The best movie tie-in games do more than replay a film’s plot: they turn its setting, characters or mood into something you can play. Matt Ng’s Stuff feature, published 1 April 2024, selects ten examples across genres and eras. It is an editorial list, not a scored ranking or a consensus verdict, and its choices are best compared by what each game makes of its source material.
How to read this list
Ng’s selections range from platformers and beat ’em ups to stealth, driving and action games. Their strongest connection to a film is not always plot fidelity: some recreate familiar characters and places, while others use a film’s world as a springboard for new play. The notes below preserve the author’s judgments rather than presenting a standardized rating.

The ten movie-related games
GoldenEye
Ng’s entry describes a James Bond stealth shooter built around varied levels, a broad weapon selection and objectives that change with difficulty. Local multiplayer adds a different reason to return to it beyond its missions. The feature’s heading gives the year as 2007, but that date is suspect and is not established as a verified release year here.
Mad Max (2015)
Set in the post-apocalyptic world associated with the Fury Road era, this open-world action game puts scavenging and vehicle combat at its center. Building up Max’s Magnum Opus gives the car a continuing role in progression, alongside on-foot combat.

Scarface: The World Is Yours (2006)
This is not a direct film adaptation. Instead, it imagines Tony Montana surviving the movie’s ending and trying to rebuild his empire. That alternate continuation makes it a better fit for players interested in an expanded scenario than a scene-by-scene retelling.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
The game’s Manhattan traversal and web-swinging are central to its appeal in Ng’s account. It also draws on recognizable cast performances, adds characters and includes boss encounters. The feature calls it a strong superhero movie tie-in while noting that its presentation looks dated today.
Rank #2
- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
Die Hard Trilogy (1996)
Rather than settle on one genre, this game divides its material across three formats: a third-person shooter, an on-rails shooter and a driving game, each tied to one of the films. Reworked dialogue helps connect the episodes to their source, though Ng cautions that the play can feel repetitive and old-fashioned now.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
This larger-scale hack-and-slash follow-up lets players take control of Fellowship characters. Its features include two-player cooperative play, scoring and skill rewards, and transitions between gameplay and live-action scenes from the film. It brings the movie’s ensemble and spectacle into a format built around combat.

Disney’s Aladdin (1993)
There are two distinct versions to consider: Capcom’s SNES game and Virgin Games’ Sega Mega Drive game. Ng prefers the Mega Drive edition, praising its presentation, parallax effects, platforming and music. That preference is a matter of taste; the useful comparison is between the versions’ visual styles, music and gameplay on their respective systems.
Peter Jackson’s King Kong (2005)
The game alternates between first-person sections as screenwriter Jack Driscoll and sections in which Kong is playable. Ng highlights the limited HUD and constraints on carrying weapons as choices that contribute to tension and atmosphere, rather than treating the game as a straightforward retelling alone.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
Ng singles out the violent “Uncaged Edition” for making Wolverine’s regenerative combat fantasy its defining feature. Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber provide voice performances, and the story mostly follows the film while adding flashback episodes.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game (2010)
This retro-styled beat ’em up combines brawling with RPG progression and a game-specific soundtrack by Anamanaguchi. Ng’s feature says licensing issues led to the game being delisted in 2014 and that a Complete Edition became available in 2021. Those are historical availability milestones, not confirmation of what is currently listed in any particular storefront.

What makes these tie-ins worth comparing
The entries reward different expectations. A player looking for a familiar film story may prefer a faithful cast or setting; someone seeking a game that stands apart may value a new scenario, a strong genre concept or a distinctive soundtrack. For practical comparisons, focus on:
- Story relationship: Does the game adapt the film, add episodes, or imagine what happens afterward?
- How the world becomes gameplay: Look at traversal, combat, vehicle systems, level design and atmosphere—not only the recognizable characters.
- Genre and era: A 1990s platformer or arcade-style shooter has different design expectations from a later open-world game.
- Platform and version: This matters especially for Aladdin, whose SNES and Mega Drive releases are separate games.
- Ways to play: Local multiplayer, cooperative play or a varied set of modes can shape a game’s appeal as much as its single-player story.
- How it holds up: Ng notes dated presentation or repetitive play for some selections; those caveats belong alongside, not in place of, the games’ historical or genre-specific strengths.
Availability and editions
This list is not a current availability guide. The source does not establish which storefronts, physical editions or platform-compatible copies are available now, or their prices and condition. That is particularly relevant when considering older console releases: check the exact platform and regional edition before buying, and verify compatibility with the hardware you own.
