Zinedine Zidane’s first home match as France coach ended in a 1–1 Nations League draw with Italy at Stade de France on October 2, 2026. Michael Olise put France ahead, Alessandro Bastoni equalized, and Dayot Upamecano was sent off late as a warmly received return for Zidane fell short of the victory the crowd wanted.
How France and Italy reached the 1–1 result
The official match record lists Olise’s goal for France in the 55th minute and Bastoni’s equalizer in the 68th. Upamecano was dismissed in the 85th minute, leaving France with ten players for the closing stages. The Fédération Française de Football’s official match record lists the fixture as a Nations League League A match at Stade de France in Saint-Denis.
Accounts of the goals differ in emphasis. The Associated Press, in its report republished by FOX Sports, describes Olise curling a shot from 20 meters after a short free kick by Rayan Cherki, then Bastoni running through to score low inside the right post. AP also credited Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s performance as a factor in the draw.
Le Monde describes Olise’s opener as a left-footed free kick into the top corner. Its account says Italy’s goal followed a mistake by Lucas Da Cunha and that Moise Kean drew the foul that led to Upamecano’s dismissal. The two reports differ on the precise description of Olise’s set-piece finish, but both frame the equalizer as the turning point that kept France from turning its advantage into a win.

France had possession, but Italy stayed difficult to break down
Le Monde says France controlled possession for much of the match but struggled to find a route through Italy’s compact defense. Olise’s breakthrough briefly rewarded France’s control; Bastoni’s response showed the limit of that advantage. France did not convert its chances into a second goal, and the late dismissal made a comeback harder to pursue.
Zidane’s return was the night’s emotional centre
This was Zidane’s first home game in charge of France and his return to Stade de France as a coach, twenty years after his last playing match at the venue, according to Le Monde. The paper reported a crowd of 77,000, chants of Zidane’s name, applause when his name was announced, and a banner reading “Welcome home.”
After the match, Zidane told AP: “I’m disappointed for the players because we deserved better. We had chances to kill the game off but we didn’t and football’s like that sometimes,” he said. “But it was encouraging. Honestly, I’m proud of how we played.”
