To record a game or app on Windows 11 with Xbox Game Bar, open the target window and press Windows + Alt + R. Press the same shortcut again to stop. The recording is saved as an MP4 in Videos > Captures.
Game Bar is convenient for recording an active game or application, but it is not a guaranteed full-desktop recorder. If you need to capture the Windows desktop, File Explorer, or a selectable region, use Snipping Tool or another screen-recording application instead.

- Open Settings.
- Use Windows Search within Settings to search for Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn on the option that allows Game Bar to open and record game clips.
The exact wording and location may change between Windows 11 builds. If you cannot find Game Bar, or the overlay opens but does not provide capture controls, update it through the Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s Game Bar installation guidance directs users to the Store for downloading and updating the app.

You do not need an Xbox console, Xbox controller, or Xbox Game Pass subscription just to use the Windows overlay.
How to record a game or app
- Launch the game or application you want to capture.
- Click inside its window so it is the active application. This is important: Game Bar’s normal recording workflow is designed around an active game or app, not the Windows desktop.
- Press Windows + Alt + R. A small capture indicator should appear, showing that recording has started.
- Alternatively, press Windows + G, open the Capture widget, and select the record button.
- When you are finished, press Windows + Alt + R again, or select the stop button in the floating capture widget.
Microsoft’s keyboard and screen-reader instructions for Xbox Game Bar describe the same start-and-stop sequence.
Include game and system audio
To configure computer audio before recording:
- Press Windows + G.
- Open the Game Bar Settings control.
- Go to Capturing.
- Choose the audio option that includes computer sounds—game audio, app audio, system sounds, and microphone options.
Computer audio and microphone narration are separate. You can record the sounds produced by the game or app without speaking, then enable or disable your microphone independently with Windows + Alt + M.

Record your voice with a microphone
Press Windows + Alt + M while recording to toggle microphone narration. If your voice is missing, check Windows permissions:
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Enable microphone access for the device.
- Enable permission for apps to access the microphone.
- Enable permission for desktop apps to access the microphone.
Microsoft lists these permission levels in its Windows microphone privacy guidance.
Next, check the selected input device at Settings > System > Sound > Input. Select the intended microphone, run Windows’ input test, play back the sample, and adjust the input volume if necessary. The steps are covered in Microsoft’s microphone setup and testing guide.

A separate USB microphone for PC is optional, not a requirement. It can provide a cleaner voice input than a laptop’s built-in microphone, and you can select and test it from the same Windows Sound settings. A PC gaming headset with microphone is another option if you want headphones and voice input in one device.

Open File Explorer and go to:
Videos > Captures
Xbox Game Bar saves recordings as MP4 files. The filename includes the game or app name and the recording date and time. You can also use the Capture widget’s gallery or view-captures option to access saved clips, depending on the current Game Bar interface. If you plan to archive many recordings, you can move the files to another folder or drive after recording. Game Bar does not require an external drive, and the supplied Microsoft documentation does not establish a universal file size, recording-duration, resolution, or frame-rate limit. Those characteristics can depend on the Windows build, app, hardware, and capture settings.
What Xbox Game Bar can—and cannot—record
Best use: an active game or application
Game Bar is best suited to quick clips of gameplay or an active app. It is useful when you want to record without setting up a separate production tool and need optional system audio or voice narration.
The Windows desktop and File Explorer may not work
Game Bar should not be described as a universal full-screen recorder. If you press the shortcut while the Windows desktop or File Explorer is active, Windows may report that gaming features are unavailable. Microsoft’s community guidance records this as a common limitation, although it is not a permanent product specification for every future Windows build. Switch to the actual game or app you want to capture.

Vulkan and OpenGL full-screen games
Microsoft’s known-issues documentation notes that Game Bar may not appear over a game using Vulkan or OpenGL in full-screen mode. If the overlay does not appear, try the game’s windowed mode or a borderless/windowed mode with a desktop-owned window border.

Protected or restricted content
Some applications restrict screen capture for privacy, security, copyright, or technical reasons. Game Bar is not a way to bypass DRM or an application’s own capture policy. A browser surface, protected video, overlay, or specialized application may refuse to record or produce an unexpected result. Only record content you are allowed to capture and share.
How to fix Xbox Game Bar when recording does not work
Work through these checks in order:
- Activate the target app. Click inside the game or application, then try Windows + Alt + R again.
- Confirm Game Bar is enabled. Search Settings for Xbox Game Bar and turn on the recording-related option.
- Update Game Bar. Open the Microsoft Store, check for updates, and install the latest Game Bar update available for your system.
- Install Windows updates. Updates can include fixes for capture, sound, and device compatibility.
- Update audio and graphics drivers through official sources. Start with Windows Update and the hardware manufacturer’s support tools. Microsoft explains its recommended audio-driver update path in its audio driver guidance.
- Check microphone privacy. If the video records but narration does not, enable device, app, and desktop-app microphone access under Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Check the input device. Go to Settings > System > Sound > Input, select the right microphone, and run the test.
- Change the game’s display mode. For a Vulkan or OpenGL title that runs in exclusive full-screen mode, try windowed or borderless mode.
- Repair the Game Bar app if it appears corrupted. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Store-app sequence recommends checking for Windows and Store updates, then repairing or resetting the affected app; reinstalling may be appropriate if repair and reset do not help. Follow Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting instructions.
- Use the right alternative. If your requirement is full-desktop or region capture rather than game/app capture, switch to Snipping Tool or a dedicated recorder.
Xbox Game Bar vs. Snipping Tool vs. Clipchamp

Use Snipping Tool when Game Bar reports that gaming features are unavailable for the desktop or File Explorer. To record with it, press Windows + Shift + R, drag over the region you want, and select the start control. Stop the capture when finished. Microsoft documents this workflow in its Snipping Tool instructions.
Choose Clipchamp when trimming, arranging, adding titles, or otherwise editing the recording matters. Microsoft lists Clipchamp as another Windows screen-recording and video-editing option; it is not part of the Game Bar procedure.
