You do not need an amiibo to get a green tunic in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Complete all 120 shrines and the “A Gift from the Monks” reward sequence to earn the Hero of the Wild set. Amiibo are for other classic green outfits, including the Hero, Hero of Time, Hero of the Wind, and Hero of Twilight sets; their armor drops are random rather than guaranteed.
Which green tunic do you want?
“Green tunic” can mean several different armor sets. The Hero of the Wild set is the route that does not require an amiibo. The classic, retro-inspired sets are tied to particular Link amiibo.
| Set | How to get it | Amiibo needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Hero of the Wild | Complete all 120 shrines and the associated “A Gift from the Monks” reward sequence. | No |
| Hero | Scan 8-bit Link; armor pieces are random drops. | Yes |
| Hero of Time | Scan Ocarina of Time Link; armor pieces are random drops. | Yes |
| Hero of the Wind | Scan either of the listed Toon Link amiibo versions; armor pieces are random drops. | Yes |
| Hero of Twilight | Scan Super Smash Bros. Link; armor pieces are random drops. | Yes |
The amiibo-to-set pairings and shrine reward route are described in Nintendo Life’s green tunic guide. A scan does not promise a particular armor piece, so the amiibo route is not a substitute for the shrine route if the set you want is Hero of the Wild.
How to get Hero of the Wild without amiibo
- Complete all 120 shrines in the game.
- Complete the associated “A Gift from the Monks” reward sequence to unlock the Hero of the Wild set.
This is a substantial completion goal, but it is the amiibo-free option. The 120-shrine requirement and reward sequence are documented by Nintendo Life.

How to get the classic green outfits with amiibo
If you want one of the throwback sets rather than Hero of the Wild, use the corresponding Link amiibo listed above. Nintendo’s guidance says a compatible amiibo can be scanned once per day per Nintendo Account, and rare items are not guaranteed. You may need to try again on a later day.
Scan an amiibo in Breath of the Wild
- Unlock the amiibo rune, usually around 45 minutes into gameplay.
- Open Options and enable amiibo.
- Select the amiibo rune from the ability list and activate it with L.
- When the aiming sphere appears, hold the figure over the right control stick to scan it.
These steps and the once-daily limit are from Nintendo Support’s amiibo instructions for Breath of the Wild. Nintendo lists Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED Model, and Wii U as supported systems on that page. Amiibo functionality requires a figure, but the game remains playable without one, as explained in Nintendo’s general amiibo FAQ.

Defense and set bonuses
The green sets share a Master Sword beam-up set bonus when the Master Sword is available. The defense comparison below is for individual armor pieces at full upgrades, not a bonus for wearing green.
| Set type | Defense per piece when fully upgraded | Set bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Throwback tunics (Hero, Time, Wind, Twilight) | 20 | Master Sword beam up |
| Hero of the Wild | 28 | Master Sword beam up |
Nintendo Life’s armor set guide lists the set bonuses and fully upgraded values. The higher listed per-piece defense for Hero of the Wild distinguishes it from the throwback tunics.
