Zoeti is a single-player, turn-based roguelite from Dusklight CO., LTD. and publisher Akupara Games, released in 2023. Its defining feature is that you build poker hands from a deck of playing cards and use those hands to choose your actions in battle. That idea is the reason to consider the game. Player reactions on Steam are generally positive, but they split sharply on difficulty, tutorial clarity, interface, and stability, so the verdict depends on how you feel about punishing combat and a dense learning curve.
What kind of game Zoeti is
Zoeti belongs to the roguelite family: runs are procedurally varied, failure is common, and progress carries over between attempts in the form of unlocks. What sets it apart from most card-based roguelites is how the cards are used. The publisher describes the game this way: “Zoeti is a turn-based roguelite that features a deck of playing cards used to create card combos and activate skills in the heat of battle” (Akupara Games, akuparagames.com/game/zoeti).
In many card games, you add cards to a deck, draw them, and spend an energy resource to play each one. Zoeti asks a different question. Your hand is evaluated as a poker hand, and the category of that hand determines what you can do. Readers who came for a conventional deck-builder should expect a different rhythm: the skill lies in shaping the hand you will have, not in sequencing a stack of individual cards.
How the poker-hand combat works
The official Steam community announcement describes the core loop directly: “To do so, you’ll use a deck of playing cards to make poker hands, using a full house or a flush to activate a variety of skills and abilities from the game’s playable characters, Valentina, Alves, and Nicora” (Zoeti official Steam announcement, April 26, 2023, Zoeti announcements on Steam).
#1 Best Overall
The official Steam store description names combinations including a pair, a full house, and a royal flush, and says these combinations can be used to attack or defend (Zoeti on Steam). In practice, the decisions break down into three layers:
- Hand formation. You work with the cards you hold and the cards you will draw, looking for the combination that activates the skill you need.
- Action choice. The hand you make determines which skill fires, so the same cards can support an attack, a defensive play, or a buff depending on what you form.
- Forward planning. Players who write about the game describe tracking not only the current hand but the draws still to come, which is what makes combat feel like a puzzle rather than a sequence of single plays.
Skills are not fixed. The publisher says they can be strengthened through battles, through upgrades discovered during runs, and through help from local characters, so a run’s build is shaped by what you find along the way.

The three characters
The official announcement names three playable characters: Valentina, Alves, and Nicora. The publisher gives a clear play-style description for only two of them, so the notes below stick to what is stated.
- Alves is described by the publisher as using evasive tactics and attacks that wear down enemies over the course of a fight.
- Nicora is described as using fire, ice, and lightning.
- Valentina is a playable character, but the official material available for this review does not describe her play style in detail, so her role should be judged in play rather than from the store copy.
Modes, difficulty and progression
The publisher lists three game modes, three characters, five difficulty levels, many builds, and many enemies. These are the developer’s feature counts, not a measured measure of replay value. How the game opens up is more useful to know before you start, and the progression rules below come from official Steam community posts.

- Difficulty unlocks. Completing a mission on Normal unlocks Hard.
- Story maps. Completing the first Story map opens a second map.
- Adventure Mode. Completing Story Mode unlocks Adventure Mode, which draws from the three story maps.
- Character experience. Both successful and failed runs earn character experience that can open skills and items for later runs.
- What failure does not unlock. Failed runs do not unlock maps, modes, or difficulty settings. Only completed missions move those forward.
Those rules mean a failed run is never wasted for the character who played it, but it also will not reach new content. Expect early attempts to be mostly about learning the hand system and building up experience.
What players say
Steam displayed a “Mostly Positive” all-time rating, with 76% of 81 user reviews positive, as of the October 2026 check used for this article. Steam counts and percentages change over time, so treat the figure as a dated snapshot rather than a stable quality score. The sample is also small, and user reviews represent individual experiences, not controlled testing or a critic consensus. No independent review aggregate was used here.

Praise
Among the top-rated Steam reviews, players single out the poker-style combat puzzle, the satisfaction of juggling hands, the upgrades, and the variety of builds. Reviewers who enjoy tactical planning describe the hand-management system as the main hook.
Criticism
Other top-rated reviewers describe the combat swings as extreme and unforgiving, and say the tutorial presents too much information at once. Additional reviews mention small or awkward interface elements, ability descriptions that are hard to parse, and crashes or bugs. These are individual reports. They are useful for knowing what to watch for, but they should not be read as verified defects or as a measure of how many players encounter each problem.

Is Zoeti hard?
The game offers five difficulty levels, and reviewers describe the challenge as demanding and sometimes abrupt. Whether that feels fair depends on your tolerance for losing a run to a single bad draw. Players who want a gentler start should begin on lower difficulty, understand that Hard is locked behind a Normal completion, and be prepared to spend early runs learning the hand rules.

On Steam, the listed features are single-player play, Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing. The Steam page also lists a digital deluxe bundle that includes the game, its soundtrack, and an artbook. The official artbook announcement, made with the daily challenge update, describes an artbook of over 70 pages. It does not establish a physical edition, so the artbook should be treated as a digital Steam product.

Zoeti is most worth your time if you enjoy tactical puzzles, do not mind losing runs, and want a card system that rewards planning around hands rather than around individual card effects. It is a weaker fit if you want a forgiving first hour, a fully polished interface, or a game where every mechanic is clear from the start. The official material is confident about the hand-based design; player reports are more divided about how well the surrounding systems support it.
