experience is likely to be like
Arm laptops have genuine advantages for portable gaming: long battery life, low noise, thin designs, quick wake times, and increasingly capable integrated graphics. They can be appealing for indie games, older PC titles, strategy games, and supported Game Pass downloads.
Best Value
- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
The trade-off is breadth. Most Arm laptops do not have a dedicated AMD or Nvidia gaming GPU, and many are not upgradeable. Performance varies considerably between Snapdragon models and laptop thermal designs. Mods, niche peripherals, older DRM, unofficial launchers, and competitive multiplayer can all introduce problems that ordinary application emulation does not reveal.
An Arm laptop can be a good portable Game Pass machine without being a universal PC gaming machine.
Should you buy an Arm laptop for gaming?
It makes sense if you:
- Already own an Arm laptop and want more local Game Pass options.
- Prioritize battery life, portability, and quiet operation.
- Mainly play indie, older, strategy, or confirmed-compatible titles.
- Are willing to check individual games before installing or buying them.
- Have reliable broadband for cloud gaming when local play is unavailable.
Choose an x86 gaming laptop instead if you:
- Need broad compatibility across Steam, Epic, Battle.net, and niche launchers.
- Primarily play competitive multiplayer games with strict anti-cheat.
- Want high frame rates and modern AAA performance.
- Rely on extensive modding, specialist peripherals, or older PC software.
- Want the fewest compatibility checks and the closest thing to guaranteed PC support.
Compare the laptops using your actual game list, not the size of the Game Pass catalog. Check native Arm availability, Prism compatibility, anti-cheat requirements, integrated-GPU performance, battery priorities, cloud-gaming quality, and the price of an alternative x86 laptop with a discrete GPU.

Microsoft has removed one of the biggest barriers to gaming on Windows on Arm. The Xbox PC app now makes Snapdragon laptops far more credible as portable Game Pass machines, and local downloads are a meaningful improvement over relying exclusively on cloud streaming.
But “now an Xbox” is an ecosystem claim, not a guarantee of console-level compatibility or performance. Supported games can run locally; unsupported games may still need cloud streaming, a different device, or an x86 Windows gaming laptop. For existing Arm owners, the update is useful. For buyers, your personal game library—not the headline—is what should decide the purchase.
