Critic scores differ by platform
Metacritic’s scores are edition-specific snapshots, not one universal rating for the game. The critic pools and release contexts differ, so the figures should not be read as a controlled comparison of the ports.

What GameSpot’s 2005 review praised and criticized
In a review published February 23, 2005, GameSpot critic Bethany Massimilla awarded the PS2-era release 7.5/10 (“Good”). Her verdict called it “challenging old-school hack-and-slash action,” writing: “This installment of Ys still provides a bunch of challenging, old-school hack-and-slash action for devoted thumb-warriors.”

- Your net worth is determined by the value of everything you own -- use any assets you collect to unlock the secrets of Strangetown
- Keep it together or you'll go insane -- watching after your aspirations and fears with the Sanity meter will keep you from having a nervous breakdown
- Uncovering secrets will help you keep your sanity. Are you a social climber? A people pleaser? Keep your Sanity meter maxed out by asking the right questions
- Socialize with the other Sims to unlock key secrets of Strangetown - then connect with other PSP players to socialize with them and trade secrets that they have unlocked
Direct combat, with some tactical wrinkles
Massimilla described a straightforward action-RPG loop. Adol fights with three elemental swords—wind, fire, and lightning—and attacks charge magic. Players strengthen him by leveling, improving weapons with emel, and equipping gear. Enemies’ vulnerabilities and bosses’ patterns ask for some adaptation, though the basic set of attacks remains simple. The review’s summary captured the appeal as “Lots of satisfying monster stabbing.”
Bosses and presentation are strengths
The review praised satisfying combat, imposing bosses, colorful environments, a fully voiced cast, and an energetic soundtrack. It considered the music solid and fitting, while noting it did not reach the series’ high standard. Voice performances varied in quality.
Repetition is the central drawback
Ordinary fights could feel like button mashing, and progress sometimes meant revisiting areas to gather emel and experience. Frequent backtracking and grinding undercut the momentum, despite the bosses and action that made the combat enjoyable.

Steam’s PC page showed 90% positive from 1,384 all-time user reviews in a 2026 snapshot. That is a changeable storefront user-review measure, not a critic score, and it should not be combined with Metacritic’s PS2 or PSP aggregates.
PC storefront features are not PS2 or PSP features
Steam advertises its PC edition with an original translation, Catastrophe Mode, widescreen support, map warping, achievements, leaderboards, and a digital art book. GOG describes an optional download of the Ys VI Material Collection, which includes original illustrations and concept sketches. These are PC storefront edition features or bonuses; they should not be assumed to apply to the console releases.
GameSpot lists PC, PS2, and PSP among the game’s platforms. Steam and GOG describe PC storefront versions. Current sale status and compatibility can change, so check the relevant store or platform listing for details. A physical PS2 edition is also a distinct option for collectors; current stock, condition, and price are not established here.
When should you play Ys VI?
Play it when you want a relatively direct, challenging action-RPG and are comfortable with older-school progression that can involve grinding and revisiting areas. The cited reviews do not establish a required series order; choosing when to play it is an editorial preference, not an official prerequisite.
