Start with Zero Escape: The Nonary Games if you want escape-room logic, branching life-or-death decisions and a mystery that connects across a trilogy. It includes Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999) and Virtue’s Last Reward, followed by Zero Time Dilemma.
Start with The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- if you prefer a newer, self-contained school-survival premise, a large cast and tactical RPG battles between visual-novel scenes. Its 15 students must defend their academy from monsters for 100 days. The deciding question is not simply which story is better: it is whether you want to solve rooms or fight through a campaign.

What you actually do in Zero Escape
Buy the collection for the intended beginning
Zero Escape: The Nonary Games bundles the first two games: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue’s Last Reward. That makes it the practical starting purchase rather than trying to locate the opening chapters separately. The third game, Zero Time Dilemma, is the concluding entry and brings back characters from the earlier stories.

Investigate rooms and solve mechanisms
The core loop is an escape-room investigation. You inspect a confined environment, examine objects, combine clues and work out logic or mechanical solutions before you can leave. Spike Chunsoft describes Zero Time Dilemma as letting players “Explore 3-D environments for clues to solve mind-bending puzzles and escape your prison.” That description captures the series’ emphasis: progress comes from understanding how a room works, not from winning a conventional combat encounter.
Expect to read descriptions carefully and keep track of codes, symbols, object relationships and rules. A solution usually follows from details placed in the room, so guessing passwords or clicking every object at random is less reliable than making notes and testing an idea against the evidence. The satisfaction is investigative: the puzzle gives you a concrete answer, while the surrounding story explains why the answer matters.
Make decisions with serious consequences
Between puzzle sections are substantial visual-novel passages. You choose dialogue or actions, and some decisions carry life-or-death consequences. The games branch toward different outcomes rather than presenting one uninterrupted route, so an ending can reveal information that changes how an earlier scene should be interpreted.

Follow the trilogy in order
- Play Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999). It establishes the premise, cast and rules that the later games build on.
- Continue with Virtue’s Last Reward. It is the second game included in The Nonary Games and expands the connected mystery.
- Finish with Zero Time Dilemma. The publisher identifies it as the concluding game, with returning characters and a combination of 3-D clue solving, life-or-death decisions, fully voiced animated story sections, nonlinear progression and multiple endings.
You can technically launch any title you own, but starting with Zero Time Dilemma throws away context that the trilogy intends you to accumulate. If your priority is understanding the full mystery and seeing why recurring characters matter, the numbered order is the safer choice.
Who is most likely to prefer it?
- Players who regard escape-room logic as the main attraction, not a break between battles.
- Readers who enjoy branching narratives and are willing to revisit scenes after reaching an ending.
- People who want a tightly connected mystery rather than a primarily standalone school story.
- Anyone comfortable with long visual-novel sections between interactive puzzles.
What you actually do in The Hundred Line
Defend Last Defense Academy for 100 days
The protagonist, Takumi Sumino, and 14 other students are assigned to the Special Defense Unit. Their mission is to protect Last Defense Academy from attacking monsters for the next 100 days. The official premise is explicit about both numbers: 15 students and a 100-day defense.
That countdown gives the game a different dramatic shape from Zero Escape. Instead of progressing from one sealed puzzle room to the next, you are managing an extended emergency in which time, people and defensive priorities all matter.
Alternate story scenes and tactical battles
The Hundred Line alternates visual-novel or adventure scenes with tactical RPG battles. You spend time learning about the students and making decisions, then deploy them in turn-based confrontations with monsters. Resource and choice decisions connect those two halves: what happens during the story affects how you approach the defense, while battles provide the immediate pressure of the 100-day mission.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

This makes it a better fit if you want an active combat system alongside character drama. It is not an escape-room collection with occasional fights; tactical encounters are one of its defining activities. Likewise, its school setting is not merely a backdrop for puzzles. The academy and the students’ relationships frame the campaign’s choices and routes.
Meet an ensemble rather than a small mystery cast
The game is built around a large group of students, with many character routes and endings advertised by the publisher. That ensemble focus favors players who like seeing how different personalities respond to the same crisis and who are willing to make choices that open different story paths.
The official site credits Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi as the directing and scenario team. That collaboration makes The Hundred Line a natural point of interest for players familiar with either creator’s work, but the game’s actual play pattern remains its own blend of adventure scenes and tactical RPG combat.

Puzzles, combat and pacing: the meaningful comparison
| Aspect | Zero Escape | The Hundred Line |
|---|---|---|
| What you solve | Environmental logic, item combinations, codes and mechanical escape-room problems | Battlefield positioning and tactical objectives; story choices and resource decisions also shape progress |
| How story advances | Visual-novel passages, branch choices and endings that reveal connected information | Adventure scenes and decisions arranged around a 100-day defense campaign |
| What creates tension | Time pressure inside scenarios, life-or-death choices and uncertainty about which branch is reliable | Monster attacks, limited campaign time, tactical fights and the consequences of supporting different students |
| Ideal session | Read a scene, search a room, test a deduction and see how a choice changes the route | Read a scene, prepare a squad, fight a tactical encounter and decide how to spend the next part of the campaign |
| Best reason to replay | Reach other endings and use information from one branch to understand the larger mystery | See different character routes and endings while making different campaign decisions |
Which game has better puzzles?
If “better puzzles” means a larger number of escape-room investigations and a story designed around deductions, choose Zero Escape. Its rooms are the primary interactive challenge, and the narrative branches are built to make those discoveries meaningful across multiple endings.
The Hundred Line should not be judged as a substitute escape-room anthology. Its defining challenge is tactical combat inside a visual-novel campaign. You may enjoy its decisions, routes and battles more than an inventory puzzle, but that is a preference for a different kind of problem rather than evidence that one game objectively solves the other’s design goals.
A useful test is to imagine an hour of play. In Zero Escape, you are likely to spend that hour reading, examining a room and writing down relationships between clues. In The Hundred Line, you are more likely to divide attention between character scenes, a defense decision and a tactical encounter. Pick the activity you want to repeat dozens of times.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs The Hundred Line more like Danganronpa or Zero Escape?
Its school setting, large student ensemble and creator Kazutaka Kodaka may make it feel closer in premise to a school-survival visual novel, while Kotaro Uchikoshi’s involvement signals a connection for Zero Escape readers. Neither comparison tells the whole story, because The Hundred Line adds tactical RPG battles and a fixed 100-day defense loop.

For a player choosing between the two games, treat the creators as a bridge, not a promise that the gameplay is interchangeable. Choose Zero Escape for escape-room deduction and a connected trilogy. Choose The Hundred Line for an original school-defense campaign in which combat and ensemble routes are as important as reading.
Which should you play first?
Choose Zero Escape first when…
- You want the phrase “story-driven puzzle game” to mean literal escape-room puzzles.
- You enjoy branching choices whose consequences may not be clear until a later ending.
- You want a mystery that rewards playing three connected entries in sequence.
- You prefer deduction and object interaction to tactical battle preparation.
- You are happy to read substantial visual-novel passages before returning to a puzzle.
Choose The Hundred Line first when…
- You want a newer release that can serve as your entry point without beginning an older trilogy.
- You enjoy tactical RPG battles as a major part of the experience.
- You want a 15-person ensemble and a school-survival premise.
- You like making resource and relationship decisions over a 100-day campaign.
- You are interested in the Kodaka–Uchikoshi directing and scenario collaboration.
Choose based on your tolerance for commitment
The Nonary Games is the better first purchase when you want to begin a larger narrative arc. You receive two games at once, and the recommended path continues into Zero Time Dilemma. That structure rewards sustained attention and makes spoilers between entries especially costly.
The Hundred Line is the cleaner first choice when you want one current title, one central premise and a campaign organized around a defined 100-day mission. Its route-focused design can still invite replay, but you are not required to establish the first two chapters of another series before the premise makes sense.
Recommended play plans
If you start with Zero Escape
- Install or buy Zero Escape: The Nonary Games and begin with 999.
- Read the story scenes instead of skipping them; choices and character information are part of the puzzle structure.
- Keep notes for room clues, codes and decisions that lead to different branches.
- Continue directly into Virtue’s Last Reward after finishing 999.
- Play Zero Time Dilemma last so its returning characters and concluding position have the intended context.
If you start with The Hundred Line
- Choose the Nintendo Switch or Steam version listed for the April 24, 2025 release.
- Expect a repeating rhythm of adventure or visual-novel scenes followed by tactical RPG battles.
- Treat the 100-day defense as the campaign’s organizing pressure: your choices determine how you spend time and support the academy.
- Pay attention to individual students if you intend to explore different routes and endings.

Final decision
For most readers specifically seeking a story-driven puzzle game, play Zero Escape: The Nonary Games first and follow the trilogy in order. It puts escape-room deduction, branching moral choices and a connected mystery at the center.
Choose The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- first instead if tactical RPG combat, a 15-student school-defense story and a modern standalone entry point matter more than escape-room logic. Neither choice is a lesser version of the other: they answer different interpretations of what a story-driven puzzle game should ask you to do.
