Spoilers for the final area, boss fights, and ending. Hyrule Castle is open to explore from several directions, but the Sanctum is the destination that starts the Calamity Ganon fight. You can head there directly or explore the castle for weapons, chests, and other secrets first. Defeating the four Divine Beasts beforehand makes the final boss begin with less health; after Calamity Ganon, the story continues into a horseback battle against Dark Beast Ganon.
Choose a route through Hyrule Castle
There is no single required path through the castle. Pick an approach that fits your priorities: avoid as many Guardians as possible, explore the ruins, or use Zora Armor to climb the waterfalls. The routes below are options described by Gamer Guides and the GameFAQs walkthrough, not mandatory routes or timed recommendations.
| Approach | Best suited to | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| North side | Players who want to encounter fewer Guardians | Gamer Guides describes this as an approach with fewer Guardian encounters; it is still a route through a dangerous area. |
| Town ruins and Central Square | Players who want to enter through the castle’s main gate and explore along the way | Gamer Guides describes reaching Central Square and opening the main gate with Magnesis. |
| Northeast waterfalls | Players with Zora Armor who prefer a climbing approach | GameFAQs describes reaching the castle from the northeast and climbing waterfalls with the armor. Gamer Guides also outlines a waterfall route toward the Sanctum. |
Exploration is optional for reaching the ending. If you are focused on finishing the story, take a route toward the Sanctum; if you want castle discoveries, spend time in the halls and side areas before going there. Entering the Sanctum triggers the final sequence, so finish any castle detours you want first.
Prepare before entering the Sanctum
The most consequential preparation is completing the Divine Beasts. According to the GameFAQs walkthrough, each defeated Divine Beast boss removes one eighth of Calamity Ganon’s health before the fight begins. That figure is the walkthrough’s stated mechanic, not a claim attributed here to Nintendo. The same guide says that bosses you have not previously defeated must be faced before you can continue to Calamity Ganon.
#1 Best Overall
- Discover Hyrule as never before: by making your own path, choices, and consequences
- Ingenuity is the key to survival: find multiple solutions to tons of dynamic puzzles
- Surprises hide around every corner: scavenge weapons, armor, plants, animals, and more
- Live off the land: find weapons and armor, cook food, and brew elixirs
- Utilize special technology: the in-game Sheikah Slate controls, objects and enemies in fun ways
- Recover Champion abilities: If Mipha’s Grace or Daruk’s Protection has been used, Gamer Guides recommends letting depleted abilities recharge before entering the Sanctum.
- Bring strong equipment: GameFAQs recommends the Master Sword, Hylian Shield, and strong armor as helpful options, not prerequisites.
- Carry healing and build stamina: GameFAQs advises preparing ample health and stamina. Choose food and equipment that suit your play style and the fights ahead.
None of those equipment suggestions is a hard entry requirement. The Divine Beasts affect the encounter directly; weapons, armor, healing, and ability availability are ways to make the fights more manageable.
Fight Calamity Ganon
Calamity Ganon draws on attacks associated with the four Blight bosses. The GameFAQs walkthrough recommends using a perfect dodge or perfect guard to create an opening, then attacking when it is safe. Move clear of area attacks rather than trying to trade damage through them.
Rank #2
- Enhanced resolution, framerates, and load times optimized for Nintendo Switch 2.
- Explore a massive open-air version of Hyrule with complete freedom.
- Solve physics-based puzzles, survive dynamic weather, and uncover hidden secrets.
- Customize your adventure with weapons, gear, and food you craft yourself.
- Use the ZELDA NOTES app for bonuses, item sharing, and social features.
First phase
Watch the attack and respond with a dodge or guard when you can, then use the opening to deal damage. Keep enough room to react, especially when Ganon uses attacks that cover an area. If you have completed Divine Beasts, the reduced starting health shortens this part of the fight.
Later phase
The walkthrough describes a barrier in the later phase. Continue looking for openings and use the same dodge-or-guard approach rather than attacking into the barrier. When you get a safe opportunity, strike; otherwise, prioritize avoiding incoming attacks.

Defeat Dark Beast Ganon on horseback
Calamity Ganon is followed by a horseback encounter against Dark Beast Ganon. The GameFAQs walkthrough says Link receives the Bow of Light for this fight. Ride around the battlefield and aim at the glowing points when they are exposed. Follow the on-screen prompts and reposition to get a clear shot rather than stopping in the path of an attack.
What happens after the ending
Breath of the Wild does not create a continuing post-credits save state. As the GameFAQs walkthrough explains, loading after the credits returns you to your last save, typically from before entering the Sanctum. You can therefore return to that save to explore Hyrule Castle or continue other activities, but the game does not leave the world in a completed-after-Ganon state.
