There is no single best route through The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Save in multiple slots, learn how its updated leveling works, and let conversations and curiosity lead you into the rest of Cyrodiil. Treat these ten priorities as options—not a required order—and follow the ones that make your first hours more enjoyable.
1. Keep more than one manual save
Save often, and create new save files instead of relying on a single slot. Make a fresh save before entering an unfamiliar area or reaching a quest objective. If a fight goes badly or a decision has consequences you did not expect, another save gives you a way back.

2. Finish the opening, then choose your own pace
The opening introduces the emperor’s request and the central threat, but it does not obligate you to pursue the main quest nonstop. Bethesda’s developers encourage players to leave the path and discover their own route. Continue the main quest when it interests you; otherwise, let a conversation, location, or side quest take priority.

Speak with NPCs you meet and ask what they know about rumors. Bethesda says conversations can open side quests and adventures separate from the main story, making ordinary encounters one of the game’s most useful ways to find new things to do.

4. Follow a side-quest lead that sounds fun
You do not need to clear every marker or accept every task. Pick a lead that catches your attention and see where it goes. Bethesda Studio Art Director Istvan Pely specifically highlights the Bloated Float, an inn in the Imperial City, as an optional discovery: “I don’t want to spoil it, but you should spend a night there and see what happens.” It is a suggestion, not a required first stop.
5. Explore while you travel
Cyrodiil rewards detours. Take time to inspect places you pass and talk to the people who live there instead of treating every journey as a straight line between quest markers. Design Director Al Nanes advises: “Take your time. Don’t be afraid to stray off the path. There’s so much to explore and so much to find. Dig into all the nooks and crannies. Stop and talk to people. You’ll probably find something that will carry your story in a new direction.”

6. Develop skills that support how you play
In Remastered, major and minor skill increases both contribute to character advancement, while major skills raise your level faster. Enemies scale with your character level, so advancing quickly through noncombat skills such as Mercantile without keeping your combat capability up can make fights difficult. Build a mix of skills you actually use, including the ones that help you handle danger.
7. Sleep to complete a level-up
Skill increases can make you ready to level, but your character level does not rise until you sleep. When the level-up icon appears, find a bed and rest to complete the change. Bethesda Support says each level grants 12 Virtue Points: you can assign up to five to one attribute, and increase up to three attributes at that level. The game’s Remastered-specific guidance is available in Bethesda Support’s level-up explanation.

8. Check your carry weight before a long trip
Being over-encumbered prevents fast travel, so check your inventory before setting out. Bethesda Support states that carry weight is five times your Strength. Armor perks, Feather, and Fortify Strength can help increase capacity; the Bethesda Support carry-weight guide explains the mechanic.

A horse is a convenience, not a requirement. Bethesda Support says horses are much faster than traveling on foot and can be bought at stables outside major cities, with the Imperial City as the exception. If you expect to cover a lot of ground, a mount can make those journeys easier.

10. Put useful items in HUD Shortcuts
Assign frequently used items to HUD Shortcuts, also called Favorites Radial, so they are easier to reach. Do not assume opening the menu pauses a fight: Bethesda Support warns that gameplay continues while it is open. Choose a moment to select items when you are not exposed to immediate danger.

Bethesda Game Studios says the remaster preserves the core game while updating its systems, including leveling for “smoother progression and balance.” That makes Remastered-specific advice worth following rather than assuming every tip for the original release still applies. The game includes Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine, and additional DLC, but available platforms and edition contents can vary by listing and region.
