The parties jointly asked a federal court in Rhode Island to enter a $2.4 million judgment against Tropic Haze and issue a permanent injunction. It was not a damages award decided after a trial.
What happened between Nintendo and Yuzu?
Nintendo of America sued Tropic Haze LLC, the company behind Yuzu, on February 26, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island. Nintendo’s complaint alleged violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and copyright law, and requested damages and an injunction. Those were Nintendo’s claims, not findings reached at trial.

On March 4, Nintendo and Tropic Haze filed a joint motion asking the court to enter judgment for Nintendo. The requested relief included US$2,400,000 in monetary relief and a permanent injunction. The motion says Tropic Haze acknowledged the proposed judgment’s findings as true and accurate and waived appeal rights related to the judgment and injunction.

What did the settlement filings say about Yuzu?
The proposed judgment describes Yuzu as enabling encrypted Nintendo Switch games to run on other devices and says Nintendo cryptographic keys are used in the process. Its stipulated findings include the sentence: “Yuzu is primarily designed to circumvent and play Nintendo Switch games.”
That wording belongs to the proposed judgment filed with the parties’ joint motion. The motion says Tropic Haze and its members agreed the proposed findings were true and accurate. It is therefore important to distinguish the stipulated findings from a ruling after contested evidence: the case ended through a consent resolution, not a trial verdict.

Why did Yuzu shut down?
On March 4, Yuzu announced it would discontinue development and distribution. A contemporaneous Nintendo Wire report reproduced the project’s public statement. The announcement ended the official project; it does not establish that every existing copy disappeared or that all third-party versions and forks were removed.

The proposed injunction is directed at Tropic Haze and the people or entities covered by its terms. It should not be read as a judgment automatically deciding the status of every independent emulator, third party, copy, or later fork. Nor does this consent resolution establish a general rule that every emulator is unlawful. The court filings concern the parties, the stipulated findings, and the relief they jointly asked the court to enter.

Can you still play Nintendo Switch games without Yuzu?
Yuzu’s shutdown does not itself make every existing copy unavailable, but the settlement announcement is not a guarantee about the availability or legal status of copies distributed by others. For the straightforward official option, play Nintendo Switch games on Nintendo Switch hardware. The case does not resolve the legal status of every way someone might run a game on another device.
