If Zoochosis is crashing on Steam Deck, work through these seven reversible checks in order. They are diagnostic steps based on Valve’s general Steam Deck advice and the game’s compatibility notes—not seven proven, game-specific fixes. Start by noting when the crash happens and whether you have changed compatibility or launch settings; that makes it easier to tell whether a step helped.
1. Update SteamOS and restart
Check for system updates at Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install any available update, then restart the Deck. Valve recommends updating and restarting when addressing system stability issues; this is general Steam Deck guidance, not a Zoochosis-specific crash remedy. 2. Check the game’s Deck status and limitations
SteamDB’s record of Valve’s compatibility details classifies Zoochosis as Playable. The recorded compatibility test is dated 8 August 2025 for build 19498047. Its notes flag manual graphics configuration, occasional prompts that do not match Deck controls, small text, and situations where you may need to open the on-screen keyboard yourself. Valve defines Playable this way: “The game may require some manual tweaking by the user to play.” Verified games are the category Valve describes as working great on Deck out of the box. Playable is therefore a compatibility label, not a guarantee that every player’s copy will run smoothly or avoid crashes. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility program.

3. Verify the installed game files
Damaged or incomplete installed files are one possibility to check when a game crashes. In Steam, open Library > Zoochosis > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Let the check finish before launching the game again. Steam Support recommends file verification as a crash troubleshooting step; it does not establish that corrupted files are the cause in your case. Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files.
4. Temporarily remove custom launch and compatibility settings
If you previously added launch options or forced a compatibility version, record what is selected before changing anything. Then remove the custom launch options and disable the forced compatibility override for one test. This is a general diagnostic check, not a documented Zoochosis-specific fix. If the result gets worse or makes no difference, restore the settings you recorded.
5. Test a current Proton option, one at a time
If the game still crashes, you can test a current Proton version through Library > Zoochosis > Properties > Compatibility. Change only one option, launch the game, and note whether the crash changes. Valve generally recommends trying the latest Proton version for app stability or performance issues, but no source establishes a particular Proton release as a fix for Zoochosis. 6. Reduce graphics load if the game offers the controls
Valve recommends lowering graphics settings to reduce system load, and the Deck compatibility notes say Zoochosis needs manual graphics configuration. If the game exposes graphics options, lower them for a test and change one setting at a time so you can identify any difference. Do not assume every option will be available: a SteamDeckHQ review reported that graphics options were missing in that reviewer’s run. 7. Send useful details to the developer if it keeps crashing
Steam lists Clapperheads’ official support address as [email protected]. Include enough detail for support to distinguish a game-specific failure from a Deck-wide issue:
- Your Steam Deck model and SteamOS version.
- Whether the crash happens before the menu, during gameplay, or intermittently, and what you were doing just before it occurred.
- Whether it began after a Zoochosis or SteamOS update, whether other games are affected, and how consistently you can reproduce it.
- Any compatibility override or launch options you tried, what you changed, and whether reverting them changed the result.
Steam’s current listing gives Zoochosis Windows PC minimum requirements of Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i3-6100 or Ryzen 3 3200, 8 GB RAM, an AMD RX 570 or GTX 1050, DirectX 11, and 10 GB of available storage. Those are the publisher’s listed PC requirements, not a Steam Deck performance guarantee or proof that a Deck storage issue is causing a crash. Zoochosis on Steam.

How to describe the crash clearly
Before contacting support, record whether the game crashes before reaching the menu or later in play, whether the problem started after an update, whether it happens every time or only occasionally, and whether other games crash too. Note any active compatibility override or launch option. These details help narrow down the situation; they do not identify a cause on their own.
The available accounts do not point to one repeatable remedy. SteamDB records that the game runs successfully on SteamOS while also listing usability and graphics-configuration caveats. Separately, SteamDeckHQ described poor performance in its review and reported that reinstalling, changing Proton versions, and experimenting with launch options did not resolve its observations. Those findings can coexist: a Playable rating and a reviewer’s experience do not guarantee the same result for every player, system state, or game build.
