First identify which kind of frames are dropping: OBS’s Dropped Frames (Network) counter points to a connection problem between the VPS and YouTube ingest, while an Encoding Overloaded warning points to rendering or encoding work the VPS cannot keep up with. Those need different fixes. Check OBS’s Stats window and log, along with YouTube’s stream-health messages, before changing settings. OBS says it is “extremely unlikely” that OBS itself causes dropped frames; its troubleshooting guidance treats them as a connection issue. OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
Diagnose network drops versus encoder overload
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the counters while streaming or during a representative test. Also review the session log via Help > Log Files. The exact wording and placement can vary by OBS version.
- Dropped Frames (Network): OBS is failing to deliver data consistently to the streaming service. Suspect an unstable route, congestion, or a bitrate that the VPS’s upload path cannot sustain.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag or encoding overload: the VPS cannot render the scene or encode the output quickly enough. Lowering resolution or frame rate, simplifying scenes, or reducing encoder workload may help.
- YouTube stream-health warning: use it as an additional signal, but distinguish connection trouble from encoding trouble using OBS’s counters and log.
Do not treat every dropped-frame report as a CPU problem. A more powerful CPU will not repair an unstable network route, and lowering bitrate alone will not resolve a scene or encoder that is overloaded. See OBS’s dropped-frame guidance and OBS’s encoding-overloaded guidance.
Reduce OBS’s rendering and encoding workload
If the stats or log point to rendering lag or encoding overload, change one variable at a time and repeat the same test. The VPS provider, CPU allocation, operating system, OBS version, scene, and current output settings are unknown, so there is no universal preset guaranteed to work.

Lower output resolution or frame rate
In OBS, check Settings > Video. Reduce the Output (Scaled) Resolution and, if necessary, Common FPS Values. A lower resolution or frame rate means fewer pixels or frames to render and encode. Make a small change, then compare the overload counters and the resulting picture; do not assume a specific resolution is optimal for every VPS.
Simplify scenes and sources
Remove or disable sources and effects that are not needed for the stream, and avoid unnecessarily complex scenes. This reduces rendering work before encoding. Retest after each change so you can tell whether a particular source or effect is contributing to the problem.

Choose an x264 preset based on measured CPU headroom
For software encoding, OBS’s x264 documentation lists veryfast as its baseline CPU-usage preset. A faster preset can reduce CPU demand, usually with a possible image-quality trade-off at a given bitrate. If the VPS is still overloaded, test faster options rather than assuming veryfast will fit every workload. The result depends on the CPU actually assigned to the instance and the complexity of the scene. See OBS’s x264 guide.
Use a hardware encoder only if the VPS really exposes one
A compatible GPU encoder can move encoding work off the CPU, but a VPS may not provide a GPU, expose its encoder to the guest system, or have the necessary drivers available to OBS. Confirm the instance’s hardware and driver access before selecting NVENC or another hardware encoder. The VPS details in this case are not known, so a specific hardware encoder cannot be prescribed. OBS documents the trade-offs in its hardware encoding guide.

Set YouTube Live encoder options to match the stream
In OBS, use Settings > Output to configure the encoder and rate control, and Settings > Stream to connect the YouTube stream key. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends CBR rate control and a two-second keyframe interval. Select bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying one value across every stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Use YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations as a starting point
YouTube provides different bitrate ranges for H.264, AV1, and H.265. For example, its current help table recommends 3 Mbps for H.264 at 720p and 30 fps, and 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not measurements of an Indian VPS or its route to YouTube ingest. Check YouTube’s table for the intended codec, resolution, and frame rate; it can change over time.

Match bitrate to both the platform target and the VPS route
The YouTube recommendation is not proof that a particular VPS can sustain that bitrate. If OBS reports network-dropped frames, test whether the configured bitrate is sustainable over the instance’s actual route to the selected YouTube ingest. No route or upload-capacity measurement is available for your VPS here. Lowering bitrate may reduce network pressure, but also reduces video quality; test the trade-off instead of treating a lower number as a guaranteed fix.
Protect the stream key
Use the stream key assigned in YouTube Studio and enter it only in OBS’s stream settings. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement. Confirm the correct stream is selected before starting a live test.

Test the complete setup before going live
- Record the starting configuration: note OBS’s output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, keyframe interval, and the relevant Stats counters.
- Run a representative test: use the scene, sources, motion, and audio you expect during the real broadcast. A static scene may not reveal the workload of gameplay or other fast-moving content.
- Read both sides of the diagnostics: check OBS Stats and log for network drops, rendering lag, or encoding overload, and check YouTube stream health for ingest feedback.
- Change one setting at a time: for overload, try lower output resolution or frame rate, simpler scenes, or a faster x264 preset. For network drops, test a bitrate the route can sustain. Keep the same test content where possible.
- Compare quality and stability: choose the best configuration that runs without persistent drops or overload, not merely the highest resolution or bitrate.
Troubleshoot common failure patterns
| What you see | Likely path | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) rises; no encoding-overload warning | Connection to YouTube ingest cannot sustain the configured delivery reliably. | Test a lower bitrate and monitor the counters and YouTube stream health. Check the VPS network route and available upload capacity with your provider; neither is established by OBS settings alone. |
| Encoding-overloaded or rendering-lag counter rises | CPU or rendering workload is too high for the instance and scene. | Lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes and sources, then test a faster x264 preset. Consider hardware encoding only if the VPS exposes a compatible encoder and drivers. |
| Both network drops and encoding overload appear | More than one bottleneck may be present. | Address the encoder workload and network path separately, changing one setting at a time. A bitrate reduction can help the network side but does not fix excessive rendering work. |
| Settings look compliant, but the stream still degrades | YouTube’s recommended settings do not guarantee that a specific VPS or route will sustain them. | Repeat a representative pre-event test, inspect OBS’s log and YouTube stream health, and adjust the actual bottleneck shown by the diagnostics. |
| Hardware encoder is missing from OBS | The VPS may not expose compatible hardware to the guest, or the required driver may be absent. | Check the provider’s instance specification and guest driver support before relying on GPU encoding; do not assume a VPS label means OBS can use an encoder. |
Account for the limits of an Indian VPS diagnosis
“Indian VPS” alone does not identify the CPU share, GPU access, guest drivers, OBS build, or network route to YouTube ingest. A configuration that works on one instance may overload or drop frames on another. The useful evidence is the actual OBS log and Stats output, YouTube’s stream-health feedback, and repeated tests under the intended scene and bitrate. Official recommendations establish sensible starting settings, not a tested preset for your provider.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or gameplay feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian customers, UPI is supported. This is for uploaded-video looping, not a replacement for an OBS live camera/gameplay broadcast. Start a free StreamNeo day.
