There is no single formula for a Zelda-like: some games emphasize top-down exploration and dungeons, while others borrow the series’ action combat, puzzle-solving, or sense of discovery. These ten independent games offer different combinations of those qualities, so the best pick depends on what you want from the adventure.

How to choose an indie Zelda-like

“Zelda-like” is a recommendation label, not a strict genre. The games below are not interchangeable: some are close to classic top-down action adventures, while others shift the perspective, add deeper role-playing systems, or take a more unusual narrative approach. Use the table to find the strongest fit, then read the individual notes for the important distinctions.

Death’s Door Action adventure with Zelda-inspired dungeons Dungeon-focused action
Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King Classic top-down adventure and action-RPG play A clear retro homage
CrossCode Fast 2D action-RPG combat, puzzle mechanics, and Zelda-esque dungeons More RPG scope and equipment

Moonlighter Included in an indie Zelda-like roundup Readers open to a broader interpretation of the label
Ittle Dew Mentioned by players discussing indie Zelda-likes A further community-suggested candidate

For the last four titles, the available descriptions support their inclusion as candidates, not a detailed comparison of mechanics or a claim that they are universally the best. Check the current official store page for platform and edition details before buying any game.

Six picks with clear official descriptions

1. TUNIC — for isometric exploration and mystery

TUNIC’s official site describes an isometric action game about a small fox exploring a land of lost legends, ancient powers, and monsters. That makes it a natural choice if you want a distinctive world and the pleasure of exploring somewhere unfamiliar. The official description alone does not establish its specific puzzle structure, length, or difficulty, so those should not be assumed from the Zelda-like label.

LEGO Horizon Adventures - Nintendo Switch
  • Explore the much-loved world of Horizon and come face-to-face with the game’s awe-inspiring machines – all faithfully recreated in LEGO bricks.
  • Experience thrilling online and couch co-op action with friends and family (Online play may require a paid online subscription).
  • Enjoy an exciting mix of action, exploration, customization, and laugh-out-loud LEGO humour.
  • Engage in explosive combat with spectacular weapons, power-ups, and gadgets.
  • Soak up stunning cinematic visuals, built with life-like LEGO bricks.

2. Death’s Door — for Zelda-inspired dungeons

Death’s Door’s official site lists versions for PC, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. GameSpot specifically identifies Zelda-inspired dungeons, making this a strong option if dungeon exploration is the feature you most want. That comparison is not a promise that its combat or difficulty will match a particular Zelda game.

3. Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King — for a direct retro homage

The publisher’s press kit describes Blossom Tales as drawing on classic top-down adventure games and classic action-RPG gameplay, with a fable narrated by a grandfather to his grandchildren. Nintendo’s Switch listing describes a vast world and classic action-adventure play. Choose it when you want a conspicuous, affectionate return to the top-down adventure tradition.

Rank #2
The Oregon Trail Nintendo Switch
  • True to the Original
  • Striking Art Direction and Score
  • Respectful Representation
  • Officially Licensed & Supported
  • Deluxe Edition Content: Full game, Cowboys & Critters DLC, 3 art cards, Reversible coversheet

4. CrossCode — for puzzles with more RPG scope

CrossCode’s official site presents it as a retro-inspired 2D action RPG with fast combat, puzzle mechanics, Zelda-esque dungeons, and RPG equipment. It is the clearest pick here for someone who wants the adventure-and-puzzle mix alongside more role-playing systems. Nintendo Canada’s store listing estimates around 30–80 hours of playtime; that is Nintendo’s estimate, not a guaranteed or independently measured completion time.

5. Ocean’s Heart — for a top-down archipelago adventure

Nintendo describes Ocean’s Heart as a top-down action RPG in which Tilia explores an archipelago. Its premise allows her to follow the trail of a flooded kingdom or pursue her own mission. If you want a straightforward top-down setting with an exploratory journey, this is a good match.

Rank #3
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales - Amazon Exclusive Edition (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales - Amazon Exclusive Edition includes a double-sided poster.
  • Hope is Timeless. A brand-new action RPG from the creators of OCTOPATH TRAVELER and BRAVELY DEFAULT – The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales features a bold narrative, deep exploration, robust customization, and intense real-time combat. The adventurer Elliot and his fairy sidekick Faie set off on a journey across four ages to fulfill a thousand-year mission. Enjoy intuitive and rewarding action-based battles with strategic support abilities from a fairy as you reveal this world’s mysterious history.
  • Seven Weapon Types and Fairy Magic - Arm yourself with up to two weapons at a time to do battle with the beast tribes that overrun the continent. Faie’s fairy magic will prove handy in clearing both the fiends and puzzles that stand in your way.
  • The Four Ages of a Millennium - To lift a curse, Elliot and Faie will cross through the Doorway of Time to visit different periods in history. Across every age, a terrible threat looms over Elliot and Faie’s adventure.
  • Personalized Adventuring with Magicite - Customize Elliot’s weapons by equipping different combinations of magicite found during the journey. Try out all sorts of variations and confront obstacles using your own methods.

6. Anodyne — for a surreal, inward-facing world

Anodyne’s official site describes fighting and exploration across natural, urban, and abstract places in the subconscious of its protagonist, Young. It pairs 16-bit-era visuals with a moody soundtrack. Its appeal is less about a conventional fantasy-world premise and more about moving through an unusual, psychologically framed setting. The site is old, so confirm current platform availability on a storefront before purchasing.

7. Hob — a handheld-Zelda comparison

GameSpot includes Hob in a Zelda-fan roundup and compares it to Zelda’s handheld adventures. That makes it worth considering if that comparison is what caught your eye, but the available material here does not establish detailed features or current platform availability. Confirm the edition you want on an official store page.

Rank #4
Ring Fit Adventure - Nintendo Switch
  • An adventure game that’s also a workout
  • Explore a huge fantasy world and defeat enemies using real-life exercise
  • Jog, sprint, and high knee through dozens of levels
  • Control in-game movements with the new Ring-Con and Leg Strap accessories
  • Learn about all the great new features, including a new voice option and a fun new Rhythm Game mode that are included in the latest free update

8. Hyper Light Drifter — a broader Zelda-like suggestion

Into Indie Games includes Hyper Light Drifter among indie Zelda-like games. Treat that as a starting point rather than a full description of its mechanics: the available evidence does not establish specific puzzle, dungeon, or progression details for a direct comparison. Check its official or platform listing for the version available to you.

9. Moonlighter — another roundup pick

Moonlighter also appears in Into Indie Games’ indie Zelda-like roundup. Its presence there supports considering it within the broader conversation, but it does not by itself establish how closely its play matches the Zelda elements you value. Look at the current store description before deciding whether it fits your preferences.

10. Ittle Dew — a community-suggested option

Players mention Ittle Dew in a discussion asking for the best indie Zelda-likes. That is useful as a lead from fellow players, not proof of quality or a factual account of the game’s systems. Verify the current platform and edition details where you plan to buy it.

Check platforms before you buy

Official Nintendo listings establish Switch versions for Death’s Door, Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King, CrossCode, and Ocean’s Heart. Death’s Door’s official site also lists PC, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4. These listings do not establish current stock, physical-copy availability, price, or every platform for every title, so check the relevant storefront for the exact edition you intend to purchase.
