BetterVR is released and in active development. It is an unofficial PC mod for the Wii U version of the game, running through the Cemu emulator on Windows. The most recent release we could confirm is BetterVR 0.9.23, dated August 24, 2026. The earlier “imminent” framing came from the original December 2025 announcement, which gave a December 30, 2025 release target that has since passed.
Is BetterVR out yet?
Yes. The project’s GitHub releases page lists version 0.9.23 as the latest build, released August 24, 2026. The project is still in the 0.9 series rather than a 1.0 release, so expect continued changes between builds. Its developer, Crementif, has described a roughly monthly release cadence in the 0.9.23 notes.
If you read the December 2025 coverage that called the mod imminent, treat it as a snapshot of the launch plan rather than the current state. Road to VR reported on the original announcement and the test hardware used at the time, and that reporting remains the best independent account of how the project was first presented.
What BetterVR actually is
BetterVR is not a native VR mode from Nintendo, and it does not run on Switch or Switch 2. It modifies the Wii U release of Breath of the Wild as it runs inside Cemu, a Wii U emulator for PC. Cemu describes itself as Wii U emulation software for PC, and BetterVR depends on that emulator to run at all.

The mod states that it changes the game’s code at runtime rather than shipping or altering game data. That matters for setup: you still need your own legal copy of the Wii U game, and the mod does not replace it.
What the mod adds
- Stereoscopic rendering with 6DOF and roomscale. Head and body movement are tracked through an OpenXR headset rather than a fixed camera.
- Hands and arms. Your in-game hands follow your controllers, with support for weapon and torch handling.
- Gesture-based weapon handling. Swinging gestures are mapped to combat instead of button presses.
- Motion interactions. Puzzles and fire-related actions respond to physical movement.
- Mod compatibility. The README says the mod works with most other mods.
- Optional third-person mode. You can play with a conventional over-the-shoulder view if VR is not your preference.
Requirements
- Operating system: Windows. The project is built around Windows setups.
- PC: A gaming PC with a CPU strong in single-threaded performance. Single-thread speed is the bottleneck most likely to limit frame rate here.
- Game: A legal copy of the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild.
- Emulator: Cemu 2.6. The README says this is the only version tested to work. Experimental Cemu 2.7 builds exist, but they are not the tested baseline.
- Headset: An OpenXR-compatible headset whose controllers have enough buttons for the mod’s inputs.
Cemu’s own published baseline asks for Windows 7 x64 or later, OpenGL 4.5 or Vulkan 1.2, 4 GB of RAM at minimum, and 8 GB or more recommended. Those figures describe Cemu in general. They are not a performance specification for VR, where the requirements are considerably higher.

Setup checklist
- Confirm you own a legal Wii U copy of Breath of the Wild and that the game is on game update version V208.
- Install Cemu 2.6 and set graphics to the Vulkan renderer.
- Install the BetterVR graphic pack and the FPS++ graphic pack. The README warns that the game may crash without FPS++ enabled.
- Set up your OpenXR runtime and confirm your headset is recognised before launching the game.
- Check the current README and the latest release notes for any changes to these steps before you begin.
Choosing a headset connection
The mod needs an OpenXR headset, but the connection method matters. The README recommends avoiding Meta/Oculus Link for Meta Quest headsets because of reported frame-interpolation and visual issues. It points instead to ALVR, Virtual Desktop, or Steam Link.
Road to VR reported testing with a Meta Quest 3, and the project’s materials also reference a Pimax Crystal Super as test hardware. Those are examples of tested configurations, not a ranking. The factors that decide whether a setup works are OpenXR support, controller-button compatibility, the PC connection and runtime you use, and how much headroom your PC has.

Performance
The developer has reported that experimental Cemu 2.7 optimizations improved frame rate in Breath of the Wild by up to 35%. This figure comes from the BetterVR maintainer and refers to test builds of Cemu, not a published independent benchmark. Results will depend on your CPU, GPU, headset connection, and graphics settings, so treat the number as a development claim rather than a guarantee for your PC.
Known issues and launch-era warnings
- Loading screens: The 0.9.23 release fixed crashes at loading screens after teleporting, dying, or leaving a shrine.
- Black screen: The README lists a small chance of a black screen after leaving menus.
- Ladders: Ladder climbing is awkward in the current build, as the README notes.
- Comfort options: The README lists gaps in comfort settings.
- AMD graphics: The December 2025 announcement warned that AMD cards might not work at launch because of a driver bug, and the developer also warned of “some jank.” The current README still notes that some older AMD GPUs may have issues. Check your GPU model against the latest notes before you buy into the setup.
These issues are tied to specific builds. Read the current README and release notes instead of relying on any single list, including this one.

Cost and development model
BetterVR is free and open source. In the 0.9.23 release notes, Crementif wrote: “The monthly-ish releases will continue and stay free and open-source.” You will still need to pay for your own Wii U game copy and your VR hardware.
Because the project is an unofficial mod built on an emulator, it is not supported by Nintendo, and it can change or break with emulator updates. Keep an eye on the release notes if you rely on it for regular play.

What is still unproven
No independent performance benchmark has been published for BetterVR. The main public accounts come from the developer, the release notes, and the original press coverage. That is enough to describe the features and setup, but not enough to rank BetterVR’s performance against other VR approaches or other headsets.
The phrase “full 6DOF” describes the mod’s stated feature set. It does not mean that every player will get identical tracking quality on every headset and connection method.
