In Final Fantasy Tactics, zodiac compatibility is a battle mechanic. When one unit acts on another, the two units’ signs can raise or lower damage, healing, and the chance of certain percentage-based abilities. The mechanic is the same idea in both releases, but the details differ by edition. The original PlayStation game’s rules are documented in a GameFAQs guide dated July 3, 2006. Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is covered by guides from 2025 and 2026, which describe its sign table and effects, but those are third-party guides rather than official documentation.
What zodiac compatibility means in battle
Every unit has a zodiac sign. Zodiac compatibility has nothing to do with real-world horoscopes: it only concerns the signs of the two units involved in an action. In the original game, the birthdate the player selects at the start determines Ramza’s sign. According to the 2006 GameFAQs guide by Andrea Robinson, the signs of recruited generic units can be chosen when hiring them.
How to read the zodiac wheel
Arrange the twelve signs in their usual chronological order around a circle. For any sign, count steps around the wheel to find its relationships:
- Good: the two signs four steps away in either direction.
- Bad: the two signs three steps away in either direction.
- Opposite: the sign six steps away, which is the special best/worst relationship.
Aries shows the pattern. Leo and Sagittarius are four steps away, so they are good matches. Cancer and Capricorn are three steps away, so they are bad matches. Libra sits directly opposite Aries. The table below applies the same counting to all twelve signs, and both editions list the same positive and negative pairs.

The opposite-sign rule in the original game
The opposite sign is the one relationship whose result depends on more than the signs. The 2006 GameFAQs guide states that for human units, opposite signs produce the best compatibility when the two units are of opposite sexes, and the worst compatibility when they are the same sex. Monsters are generally treated as gender-neutral, so a monster matched against its opposite sign receives bad compatibility instead. This is original-game guidance; see the GameFAQs Final Fantasy Tactics zodiac compatibility guide.
The opposite-sign rule in The Ivalice Chronicles
The RPG Site guide by Mikhail Madnani, dated October 1, 2025, lists Libra as Aries’s “Best” sign. It also says the best affinity does not apply to creatures and is negative for them. It does not describe a gender condition. A community guide on Steam, posted September 30, 2025 and updated October 12, 2025, comments that the sources it reviewed left the gender treatment of the opposite-sign rule unsettled. Until a version-specific source confirms it, do not assume the original game’s sex-based rule carries over to The Ivalice Chronicles. Check the displayed result in your own game instead.

What compatibility changes
In the original game, the compatibility modifier scales the affected value. The 2006 GameFAQs guide gives these multipliers:
| Compatibility | Original game (2006 GameFAQs guide) | The Ivalice Chronicles (AppMedia listing, October 7, 2026, weapon damage) |
|---|---|---|
| Best | 1.5 multiplier (+50%) | +50% |
| Good | 1.25 multiplier (+25%) | +25% |
| Bad | 0.75 multiplier (−25%) | −25% |
| Worst | 0.5 multiplier (−50%) | −50% |
The Ivalice Chronicles figures come from a listing by AppMedia, which describes weapon damage specifically. Neither the RPG Site guide nor the AppMedia listing states the same percentages for healing or ability success rates in that edition, so those values are not stated here.

Actions affected in the original game
The original 2006 guide says compatibility affects damage, healing, and the chance of percentage-based actions such as Talk Skill, Haste, Raise, and Lich. It lists these as unaffected: evasion, fall damage, Sing, Dance, Item, and some fixed-rate or fixed-effect abilities. Because compatibility does not touch every action, a sign mismatch is never a reason to abandon an ability it does not govern.
Accuracy in The Ivalice Chronicles
The RPG Site guide describes positive affinity as increasing damage, healing, and accuracy, with negative affinity working in reverse. The AppMedia listing adds that affinity changes ability success. The list of unaffected actions above is documented only for the original game, so check whether a given ability responds to affinity in your edition.

Using compatibility when you plan battles
The 2006 guide’s author states that the game can be completed without paying attention to zodiac signs, but that the system is an integral part of battle mechanics and can help when planning strategies or starting a challenge game. The most practical place to apply it is the birthdate and recruit choices in the original game, since they set the signs that every later matchup depends on.
Because the relationship is symmetric, a matchup that helps your unit strike an enemy also works against you when that enemy strikes back. A good matchup in your favour is a good matchup for them too, and the same applies to bad ones. Weigh the benefit of attacking an enemy against the reverse exchange before committing a unit to a fight.
