The best free multiplayer game depends on who is playing and what your group enjoys: Fortnite is a flexible all-rounder, Warframe is built around cooperative missions, and Brawlhalla or Fall Guys are easier picks for mixed-skill groups. This list is a shortlist by play style, not an objective or measured ranking. “Free” can mean a free core game with optional purchases, or a free-to-start game whose paid content expands the experience.
How to choose a free online multiplayer game
Start with the kind of session your group wants. Competitive shooters reward coordination and practice; co-op games give players a shared objective; party games are usually more welcoming when experience levels vary. Also check platform support and how friends join: a game may offer public matchmaking, party or custom lobbies, or a separately hosted private server. Those options are not interchangeable.

10 free multiplayer games to play online
1. Fortnite — a flexible pick for groups
Fortnite is a strong starting point when a group wants more than one kind of session. Its central battle-royale format suits competitive squads, while its broader collection of experiences gives friends other ways to play together. Epic’s store listing labels the base game “Base Game Free” and also discloses in-app purchases: Epic Games Store: Fortnite. Treat optional purchases as optional; the free label does not mean every add-on is included.

2. Apex Legends — movement-focused squad competition
Apex Legends is a battle royale for players who like fast movement, character abilities, and coordinated squad fights. It works best for friends who want to communicate and improve together rather than simply drop in for a low-pressure party round. The recommendation guide describes trios and character-unlock progression; check the current game listing for the available modes and platform support.
Best for: Friends who want a tactical, high-energy team shooter. Consider: Its competitive pace and character-based abilities can make it a tougher first shooter for newcomers.
3. Call of Duty: Warzone — a large-scale shooter for Call of Duty fans
Warzone offers a free-to-play battle-royale option for groups who already enjoy Call of Duty’s shooting style. It is a more natural fit for shooter fans than for players looking for a casual co-op experience. The installation can be large, and the game may prominently promote paid Call of Duty content, so check the current download size and store page before committing disk space.

Best for: Shooter groups looking for a large-scale competitive match. Consider: The download footprint and paid-content promotion.
4. THE FINALS — objective-based team shooter
THE FINALS centers on team objectives and destructible environments, giving matches a different feel from a straightforward elimination-focused shooter. The guide describes three-player teams, making it a particularly natural option for a trio of friends. Check the game’s current listing for its available modes and supported platforms.
Best for: Small groups who enjoy coordinated objectives and changing environments. Consider: It remains a competitive shooter, so it may not suit a group seeking relaxed cooperative play.
5. Marvel Rivals — hero abilities and team fights
Marvel Rivals is a team hero shooter for players who like choosing characters with distinct abilities. The recommendation guide reports that heroes are free to unlock, but rosters and modes can change; consult the current publisher or store listing for what is available now.

Best for: Friends who enjoy character-driven team combat. Consider: A hero shooter’s roles and abilities take some learning, especially for new players.
6. Dota 2 — deep strategy for committed teams
Dota 2 is a highly strategic team game with a steep learning curve and matches that can run long. The guide describes its hero roster as free, making it a substantial option without an upfront game purchase. Its complexity makes it a poor default for a quick casual session, but a rewarding choice if your group wants to learn a competitive game together.
Best for: Friends who enjoy deep strategy and are willing to practice. Consider: Expect a meaningful learning commitment and longer matches.
7. League of Legends — a team strategy alternative
League of Legends is another team-based strategy game, with a large champion roster. According to the guide, a rotating set of champions is free to play, while others can be unlocked with earned or paid currency. That means the full roster is not automatically available to every new player.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBest for: Groups who want a competitive strategy game and enjoy learning different characters. Consider: Check the current champion rotation and unlock system if access to specific characters matters to your group.
8. Warframe — extensive cooperative PvE
Warframe focuses on cooperative missions and long-term progression rather than competing against other players. The guide describes squads of up to four and a large amount of content. It suits friends who want to take on PvE objectives together, but its progression and systems take time to absorb.
Best for: Co-op groups who want missions, character growth, and a substantial game to return to. Consider: The progression can feel like a grind, and new players may need time to understand its systems.
9. Brawlhalla — approachable platform fighting
Brawlhalla is a platform fighter that can work for both online and local play. Its straightforward pick-up-and-play appeal makes it a useful option when friends have different levels of fighting-game experience. The guide reports a rotating free roster and cross-play; verify the current roster and supported platforms for your devices.

- Customize your characters with hundreds of colorful costumes

- Experience Local Wireless Multiplayer, exclusively on Nintendo Switch
Best for: Short competitive rounds and groups with mixed experience. Consider: The free rotation may affect which characters are available without unlocking them.
10. Fall Guys — casual party rounds
Fall Guys turns multiplayer into a series of colorful obstacle-course and party rounds. Its format is less demanding than a tactical shooter or strategy game, so it can be a comfortable way to bring less experienced players into an online session. The guide describes rounds for 40 players; confirm the current format and platform support in the game listing.
Best for: Mixed-skill groups who want playful competition rather than a serious team ladder. Consider: It is a party-game experience, not a substitute for a deep co-op campaign.

There are three useful distinctions. A free-forever game offers its core experience without an intended paid-content gate; a free trial is deliberately capped; and a free-to-start game offers a playable base loop while charging for additional content. The labels should not be treated as synonyms, and a game’s model can change.
Fortnite provides a concrete example of the distinction: Epic’s listing says “Base Game Free” and discloses in-app purchases. That does not make every optional item free. For any title, check the current official store page for paid content, subscriptions, and what is included in the base game.
Choose by group and play style
| What your group wants | Good starting picks | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive team shooter | Apex Legends, THE FINALS, Marvel Rivals, or Warzone | These are shooter-focused options; choose based on whether you prefer battle royale, objectives, hero abilities, or a larger-scale match. |
| Cooperative missions | Warframe | Its core appeal is cooperative PvE and longer-term progression. |
| Quick rounds for mixed skill levels | Brawlhalla or Fall Guys | Both can be easier to introduce than a complex competitive strategy game. |
| Deep competitive strategy | Dota 2 or League of Legends | Both reward learning a large cast of characters and team tactics. |
| A broad social starting point | Fortnite | Its collection of experiences gives groups more than one style of session to try. |
Party lobbies, matchmaking, and private servers
“Play with friends” can mean joining the same public matchmaking queue, forming a party or custom lobby, or running a privately hosted server. A Steam guide lists Counter-Strike 2, Team Fortress 2, Sven Co-op, and Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop among games with private-server options, while it lists Apex Legends, Marvel Rivals, THE FINALS, Warframe, Dota 2, and Brawlhalla as publisher-server games. These are the guide’s reported arrangements, not a guarantee that every current version or mode supports the same setup.
If self-hosting is important, check the current game documentation before choosing. If you only need to meet up with friends, look for party invites or custom-lobby options in the current version; public matchmaking alone may not let you control who joins your session.
Other free multiplayer games worth considering
- Counter-Strike 2: A tactical team FPS; Steam’s listing identifies multiplayer and cross-platform multiplayer features: Counter-Strike 2 on Steam.
- Team Fortress 2: A class-based team shooter for players who want distinct roles and objective play.
- Sven Co-op and Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop: Alternatives to competitive shooters for groups looking for cooperative PvE.
- Palia: A cozy social MMO option for players who want a less shooter-focused online experience.
- Browser games: FreeToGame’s catalog includes browser options that can reduce the setup barrier; browse the catalog rather than treating it as a quality ranking: FreeToGame.
Availability, platform support, and the free-content boundary vary by title and can change. For PC games, confirm the current store listing; for consoles or cross-play groups, check the publisher’s page for the exact game and region. For example, Epic’s Fortnite page lists Windows and system requirements: Fortnite on Epic Games Store.

Why free-to-play multiplayer is so common
Free-to-play games are a major part of online play, but historical popularity figures should not be mistaken for a current global ranking. Ofcom reported that five of the ten most-used games across Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam in the UK in May 2024 were free-to-play, and nine had multiplayer functionality. Its figures describe UK game activity across those platforms; users had to be connected to the internet for measurement, but did not have to be playing online at the moment they were tracked. The report also cited 2.65 million active Fortnite users and 0.61 million active Counter-Strike 2 users in that UK platform scope and month. These figures are historical, not current player counts: Ofcom: Gaming in the UK 2024.
