YouTube allows up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key. Both limits apply at once: adding another encoder does not create another allowance, and a new stream cannot start if either limit has been reached. YouTube Help lists these limits in its live-streaming guidance.
How many active streams can you broadcast on YouTube?
The limits are based on the channel and the stream key—not on how many computers, software encoders, or hardware encoders you use:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Channel-wide: no more than 10 active streams at a time.
- Per stream key: no more than 3 active streams using the same key at a time.
These are simultaneous limits. A channel can be below its overall maximum and still be unable to start another stream if the key assigned to that stream is already being used by three active streams. Conversely, switching to a different key does not allow a channel to exceed its 10-stream cap.

What multiple encoders do—and do not—change
An encoder packages and sends a video feed to YouTube. It can be streaming software on a computer or a standalone hardware device. To connect one, set up a live event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover this connection.

- 【Hardware H.265/H.264 Encoding at 1080P60】Dedicated hardware encoder delivers broadcast-quality 1080P60 streams with H.265/H.264 compression. Reduces bandwidth usage by up to 50% compared to legacy H.264-only solutions, while maintaining crisp, crystal-clear video output.
- 【Broad Protocol Support for IP Distribution】 Supports SRT, RTMP(S), RTSP, UDP, HTTP, HLS, WebRTC, TRTC, Icecast and SHOUTcast — integrate seamlessly with CDNs, surveillance NVRs, IPTV systems and browser-based monitoring dashboards. One device replaces multiple single-purpose streaming boxes.
- 【Browser-Based Setup in Minutes】 Set up in minutes through any browser — no software, drivers or OS compatibility issues. DHCP is enabled by default to prevent IP address conflicts on your network. Note: basic networking knowledge (IP address, RTSP/RTMP configuration) is recommended for advanced streaming setups.
- 【Compact Design with Flexible Deployment】Palm-sized form factor (approx. 90×54×29mm) fits easily behind monitors, on shelves, or in equipment racks. Low power consumption ensures reliable 24/7 operation for live events, remote monitoring, and digital signage.
- 【Professional Audio & OSD Overlay + 1-Year Warranty】 Supports HDMI embedded audio plus external 3.5mm input. Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
Using separate encoders can give you separate production sources or workflows, but it does not raise either YouTube cap. If a stream will not start, count active streams on the channel and active streams using that particular key before assuming the encoder is at fault.
Plan the stream keys around the broadcasts
For multiple independent live events
Keep a count of both active events on the channel and active uses of each key. Assign keys deliberately, especially when different encoders or operators are running concurrent broadcasts. YouTube’s stream settings guidance explains how to reuse settings, create custom stream keys, and reset a key. If you reset one, update every encoder that uses it with the replacement key.

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
For horizontal and vertical delivery of one event
YouTube documents a workflow for delivering horizontal and vertical formats together from Live Control Room. For dual-format streaming with a third-party encoder, YouTube’s guidance calls for RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical stream. See YouTube’s dual-stream instructions. Do not treat this as an exemption from the channel or key limits; the guidance does not establish that dual-format output is exempt or specify how every configuration is tallied internally.
Start safely and monitor the feed
- Create or select the live event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key.
- Configure the encoder with those details. Confirm that the intended key is assigned to the intended event and encoder.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room before taking the event live.
- Check the active-stream counts at the channel and key levels if a concurrent stream cannot start.
- Monitor stream quality during the event. YouTube recommends preparing encoders in advance, checking the preview, and testing failover where applicable. Its live encoder settings guidance provides further setup advice.
Troubleshoot a stream that will not start
- YouTube will not accept another stream: count active streams across the channel, then count active streams using the selected key. Free a slot at whichever limit has been reached.
- A reset key no longer works in an encoder: replace the old key in that encoder with the new one. Update every other encoder that relied on the reset key.
- The encoder is sending, but no preview appears: verify the server URL and key against the event’s Live Control Room settings, then check that the correct event is selected.
- Dual-format output is involved: check the documented RTMP(S) setup and second-key configuration. Do not assume the second key grants additional channel capacity.
When to consider a different encoding or distribution setup
A standalone hardware encoder can suit a production that needs dedicated encoding or additional production hardware. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production events, but buying another encoder will not lift the platform limits. Choose hardware for its outputs, protocol support, production needs, and fit with your existing workflow.

If the goal is to send one production to multiple platforms, a local encoder setup and a cloud relay solve a different problem from YouTube’s concurrent-stream quota. YouTube describes cloud relay as an option for sending one high-quality feed to multiple destinations, including for users seeking a simpler setup or planning to stream to more than two channels. It does not change YouTube’s limits for streams on a channel or key. Compare approaches based on control, local computer capacity, upload bandwidth, setup complexity, and the number of destinations.

For a prerecorded video that should loop as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home. It plays uploaded video, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. It offers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is a way to keep a prerecorded stream running—not a way to bypass YouTube’s active-stream limits. Visit StreamNeo or start the free day.
