yvoiceui.dll is a legacy 32-bit Windows DLL associated with the desktop Yahoo Messenger client. It is not a Windows system file, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or hardware-driver file.
The file is identified publicly as the YVoiceUI Module and appears alongside Yahoo Messenger files such as yacsui.dll, yaudiomgr.dll, yv_res.dll, and ymsgr_tray.exe. Regional or branded variants, including AT&T Yahoo. Messenger and Yahoo.7 Messenger, may also have used the same component.
Yahoo Messenger was discontinued on July 17, 2018, and its service no longer works. That makes repairing the old installation useful only for a legitimate legacy requirement. For most users, the correct fix is to remove the obsolete program and its leftover startup entry rather than download yvoiceui.dll into a Windows folder.
Before fixing the error, identify what is requesting the file
Do not begin by copying a replacement DLL. First determine whether the error belongs to Yahoo Messenger or to an unrelated program using a misleading file name.

Check these locations:
- Read the complete path in the error message, if one is shown.
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error and select Properties.
- Check Target on the Shortcut tab.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps and look for Yahoo Messenger or an unknown entry pointing to an old Yahoo folder.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Yahoo Messenger and related Yahoo-branded messenger entries.
A path inside an old Yahoo Messenger directory strongly supports the identification. A copy in a temporary directory, a download folder, or an unrelated application directory needs additional security checking.
The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe. A missing file also does not prove malware.
Fix 1: Uninstall the remaining Yahoo Messenger installation
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
This is the safest first fix when you no longer need the obsolete client.
Windows 11
- Select Start > Settings.
- Open Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Yahoo Messenger.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal and follow the uninstall wizard.
Windows 10
- Select Start > Settings.
- Open Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the Yahoo Messenger entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the prompts.
Older-style installer
If Yahoo Messenger does not appear in Settings:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Yahoo Messenger or a related Yahoo Messenger variant.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when the wizard finishes.
After restarting, test the action that previously produced the error. If the message is gone, the obsolete program was the requester and the repair is complete.
If the uninstall fails, do not delete random DLLs first. Note the installation directory and continue with the startup cleanup below. Removing the program while leaving a broken launcher behind is a common reason the message continues to appear.
Fix 2: Remove an orphaned Yahoo startup entry
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
If Yahoo Messenger has already been removed but Windows displays the error during sign-in, an old startup reference may still be launching its executable.
Remove it through Settings
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Startup.
- Find Yahoo Messenger or an entry whose location points to the old Yahoo installation.
- Switch it off.
- Restart Windows.
Remove it through Task Manager
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Right-click the Yahoo-related entry.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart and check whether the error returns.
If the entry is not listed, check for a scheduled task:

- Press the Windows key and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Inspect tasks that launch Yahoo Messenger or an executable in its old folder.
- Confirm the task’s Actions path before disabling it.
- Right-click only the clearly identified orphaned task and choose Disable.
Do not delete registry entries blindly. If the startup request remains, inspect the exact executable path first. Advanced users can check the Run and RunOnce registry locations after creating a registry backup, but disabling a confirmed entry is safer than deleting unknown values.

Use this only if Windows offers a repair option and you knowingly need the old Yahoo software.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Yahoo Messenger.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the computer and test the program.
Windows does not provide Repair for every application. Microsoft notes that availability depends on how the program was packaged.
For a conventional legacy installer, the better repair method is to run the original installer again and choose its repair option, if offered. Use only an installer you legitimately retained and can verify. No current official Yahoo Messenger redistributable was located for this legacy client, so do not treat a random download as an official replacement source.
If repair restores the program but another DLL error appears, the installation is probably incomplete or mismatched. Reinstalling the complete original application is safer than replacing individual files.

An antivirus quarantine can cause a previously working application to report that yvoiceui.dll is missing.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections related to Yahoo Messenger or
yvoiceui.dll. - Expand a detection to view its path and action.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only if all of these conditions are satisfied:

- The original path belongs to the Yahoo Messenger installation.
- The file came from a trusted, legitimate installation.
- You can verify the file’s signer or hash against a known backup.
- The complete application is still trusted and required.
A file downloaded from an unverified DLL source should not be restored. Instead, remove the old application and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If the location or behavior is suspicious, use Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
After any restoration, rescan the entire installation directory. A restored file may be genuine while another file in the same obsolete folder is not.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other Windows files are affected
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
yvoiceui.dll is not a protected Windows component, so System File Checker normally will not recreate it. Use these commands when you also have broader Windows corruption, unexplained system failures, or errors involving built-in Windows files.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the original problem.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that it repaired Windows components, or that no integrity violations were found. It does not mean that a Yahoo Messenger DLL has been downloaded or rebuilt.
Repeating these commands will not normally fix an application-owned file. If they report errors that cannot be repaired, install pending Windows updates and use Windows recovery options rather than copying yvoiceui.dll into a system directory.

Fix 6: Do not treat this as a driver problem
Time needed: 5 minutes to verify
There is no evidence that yvoiceui.dll is a graphics, audio, chipset, printer, or other hardware-driver DLL. Updating Device Manager drivers is therefore not the normal repair.

To rule out a related hardware issue:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for devices with a yellow warning icon.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers only if the error occurs alongside a genuine audio-device problem.
- Right-click the affected hardware and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not expect this process to restore yvoiceui.dll. Its strongest association is with the legacy Yahoo Messenger application, not Windows hardware support.
If manually checking every device and driver is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; the free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. A driver update still will not replace an application DLL, so repair or remove the Yahoo installation afterward.
Why downloading yvoiceui.dll is usually the wrong fix
Avoid downloading this file from random DLL download websites and copying it to C:WindowsSystem32.
That approach can fail because:
- The file may contain malware or a malicious imitation.
- The download may belong to a different Yahoo Messenger build.
- The architecture may not match the requesting application.
- A missing dependency may be the real problem.
- Windows may still launch an orphaned Yahoo executable.
- Copying a 32-bit application DLL into a system folder does not convert it into a Windows component.
Public file records describe a 32-bit Win32 DLL, but its exact official version, publisher metadata, authenticated size, and authoritative 64-bit build are not established. Use the DLL supplied with the exact original application build only in the narrow case where you have a verified backup and deliberately need that legacy program. Place it in the program’s own directory, not in System32 or SysWOW64.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
There is no evidence that yvoiceui.dll is a self-registering COM server. Running:

regsvr32 yvoiceui.dll
may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer could not be found. That result does not indicate that Windows itself is damaged.
Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor specifically documents registration for that exact DLL. For Yahoo Messenger, repair or removal is the appropriate path.

Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent change
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a recent installation, cleanup, driver change, or system modification.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error started.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. It may restore the old Yahoo installation state, so uninstall the obsolete program afterward if you no longer need it.

Check the path again and determine which of these situations applies:
- Yahoo Messenger is installed: uninstall it, or repair it using the original trusted installer.
- Yahoo Messenger is gone: disable the leftover startup task, shortcut, service, or Run entry.
- The file is in an unrelated directory: investigate that application and scan the file.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows”: treat the DLL as corrupt or incompatible and reinstall the complete originating application.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing.
- A 64-bit program is requesting it: do not assume a public 32-bit copy is suitable. Obtain the matching file from the exact application build or remove the obsolete program.
Common questions
Is yvoiceui.dll part of Windows?
No evidence supports that. It is associated with legacy Yahoo Messenger software and should not be repaired with Windows system-file downloads.
Can Yahoo Messenger still be reinstalled and used?
Yahoo Messenger’s service was discontinued on July 17, 2018, so the service no longer works. An old installation may be retained only for a specific legacy purpose, and any installer should come from a legitimate source you already trust.
Is yvoiceui.dll safe?
The legitimate Yahoo Messenger component may be safe in its original installation, but the filename alone proves nothing. Verify its path and scan suspicious copies.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Use the exact DLL from the matching application build, and only place it in that application’s own directory when you have a verified legacy need.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, SFC, or DISM fix it?
There is no established connection between this DLL and an official Microsoft runtime. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components, not normally third-party Yahoo Messenger files.
Why did the error start after uninstalling Yahoo Messenger?
The uninstall may have left a startup entry, scheduled task, shortcut, or broken application path that still tries to launch Yahoo Messenger. Remove that requester instead of replacing the missing DLL.
