Zorua appears on Pokémon GO’s map disguised as your current Buddy Pokémon. Tap the disguised Pokémon and catch it through the normal encounter; the disguise remains until the capture is complete, then the “Oh?” animation reveals Zorua. Your Buddy does not have to be fed, excited, or visibly walking beside you.
The disguise is a recognition mechanic, not a shiny-rate modifier. A shiny, Shadow, Legendary, Mythical, costumed, or unusually large Buddy can make an imitation easier to notice, but it does not make Zorua more likely to be shiny. You must catch the spawn to learn its actual form and shiny status.

How Zorua’s disguise works
When a wild Zorua spawns, Pokémon GO presents it on the overworld map as the Pokémon currently assigned as your Buddy. The map model, name and visible appearance correspond to that Buddy rather than to Zorua. This is why a Zorua can look like a Pokémon that would not normally be expected in your immediate area.

The disguise is retained after you tap the map spawn. The encounter opens as if you had selected the displayed Pokémon, and the model does not change to Zorua before the throw. The reveal happens only after a successful capture, when the game plays the familiar “Oh?” animation and identifies the catch as Zorua.

This behavior applies to Hisuian Zorua as well as the regular form. In Pokémon GO, it is tied to the Trainer’s active Buddy; it is not a direct implementation of the Illusion ability from the main-series games, where a Pokémon uses another party member’s appearance.
What counts as your current Buddy
The relevant Buddy is the one presently selected on your account when the spawn is generated or encountered. The Buddy does not need to be on the map, walking next to your avatar, fed, or in an excited state. You can therefore use the disguise mechanic even when the Buddy icon is not visibly following your Trainer.
How to catch a disguised Zorua
The process is deliberately ordinary until the capture animation. Use these steps when you suspect an imitation:

- Watch the map for an unusual copy. A Buddy that is shiny, Shadow, Legendary, Mythical, wearing a rare costume, or simply much larger than common local spawns is easier to recognize as an intentional visual marker.
- Tap the suspected spawn. The game opens the normal catch encounter. Do not expect the model to change immediately.
- Catch it normally. Select a Poké Ball and throw as you would for any other wild encounter. The Buddy-like appearance can remain throughout the encounter.
- Wait for the capture reveal. After the Pokémon is secured, the “Oh?” animation identifies whether the catch was Zorua.
- Check the captured Pokémon’s details. Only after the reveal can you verify the species, form and whether it is shiny.
If the encounter breaks out or flees, there is no pre-catch reveal that confirms Zorua. The copied appearance is useful for suspicion, but the capture sequence is the decisive test.

Should you change your Buddy to make Zorua easier to spot?
You can, but this is an observation strategy rather than a gameplay requirement. A visually distinctive Buddy creates a recognizable “signature” on the map. If the same unusual Pokémon appears as a wild spawn, it may be worth tapping even when the surrounding spawn points look ordinary.

These choices are practical visual aids suggested by Pokémon GO specialist coverage. They are not an official guarantee that a particular species, costume or size will identify every Zorua. A normal-looking Buddy can still be copied, so relying only on an exotic Buddy will cause you to miss some possibilities.
Does a Shiny Buddy increase the Shiny Zorua rate?
No. The Buddy’s shiny status and the hidden Zorua’s shiny status are independent. A shiny Buddy can make the map disguise easier to recognize, but it provides no established shiny-rate bonus.

The relationship works in both directions. A Zorua disguised as an ordinary, non-shiny-looking Pokémon can still be shiny after capture. Conversely, a Zorua that copies a shiny Buddy is not guaranteed to be shiny. The copied appearance describes what the spawn is pretending to be, not the species’ shiny state.

There is no authoritative, current numerical shiny percentage established for this mechanic in the available material. Treat claims that attach a specific rate to using a shiny Buddy with caution unless Pokémon GO publishes a current event-specific rate.
Can a Zorua disguised as a regular Pokémon be shiny?
Yes. The map disguise does not reveal the hidden Pokémon’s shiny status. A spawn that looks completely ordinary can turn out to be a shiny Zorua, and the only reliable way to find out is to complete the catch and watch the reveal.
Do not use the color of the copied model as a shiny test. The game is showing the Buddy’s appearance, so inspecting that model cannot tell you whether the Zorua underneath is shiny.
Does your Buddy need to be on the map?
No. Zorua’s disguise uses the identity of your current Buddy even when that Buddy is not visibly walking beside your Trainer. Feeding the Buddy, entering a route, reaching an excited state, or keeping the Buddy model on-screen is not required for the disguise to function.

The practical requirement is simply that the intended Pokémon is the active Buddy when you are looking for the spawn. If you switch Buddies, later Zorua disguises can copy the newly selected Pokémon instead.
What happens after the reveal?
The “Oh?” animation is the game’s confirmation that the apparent wild Pokémon was not what it seemed. Once the capture is recorded, the caught Pokémon is listed as Zorua or Hisuian Zorua rather than as the Buddy species shown on the map.
The reveal is also the point at which you can inspect the Pokémon’s actual attributes. Use the captured Pokémon’s summary to identify its form, check its appraisal and determine whether the shiny symbol is present. The pre-catch disguise cannot substitute for those post-catch checks.

Both regular Zorua and Hisuian Zorua use Zorua Candy for evolution. The stated cost is 50 Zorua Candy for each form’s evolution. The official Hisui event information specifically confirms that 50 Zorua Candy evolves Hisuian Zorua into Hisuian Zoroark.

The disguise mechanic does not reduce that cost or change the candy species. If you are collecting a particular form for evolution, verify the form after capture rather than assuming it from the Buddy-like appearance.
How the 2026 Community Day timing affects Zorua advice
Pokémon GO’s October 2026 Community Day announcement scheduled increased Zorua appearances for October 10, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time, with a higher shiny chance and additional event bonuses such as lure-related benefits. That event date has passed, so those bonuses should not be treated as active now.
The same announcement offered a move incentive: evolving Zorua during the event or within four hours afterward produced a Zoroark with Sucker Punch. That evolution window also ended after the event. It does not alter the underlying Buddy disguise rules, which remain useful outside a Community Day.

Zorua’s disguise compared with other Pokémon disguise rules
It is important not to transfer assumptions from other disguise mechanics. In Pokémon GO, Zorua’s defining behavior is that it copies the Trainer’s current Buddy. The main-series Illusion ability is a different system, and Ditto has its own separate disguise rules in Pokémon GO.
Ditto guidance, including the way its possible disguises are communicated, should not be used as evidence for Zorua. A Ditto-like expectation can lead to the wrong search method: for Zorua, changing or observing the active Buddy is the relevant preparation, while the final confirmation still comes from catching the spawn.
A reliable way to use the mechanic
For routine play, select a Buddy you can identify instantly, monitor the map for copies that seem out of place, and treat every tap as an ordinary catch attempt. Do not spend resources assuming the Buddy has improved the shiny odds, and do not skip ordinary-looking spawns because the disguise is subtle. The map appearance is a clue; the post-catch “Oh?” reveal is the evidence.
