If FFmpeg on your Windows VPS cannot publish to YouTube, check the current stream key and ingest URL first, then verify RTMPS support and outbound TCP 443 connectivity. A VPS in India is not, by itself, evidence of a blocked route or a bad key; the exact error and the stage where it occurs determine the next step.
Diagnose the failure in this order
Work from YouTube’s event settings outward: credentials and URL, FFmpeg’s protocol support, network connection, then the video and audio YouTube receives. This separates a key or configuration problem from an egress problem. Do not post your stream key in a public issue, screenshot, or command example; treat it as a credential.
- Confirm the event and key. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream, or open the scheduled event you intend to use. Copy that event’s stream key and server URL into FFmpeg. The key and URL must belong to the selected stream. YouTube notes that returning streamers may see prior settings reload; if encoder startup reports a key error, its troubleshooting guidance is to obtain a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. - Use the current ingest URL and the matching protocol. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. To view the RTMPS URL, use the lock icon beside Stream URL in Live Control Room. Use the URL for this event rather than a guessed hostname or stale example. For RTMPS, the scheme is
rtmps; the host and application path must be valid for YouTube, and the connection uses TCP port 443. If a relevant SSL error continues, YouTube says to try specifying:443in the URL or encoder port field. See YouTube’s RTMPS help and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide. - Check the FFmpeg installed on the VPS. The relevant executable is the
ffmpeg.exerunning on the server—not a build on your own computer. Confirm that build supports the RTMP variant you selected; update to a current build if appropriate. A timeout does not prove that the key is wrong: unsupported protocol, malformed endpoint, or blocked routing can fail before YouTube receives any stream data. FFmpeg documents RTMP-family output and real-time file pacing in its protocol reference. - Test with a controlled file source. FFmpeg documents this real-time file-streaming pattern:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. For YouTube, replace the example destination with the current event’s ingest URL and key using the syntax supported by your installed build. Keep the key private. The-reoption paces a file in real time; it does not repair a wrong key or a blocked route. If you are relaying a live input rather than a file, inspect that input’s health and timestamps separately. - Identify where the attempt stops. A timeout generally directs attention to the endpoint, RTMPS support, or outbound connection. An SSL or certificate message makes the scheme, hostname, port, and TLS setup the first checks. If FFmpeg connects but YouTube shows no preview or reports stream health issues, inspect that event’s health indicators and the media warnings. If the encoder output looks healthy but delivery is unstable, test outbound internet quality and ask the VPS host to check the route.
- Check egress controls. Verify that Windows Defender Firewall and any VPS control-panel firewall or security policy allow the FFmpeg process or outbound TCP connection to YouTube on port 443. If a connection still cannot be established, ask the VPS provider whether outbound TCP 443 or sustained RTMPS is restricted and request connection-level diagnostics. Steps vary by Windows Server version and provider, so a provider-specific panel path cannot be assumed without those details.

Use YouTube stream health after connection
Live Control Room’s stream status and health reporting can flag unsupported audio or video codecs, missing media streams, bitrate warnings, and keyframe interval problems. Google’s LiveStreams API guidance identifies a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less as the threshold in its GOP issue guidance. These warnings help diagnose the stream YouTube receives; they cannot confirm a key if FFmpeg has not connected. See the LiveStreams API documentation.
Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide says, “RTMPS is a good choice for most ordinary user content, especially if it requires low latency.” Use the actual URL provided for your event rather than relying on an example endpoint.

Information to collect if you need support
- The complete FFmpeg error output, with the stream key and any credentials removed.
- The FFmpeg version and build configuration from the VPS.
- The sanitized command, showing the URL scheme and relevant options but not the key.
- Whether the attempt times out, reports an SSL error, reaches YouTube, or produces a stream-health warning.
- The Windows firewall and provider egress policy details, plus the provider’s connection diagnostics if available.
These details help distinguish event configuration, build support, content health, and network reachability. Do not send anyone the live stream key.
