But “dropped frames” can also mean scene-rendering trouble or network stalls, and those need different fixes. Check OBS Stats and the session log before changing settings.
First identify which frames OBS is losing
Run a representative stream until the problem appears. Open OBS Stats and save the log for that session; the counters and log identify which part of the stream pipeline is falling behind. OBS interface labels can change between releases, so use the current Stats and log views available in your version.

These counters describe different failure stages. A general dropped-frames message by itself does not show that x264 is at fault. OBS forum support discussions distinguish encoding skips, rendering lag, and connection stalls; they are useful diagnostic examples, not controlled performance tests. Which x264 preset should you try?
If the log confirms encoding lag, open the stream’s output settings in OBS and find the x264 CPU Usage Preset. OBS forum support guidance identifies veryfast as the reference starting point in its example: if your current preset is slower, test veryfast. If you are already using veryfast and the log still shows encoding lag, try a faster available preset as a controlled next test.

A faster preset reduces CPU work by using less compression efficiency, so at the same bitrate it can produce lower visual quality. There is no single best preset for every CPU, resolution, frame rate, scene, and bitrate. Judge the change by both the encoding-lag counter and the resulting picture, rather than assuming any preset guarantees a clean stream. The recommendation is forum support guidance, not a universal benchmark; an OBS analyzer example from April 2024 also recommended moving from a slower-than-veryfast preset to veryfast in that particular case. Reduce workload in a measured order
Change one setting at a time and compare a new Stats reading and log under similar content and scene conditions. If a faster preset does not resolve confirmed encoding lag, lower output resolution or frame rate and reassess. These changes trade image detail or motion smoothness for reduced work.

Lower output resolution
A lower output resolution can reduce encoder load. Try one step down from the current output setting, then check whether encoding lag falls and whether the stream remains clear enough for your game and audience.
Lower frame rate if needed
Fewer frames reduce both rendering and encoding work. OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting, published June 12, 2021, gives dropping from 60 fps to 30 fps as an example when 60 fps is not working. That is an illustrative troubleshooting option, not a measured benchmark or a required setting for every stream.

Free GPU time for OBS in game streams
If rendering lag is also present while gaming, an uncapped game can use GPU resources OBS needs to composite and render the scene. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, then inspect the render-lag counter again. Consider the trade-off in game responsiveness and frame pacing as you compare results.
Simplify resource-heavy scenes selectively
Browser sources, filters, media sources, and other scene elements can consume resources. OBS notes that sources may use resources even when they are not visible. Disable an unnecessary source or filter, then compare the next log; avoid stripping out scene elements without evidence they are contributing to the problem.

Why lowering the x264 preset may not fix YouTube drops
Changing the x264 preset addresses encoding workload, not every cause of a stream interruption. If OBS reports connection stalls, a faster preset will not repair an unstable upload path. Check the actual configured bitrate against stable upload capacity and investigate the connection. The sources cited here do not establish current numeric YouTube bitrate, keyframe, protocol, or ingest recommendations, so this guide does not prescribe those values.
Likewise, if the log points to rendering lag, focus on scene rendering and GPU availability rather than treating the x264 preset as the diagnosis. Only make hardware, cooling, or networking purchases after the logs point to a specific limitation; a generic dropped-frames symptom is not enough to justify them.

Retest and troubleshoot by symptom
- Encoding lag remains after switching to a faster preset: Lower output resolution or frame rate, one at a time, and compare a fresh log.
- Rendering lag appears during gameplay: Cap in-game FPS or enable V-Sync; reassess OBS rendering with the same scene.
- Connection-stall drops continue: Do not keep cycling x264 presets. Check network stability and whether the configured bitrate fits reliable upload capacity.
- The issue returns only with a complex scene: Disable unneeded browser sources, filters, or media sources selectively and compare logs.
- The counter and symptom do not match your first guess: Trust the current Stats and log category rather than the broad phrase “dropped frames,” then work on that stage.
