YouTube fan funding gives eligible creators paid ways to earn directly from viewers: channel memberships provide recurring monthly support in exchange for perks, while Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks are purchases tied to live chat or individual videos. These features have separate eligibility rules, content restrictions, and availability by location; meeting a YouTube Partner Program threshold alone does not guarantee access.
What counts as YouTube fan funding?
Fan funding is the group of paid YouTube features through which viewers support creators on the platform. YouTube describes it as a way to earn extra income while connecting with viewers and building a community. It is not the same as crowdfunding or charitable donations: YouTube explicitly says Supers and Super Thanks are not donation tools.
The core formats differ by payment cadence and where the viewer interacts. Memberships are recurring; the three Supers are purchase-based. YouTube lists Shopping separately as another monetization path, not as a fan-funding feature.
How memberships and each Super work
| Feature | How viewers pay and interact | Where it fits | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel memberships | Recurring monthly payment for creator-defined perks, such as badges and emoji. | Channels able to offer continuing benefits to members. | YPP membership, age, location, terms, and feature-specific eligibility apply. Check the current rules in Studio. |
| Super Chat | A viewer purchases a highlighted message in live chat. | Live streams or Premieres where live chat is enabled. | Unavailable for specified ineligible content, and when chat or comments are disabled. |
| Super Stickers | A viewer purchases an animated image shown in live chat. | Live streams or Premieres where live chat is enabled. | Has the same listed content and chat restrictions as Super Chat. |
| Super Thanks | A one-time purchase displays an animation to the purchaser and lets them post a customizable comment. | Eligible long-form videos and Shorts, including eligible archived long-form streams or Premieres. | Unavailable on live streams or Premieres while they are live; comments must be on, and content exclusions apply. |
Choose by format: use memberships for ongoing perks, Super Chat or Stickers for live interaction, and Super Thanks for eligible videos or Shorts. YouTube says Super Chat and Super Stickers connect fans and creators during live streams and Premieres.

Who can enable fan funding?
YouTube’s current monetization overview lists these YPP entry thresholds for the earlier tier that includes channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Shopping:
- 500 subscribers;
- three public uploads in the last 90 days; and
- either 3,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
The same overview lists a higher tier for Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium revenue: 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days. Paid ad campaign views and watch time do not count toward these thresholds, except for qualifying follow-on views as described by YouTube.

Thresholds are only the first gate. YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies set baseline requirements for fan funding: the channel must be in YPP, the creator must be at least 18, and the creator must live in a location where the specific feature is available. Creators must also agree to and comply with the relevant Commerce Product Module or, for those who signed the earlier agreement, the Commerce Product Addendum. Each feature has additional rules. Turn eligible features on individually in YouTube Studio or the Studio mobile app, and confirm your channel’s current access in the Earn section before planning around a feature. Location coverage differs by feature and may change.
Content and channel restrictions
Super Chat and Super Stickers
YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Stickers policy lists age-restricted, unlisted, private, made-for-kids, and YouTube Giving fundraiser videos as unavailable. The features are also unavailable when live chat or comments are turned off. The channel must be in a listed location and follow the applicable terms and policies.

Super Thanks
YouTube’s Super Thanks policy excludes channels set as Made for Kids and channels with a significant number of ineligible or made-for-kids videos. Some music channels under SRAV contracts are currently ineligible. An individual video or Short cannot be age-restricted, unlisted, private, made for kids, copyright-claimed, associated with a YouTube Giving fundraiser, or have comments turned off. Super Thanks is not available while a stream or Premiere is live, though it may become available on the archived long-form video afterward.
Terms and local rules
Creators must comply with YouTube’s Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, channel monetization policies, and applicable laws. YouTube says creators are responsible for understanding whether they may offer or receive these payments in their jurisdiction. Check feature availability and the relevant terms in Studio rather than assuming a format or location qualifies.

What viewers pay, and what creators receive
For Super Thanks specifically, YouTube says viewers choose from available price points and purchases are non-refundable. The creator receives 70% of Super Thanks revenue recognized by Google after local sales tax and applicable iOS App Store fees are deducted; YouTube currently covers transaction costs, including credit-card fees. This stated share is specific to Super Thanks; it should not be assumed to apply to memberships, Super Chat, or Super Stickers.
YouTube’s viewer help states combined daily and weekly purchase limits across Super Chats, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Gifts of up to $500 USD per day or $2,000 USD per week, or equivalent local currency. Limits vary by country or region, and these are viewer purchase limits, not creator earnings caps. Some purchases in the YouTube Android app may be billed through Google Play; YouTube says that changes the billing source, not the price or cost.

Can Supers be used as donations?
No. YouTube says Supers and Super Thanks are not crowdfunding or donation tools. Fundraiser features have their own rules: Super Chat and Stickers are unavailable on live streams with Live Chat Donations, and Super Thanks is unavailable on videos with Donations. If a creator is raising money for a cause, use the applicable YouTube Giving tools and rules rather than presenting a Super purchase as a charitable donation.
For viewers, YouTube says a Super Chat or Sticker purchase, the viewer’s channel name, profile picture, and purchase amount are publicly visible. Keep this in mind when describing the live-chat experience to an audience.
Other ways to earn on YouTube
YouTube Shopping is adjacent to fan funding, not one of the memberships or Supers. Eligible creators may promote products from other brands and earn through YouTube Shopping. Availability and specific eligibility rules can change, so check YouTube’s current Shopping guidance before making plans.
