A useful first route is to get a safe place to sleep and store items, train before picking fights, and then follow whichever opportunities suit your playstyle. None of the steps below is mandatory.
1. Talk to Bara and get your bearings
After you are free to explore, speak with Bara and ask about available help and Master Tomcat. GamesRadar+ recommends this as an early way to learn about useful opportunities, including combat training. Treat it as a pointer rather than a required quest order: you can pursue the main story or other activities first. GamesRadar+’s early-game guide lays out one possible sequence.

2. Get a bed and storage chest
Early quest paths involving blacksmith Radovan in Tachov or miller Kreyzl at Lower Semine Mill can establish access to an owned bed and chest, according to Windows Central’s beginner guide. A bed gives you a place to sleep and a way to save; a chest helps keep useful items stored rather than carried everywhere.

3. Train with Master Tomcat before seeking hard fights
Combat is easier to understand after practice. The official Deep Silver developer tips point beginners toward Master Tomcat near Pond Věžák; training with him can teach Master Strike. Work on timing and weapon handling before treating every hostile encounter as a fair duel. The Epic Games Store guide also recommends training early.

4. Pick up the optional bow supplies near Tachov
If you want to try ranged combat, Windows Central describes a free bundle near a target south of Tachov: a Dogwood village bow, two dozen arrows, a temporary Marksmanship potion, a skill book, and a bow repair kit. It is an optional pickup, not a requirement; you can build Henry around other weapons or approaches instead.
5. Use speech, stealth, and retreat to control danger
Not every problem needs to become a fight. Speech can help avoid violence in some situations, while darkness and stealth can create an opportunity to disengage or gain an advantage. Deep Silver’s developer tips quote 3D character artist Rafael Hayduk: “Vanishing into the shadows can very quickly hand control of the situation back to you.” The same page explicitly advises retreating when a fight is going badly. Leaving an encounter is a sensible choice when Henry is outmatched, not a failure.

6. Learn how saving works in your game version
The Epic Games Store guide describes several save options: story autosaves, sleeping in a bed, bathhouse service, Saviour’s Schnapps, and a save-on-exit option that keeps only one exit save at a time. Availability or behavior can change with updates, so check the current in-game instructions and options rather than relying on a single method. If a bed is available, it is one practical reason to secure lodging early.
7. Recover Pebbles and Mutt when it fits your plans
Epic’s guide describes an early route to recover Pebbles in Semine and a longer route to find Mutt. The dog can help with finding resources, hunting, and combat. Both are quality-of-life goals, not prerequisites for exploring or progressing the story; prioritize them if a horse or canine companion would make your preferred approach more useful.

8. Choose a playstyle, then build around it
Early skill development is more focused if you concentrate on a weapon type rather than spreading points and practice across everything. Method’s beginner guide also outlines a broad armor tradeoff: heavier armor favors protection in combat, while lighter armor better supports stealth. Your choice should follow how you want to solve encounters, not a presumed best build.
- Story first: Continue the main plot if you want direction and forward momentum.
- Side quests first: Use optional tasks for practice, gear, and opportunities before tackling more demanding situations.
- Stealth-oriented: Favor lighter equipment and use darkness, careful movement, and dialogue to avoid unnecessary fights.
- Combat-oriented: Train, focus on a weapon, and consider more protective armor before taking on dangerous opponents.
There is no universally correct order between story progress and side activities in the cited beginner guides. Choose based on whether you want narrative momentum, preparation, or room to experiment.
