If Growtopia closes, freezes, or fails to open on a Windows PC, work through these checks in order. Startup crashes do not have one confirmed cause: Steam says launch problems can stem from different hardware and software configurations, so no single step is guaranteed to fix every case. These are troubleshooting checks, not validated success-rate claims.
1. Restart Windows and try again
Save your work, restart the PC, then launch Growtopia once more using the same route you normally use. Steam recommends starting its general launch-failure troubleshooting after a fresh restart. This can clear a temporary system or launcher state, but it does not identify the underlying cause if the crash continues. Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting guidance notes that games may fail to launch for many reasons across users’ different hardware and software configurations.

2. Install available Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install available updates. Restart if Windows requests it, then try Growtopia again. Windows update labels can vary slightly by Windows version; use the Windows Update page rather than downloading update packages from an unofficial site.

3. Update graphics and other device drivers
Check for graphics and device-driver updates from your PC maker or the component maker, such as the graphics-card manufacturer’s official software or support page. Install only drivers intended for your exact PC or component and Windows version. Avoid third-party driver-downloader utilities: the available guidance does not establish that a particular driver is responsible for a Growtopia crash.

4. Verify Growtopia’s files in Steam
If your copy is installed through Steam, its file-verification option checks the installation for missing or damaged files and may replace affected files. It does not diagnose every launch problem or guarantee a fix.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Growtopia and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam complete the check, then try launching the game again.
Steam’s general launch-failure guidance lists corrupted extracted files as one possible issue, not a diagnosis of any individual crash.

5. Close non-essential background applications
Close applications you do not need while testing, especially other game launchers, overlays, capture tools, or utilities that interact with games. Then try Growtopia again. Do not broadly disable antivirus, Windows Security, a firewall, or other protections; Steam’s recommendation is to disable non-essential software, not to leave security tools turned off.

To check basic PC details, open Settings > System > About for Windows edition, processor, and installed RAM. For graphics hardware, open Device Manager > Display adapters. If you are not sure whether your system meets a listed item, record the model or value and include it when asking for help rather than assuming a part needs replacing.
7. Consider the community-reported Steam reinstall sequence
A Steam Community guide by user kadrelle, posted and updated September 15, 2024, proposes a more involved reinstall process for Steam players. It is user-reported, not an official Growtopia fix, and commenters include people who said it did not work. Consider it only after the simpler checks above.

- Uninstall Growtopia through Steam.
- Remove leftover Growtopia files, if any remain in the game’s installation location. Do not delete unrelated folders or files.
- Install Ubisoft Connect from Ubisoft’s official source and sign in if required.
- Reinstall Growtopia through Steam and try launching it.

Use the Growtopia support link available from the Steam listing. Do not make registry edits, leave security protections disabled, or buy replacement hardware based only on an unexplained startup crash; the available information does not identify a specific cause in your case.
