There are 36 armor sets in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Most set bonuses activate when you wear the matching head, body, and leg pieces and upgrade all three pieces to at least ★★ at a Great Fairy. The major exceptions are Royal Guard, which has its bonus without the usual upgrade requirement, and sets such as Hylian, Mystic, Phantom, Soldier, Archaic, and Ancient Hero’s Aspect, which do not have a conventional upgrade-triggered set bonus.
This guide lists every set, each piece’s individual effect, the full-set bonus, and where to find the equipment. It also explains which outfits are best for combat, climbing, the Depths, weather, swimming, and exploration.

How armor set bonuses work in Tears of the Kingdom
Armor in Tears of the Kingdom has two separate layers of benefits:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Individual-piece effects: the innate effect attached to a particular helmet, shirt, or pair of trousers. Examples include Attack Up, Climb Speed Up, Glow, Heat Resistance, and Stealth Up.
- Full-set bonuses: an additional effect that appears when Link wears all three pieces from an eligible set.
For most eligible outfits, you must upgrade all three pieces to ★★ or higher at a Great Fairy before the full-set bonus becomes active. The bonus does not replace the underlying piece effects in gameplay, even though the inventory may display the set-bonus label instead of the individual effect label. A complete explanation of the mechanic is available in the Tears of the Kingdom set-bonus reference.

Similarly, Frostbite improves attacks in freezing weather, while Snowquill prevents Link from being frozen.

Set-bonus index: what each bonus actually does
Use this index when you know the effect you want but not the outfit that provides it.
- Attack Up: the Hero of Awakening, Hero of the Sky, Hero of the Wild, Hero of Time, Hero of Twilight, Hero of Winds, and Hero sets gain this bonus after the three pieces are upgraded to ★★. It functions as one level of Attack Up and can stack with other attack effects up to the game’s normal cap.
- Bone Weapon Proficiency: Evil Spirit and upgraded Radiant increase the power of eligible bone weapons, including weapons fused with bone materials.
- Charge Atk. Stamina Up: Barbarian, Fierce Deity, and Royal Guard reduce the stamina cost of charged attacks. Barbarian’s documented reduction is 50%; Royal Guard does not require ★★ upgrades for the bonus.
- Climb Jump Stamina Up: the upgraded Climbing Set reduces stamina consumed by jumping while climbing.
- Cold Weather Charge: Frostbite improves charged attacks in freezing climates.
- Disguise: Evil Spirit and upgraded Radiant generally prevent Stal enemies from attacking Link unless provoked, with limitations against enemies outside the disguise’s scope.
- Energy Recharge Up: the upgraded Zonaite Set increases the rate at which the Energy Cell recovers.
- Fireproof: the upgraded Flamebreaker Set protects Link from environmental flame hazards. It is an environmental protection effect, not a general damage boost.
- Gloom Attack Resist: the Depths Set provides another temporary heart of gloom resistance. It does not make Link immune to normal enemy attacks.
- Hot Weather Charge: Ember improves charged attacks in hot weather.
- Impact Proof: Glide prevents damage from falling impacts.
- Lightning Proof: Rubber prevents lightning strikes from damaging Link.
- Night Speed Up: Dark, Stealth, Tingle, and Yiga increase movement speed at night.
- Shining Steps: Miner creates a luminous trail behind Link while he walks through the Depths.
- Slip Proof: Froggy prevents Link from slipping while climbing wet surfaces.
- Stormy Weather Charge: Charged improves charged attacks during stormy weather.
- Swim Dash Stamina Up: Zora reduces the stamina cost of swimming dashes.
- Unfreezable: Snowquill prevents Link from being frozen by cold-based attacks.
Which armor sets should you get first?
Best general combat sets
Barbarian and Fierce Deity are the strongest straightforward combat choices when upgraded. Their pieces provide Attack Up, and their full-set bonus makes charged attacks less expensive. Barbarian is especially practical early because its three surface caves are accessible without completing a major quest chain.
Phantom is a strong early combat alternative because every piece provides Attack Up and its effect does not depend on Great Fairy upgrades. Its limitation is equally important: Phantom has no full-set bonus, so it does not gain the charged-attack stamina benefit of Barbarian or Fierce Deity.

- Perfect Tactical Chest Protector Set: 5 in 1 set (Vest+Elbow+Shoulder+Crotch Protector+Battle Belt ).
- Adjustable Design:Adjustable Shoulder Strap,Belt,Powerful hook and loop fasteners, adjust the right size according to your figure.
- Hight Quality PC Material: Made of High quality PC Plate and High-density sponge cloth ,more comfortable, waterproof, shockproof and durable.
- Muti-Occasions:Indoor/outdoor activity:Tactcial,Hunting,law enforcement, motorcycle,mountaineering, fashion, and cosplay of game,Halloween Party Cosplay,Movie Costume,as well as a perfect gift for a man.
The seven legacy Hero sets are also offensive outfits after ★★ upgrades. They are worthwhile for completionists and players who want their preferred classic Link design, but they are generally less convenient to obtain than Barbarian or Fierce Deity because their pieces are scattered through Depths treasure chests.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBest armor for climbing
Get the Climbing Set as soon as practical. Climb Speed Up makes vertical travel faster, and its upgraded Climb Jump Stamina Up reduces the stamina cost of jumping during a climb. The set remains useful throughout the game, especially when combined with stamina-restoring food or elixirs.
If rain is the problem, the upgraded Froggy Set is the long-term solution. Slip Resistance helps before the set is complete, but Slip Proof is the important payoff: it prevents slipping on wet climbing surfaces rather than merely reducing the frequency of slips.
Best armor for the sky and dangerous drops
The Glide Set is the best aerial traversal outfit. Its individual Skydive Mobility Up effect improves control while falling, and the upgraded set’s Impact Proof removes fall-impact damage. It is earned from the three sky-island diving challenges, so it is also a natural early-to-midgame exploration target once you begin reaching the relevant islands.
Best armor for the Depths
Use the Miner Set when visibility is the main problem. Its Glow effect and upgraded Shining Steps bonus make it easier to see where Link is going and leave a visible trail behind him.

Gloom Resistance on the individual pieces and Gloom Attack Resist from the full set preserve more of Link’s usable health while exploring gloom-covered areas. The Zonaite Set is the specialist choice for players who build and use Zonai vehicles frequently. Energy Up increases maximum Energy Cell capacity, while the upgraded set accelerates recharge by 50%. It is especially valuable for long flights, powered vehicles, and other battery-heavy exploration.
Best armor for weather-based combat
The weather-attack sets are offensive equipment, not environmental protection:
- Charged: use during thunderstorms for Stormy Weather Attack and Stormy Weather Charge.
- Ember: use in hot conditions for Hot Weather Attack and Hot Weather Charge.
- Frostbite: use in freezing conditions for Cold Weather Attack and Cold Weather Charge.
For survival rather than damage, choose Flamebreaker for flame hazards, Snowquill for cold and freezing attacks, Rubber for lightning, and Desert Voe for heat resistance and shock-damage protection.

Best armor for swimming
The Zora Set is the clear choice for water travel. Swim Speed Up makes Link faster, and Swim Dash Stamina Up makes repeated swimming dashes more economical. The Zora Armor is also important for waterfall access during the Zora storyline.
Best stealth and night-travel options
Stealth is the direct shop-bought option: its pieces provide Stealth Up and the upgraded set grants Night Speed Up. Yiga Clan offers the same core stealth and night-speed utility, with the additional benefit of allowing Link to enter certain Yiga facilities while wearing the full disguise.
Dark and Tingle also provide Night Speed Up, but their pieces are obtained through Bargainer Statues and Depths treasure chests respectively. The upgraded Radiant Set adds Night Glow, Bone Weapon Proficiency, and Disguise, making it the more specialized alternative for players who want both night visibility and Stal-related utility.

Where armor is distributed across Hyrule
Tears of the Kingdom deliberately spreads armor across all three map layers. Understanding the pattern is more useful than searching randomly for every piece.
- Shops and story rewards: Hylian, Flamebreaker, Snowquill, Stealth, Desert Voe, and parts of Zora are among the easiest functional sets to acquire. Froggy comes from the Lucky Clover Gazette side-adventure, while Charged is tied to the Secret of the Ring Ruins progression.
- Surface caves: many combat and classic outfits, including Barbarian, Fierce Deity, Phantom, Rubber, Climbing, Ember, and Frostbite, are hidden in caves. Bring brightbloom seeds, a hammer or rock-fused weapon, and enough healing for cave enemies.
- The Depths: most legacy Hero sets, Miner, Tingle, Bargainer-Statue purchases, and other treasure-based equipment are found underground. Old Maps from sky-island chests can reveal some of the Depths armor locations.
- Sky islands and Zonai areas: Glide comes from sky-island diving challenges, while Zonaite is hidden in treasure chests at major Zonai mining and forge locations.
- Special progression systems: Ancient Hero’s Aspect requires every Shrine of Light, Mystic requires Bubbul Gems exchanged with Koltin, and Evil Spirit requires all three labyrinth quest chains plus their Depths trials.
Old-map treasure markers are particularly valuable for the legacy sets. The maps are not armor themselves; they point to Depths chests. A layered map reference can help connect the sky-island marker, the surface landmark above it, and the underground mine or cavern below. See the equipment and treasure overview at Gamer Guides’ Tears of the Kingdom equipment guide.
Important exceptions and easy-to-miss details
- Not every matching outfit has a set bonus. Archaic, Ancient Hero’s Aspect, Hylian, Mystic, Phantom, and Soldier should not be described as having a conventional full-set bonus. Phantom still has Attack Up on its individual pieces, and Mystic still has Rupee Padding; they simply do not gain another effect from completing and upgrading the outfit.
- Royal Guard is the upgrade exception. Its Charge Atk. Stamina Up bonus is available without the usual all-three-pieces-at-★★ requirement.
- Phantom and Fierce Deity are not interchangeable. Both provide Attack Up on their individual pieces, but Fierce Deity gains Charge Atk. Stamina Up when complete and upgraded, while Phantom has no set bonus.
- Hero Set names are separate. Hero, Hero of the Sky, Hero of Time, Hero of the Wild, Hero of Winds, Hero of Twilight, and Hero of Awakening are different collections in the armor inventory, not one large set.
- Set bonuses do not erase piece effects. If the inventory display changes to the full-set bonus after upgrading, the underlying effects on the individual pieces are still active.
- Weather attack bonuses are conditional. Charged, Ember, and Frostbite are powerful in their intended weather conditions but do not provide the protective effects of Rubber, Flamebreaker, Snowquill, or Desert Voe.
- The Fierce Deity Sword is separate. Finding all three Fierce Deity armor pieces does not mean the sword is automatically part of the armor set; it is a separate item connected to the Misko’s Treasure clues.
A practical armor-collection route
- Buy basic utility first. The Hylian Set from Lookout Landing is a straightforward starting outfit. Add Snowquill in Rito Village, Flamebreaker in Goron City, or another regional set when environmental protection becomes necessary.
- Collect Climbing pieces. Faster climbing saves time everywhere, and the set is useful before you have large stamina reserves.
- Pick a combat outfit. Search for Barbarian or Fierce Deity if you want both Attack Up and the charged-attack stamina bonus. Phantom is an excellent unupgraded damage option.
- Open the Depths systematically. Activate Lightroots, inspect abandoned mines, and follow old-map markers instead of wandering through the darkness. This approach finds Hero sets, Miner pieces, and other underground treasures more efficiently.
- Complete the sky diving challenges. Glide’s Impact Proof can prevent accidental deaths during exploration and makes repeated skydiving safer.
- Upgrade only the sets you use. Great Fairy materials are limited early. Prioritize Climbing, a combat set, Froggy, Glide, Miner or Depths, and the regional protection set that matches your next destination.
- Finish specialized collections later. Ancient Hero’s Aspect, Evil Spirit, Mystic, Zonaite, and the legacy Hero outfits are excellent completion goals, but they are not all necessary for ordinary story progression.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do individual armor effects still work after a set bonus activates?
Yes. The individual effects remain active. The inventory may display the full-set bonus instead of the individual effect label, but upgrading and completing a set does not remove effects such as Attack Up, Stealth Up, Glow, or Climb Speed Up.
Which armor set is best for combat in Tears of the Kingdom?
Barbarian and Fierce Deity are the best straightforward full-set combat choices because their pieces provide Attack Up and their upgraded bonus reduces charged-attack stamina use. Phantom is a strong early option because its Attack Up does not require upgrades, but it has no full-set bonus.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Ember protect Link from fire, and does Frostbite protect him from cold?
No. Ember and Frostbite are offensive weather sets: Ember improves charged attacks in hot weather, while Frostbite improves them in freezing climates. Use Flamebreaker for environmental flame hazards and Snowquill for cold resistance and protection from freezing attacks.
How many armor sets are in Tears of the Kingdom?
The complete reference contains 36 armor sets, including the seven named legacy Hero outfits, the separate classic Hero Set, and Ancient Hero’s Aspect.
Which armor prevents fall damage?
The Glide Set grants Impact Proof after its full-set bonus activates. The set is earned by completing the three sky-island diving challenges at Courage Island, Bravery Island, and Valor Island.
The Bottom Line
For most players, the highest-value early targets are the Climbing Set, a combat set such as Barbarian or Fierce Deity, Glide, and one regional protection outfit. Add Miner or Depths for underground exploration, Froggy for wet climbing, Zora for swimming, and Zonaite for extensive vehicle use. Remember that a full-set bonus usually requires all three pieces at ★★, and that several attractive outfits—including Phantom, Hylian, Mystic, Soldier, Archaic, and Ancient Hero’s Aspect—do not have a conventional set bonus at all.
