10 Fun Free and Open-Source Puzzle Games to Try

A discovery guide to ten free, open-source puzzle games, grouped by mechanic, with notes on browser play, downloads, platforms, and licensing checks.

These ten free, open-source puzzle games cover very different kinds of play: logic and board puzzles, tile matching, physics drawing, word guessing, and ball-based obstacle courses. Some offer browser play, while others are downloads. The list is a discovery guide, not a guarantee that every game’s latest build, platform support, or licensing details have been independently verified; check the project page before installing or reusing a game.

Choose by the kind of puzzle you want

The games below are grouped by their described mechanics, rather than ranked. The genre descriptions come from LinuxLinks’ list; they are useful for narrowing your choices, but are not claims of recent hands-on testing.

Logic, board, and tile puzzles

  • Enigma: A puzzle game inspired by Oxyd and Rock’n’Roll. Look to its project page for current downloads and licensing details.
  • GNOME 2048: A single-player sliding-tile puzzle. The core action in 2048 is to slide numbered tiles around a board so matching tiles merge. The official 2048 page describes that basic mechanic; it does not establish GNOME 2048’s current build or platform support.
  • Simon Tatham’s Portable Puzzle Collection (STPPC): A package of small one-player puzzle games, with many different puzzle concepts rather than one single game loop. Tatham describes the collection as designed for short desktop breaks, and notes that most of its puzzle concepts pre-date the collection.
  • Warble: A word-guessing game inspired by Wordle. Check the project page for current access and licensing information.

Matching and shooting-style puzzles

  • Frozen Bubble: A Puzzle Bobble-style game.
  • Zaz: A ball-matching game loosely based on Luxor, Zuma, and Puzzle Bobble.

Physics, movement, and obstacle challenges

  • Fish Fillets NG: A port of Fish Fillets.
  • Neverball: Tilt the floor to roll a ball through an obstacle course. Neverball’s official site describes it as a free, open-source skill and puzzle game. The site announced browser play on September 8, 2026, in addition to its other access options.
  • NumptyPhysics: A drawing-based physics puzzle game in the spirit of Crayon Physics.
  • Pingus: A Lemmings-like game.

Browser play or a download?

Access varies by project. Simon Tatham’s collection offers puzzles playable on the web as well as downloadable versions for Windows and other platforms. Its official page’s current introduction lists a macOS port and displays version 20260906.38e7ea3, but the same page includes a September 20, 2023 note that Tatham could no longer build the macOS version. Because those details do not align cleanly, use the official collection page to check the latest build and platform options rather than assuming macOS availability.

Neverball’s site announced browser play on September 8, 2026. For the other eight games, the available descriptions do not establish current browser availability, download links, or supported operating systems. Follow each project’s official page before choosing a version. The list article’s descriptions and screening criteria are at LinuxLinks’ puzzle-games list.

What “free and open source” does—and doesn’t—tell you

Free, open-source software is not automatically a blanket statement about every asset or dependency in a game. LinuxLinks says its selection criteria included free download, an open-source software license, a playable state, no exclusive dependence on proprietary data, and game media released under an open-source or Creative Commons license. Those are the list’s selection criteria, not a substitute for checking each project’s current terms.

For a clear example of a stated license, Simon Tatham says the Portable Puzzle Collection is distributed under the MIT license. Its official page also describes browser-playable puzzles and downloads for Windows and other platforms. For the other games, current code licenses, media terms, and dependency requirements are not established here. If you plan to redistribute a game, modify it, or use its art or sound separately, check the project’s own license and asset notices.

A practical way to pick your first game

  1. Pick a mechanic: choose sliding tiles or a collection of logic puzzles for board-focused play; Frozen Bubble or Zaz for matching; NumptyPhysics for drawing and physics; Warble for word guessing; or Neverball for movement through obstacles.
  2. Check access: see whether the official project page offers browser play or a download, and confirm that it provides a build for your operating system.
  3. Check the terms: review the software license and, when relevant, separate licenses for artwork, sound, and bundled data.

No universal claim about ads, offline play, accessibility, maintenance, or platform compatibility is established for all ten games. Treat each project on its own terms and verify those details on its official page.
