SuperTuxKart is the best free and open-source racing game for most players. It is approachable, polished, supports local and online multiplayer, and runs on Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, and other platforms through official builds. For realistic circuit racing, choose Speed Dreams; for rallying, drifting, stunt courses, or lightweight 2D racing, the other games below offer more specialized alternatives.
This list covers arcade karting, motorsport simulation, rally, stunt racing, top-down racing, and one clearly labeled racing-adjacent game. “Free” means the official download costs nothing; “open source” refers primarily to publicly available code, while artwork, music, and third-party add-ons may have separate licenses.

Best overall open-source racing game. SuperTuxKart is an arcade kart racer, not a realism-focused simulator, but it is the most complete recommendation here. Its handling is accessible, and its story mode gives solo players a reason to keep playing.

2. Speed Dreams
Best open-source motorsport simulator. Speed Dreams is the strongest choice for traditional circuit racing. Originally forked from TORCS, it aims for realistic physics and supports multiple racing categories, configurable events, AI drivers, weather, and multiclass races.
The official site lists version 2.4.2 and describes it as a hotfix release after 2.4.1. It also provides a master server for comparing lap times. That is useful for time-trial competition, but it is not the same as modern live matchmaking or a guaranteed online racing service.

- CENTRALIZED SIM RACING CONTROL PANEL - Replace keyboard commands with a dedicated hardware control panel designed for simulation workflows. The PXN CB1 features 19 physical controls across 9 input types, enabling fast access to essential simulator functions. Supports up to 30 programmable inputs for full in-game customization and efficient cockpit operation.
- BUILT FOR MULTI-SIMULATION SCENARIOS - Designed for racing, trucking, flight, and farming simulators. The CB1 allows users to map frequently used in-game actions such as vehicle controls, system operations, and camera functions to physical inputs, improving responsiveness and reducing keyboard reliance during gameplay.
- STRUCTURED HARDWARE INPUT LAYOUT - Equipped with multiple control types for flexible mapping: Rotary encoders for precise adjustments; Toggle switches for system control; Push buttons for quick actions; Joystick for directional input; Dedicated system keys (ESC / ENTER / engine start). Each input can be independently mapped within supported simulation games.
- CUSTOMIZABLE RGB LIGHTING FOR VISIBILITY & IMMERSION - RGB lighting improves visibility of key controls in low-light environments and enhances cockpit immersion. Adjustable color and brightness can be configured directly on the device, allowing users to personalize their cockpit lighting for different setups and preferences.
- STABLE DUAL MOUNTING FOR DESKS & SIM RIGS - Designed for flexible installation across common simulator setups. Includes a tool-free clamp (supports surfaces up to 70 mm thick) and 100 × 100 mm VESA mounting compatibility for aluminum profiles, wheel stands, and cockpit-style setups. Provides stable positioning during simulation gameplay.
Speed Dreams has a steeper learning curve than SuperTuxKart. A gamepad is a sensible starting point; a wheel and pedals may be attractive to sim enthusiasts, but compatibility and force-feedback behavior depend on the operating system and build.
Choose it if: you enjoy racing lines, race configuration, and learning realistic vehicle behavior. Skip it if: you want a five-minute arcade game with no setup.
3. Stunt Rally
Best for off-road stunts. Stunt Rally broadens the idea of racing with dirt stages, jumps, unusual terrain, and dramatic course layouts. It is better understood as rally-and-stunt driving than as a conventional circuit simulator.
That focus is its appeal: the tracks can feel more adventurous than standard laps. It can also make the handling feel less predictable to players expecting realistic rally competition. Current downloads, operating-system packages, and multiplayer availability can vary, so use the project repository as the starting point.
Choose it if: you want jumps and terrain more than polished circuit racing. Skip it if: you need a clearly maintained, one-click installation or modern matchmaking.

- EASY SETUP & READY TO DRIVE - Designed for convenience, this gaming wheel installs quickly with a tool-free clamp system for desks and tables up to 1.8″ thick. Just plug and play with no additional software required. A great fit for home setups, bedrooms, or shared spaces.
- COMPLETE WHEEL & PEDAL SET FOR PC & PLAYSTATION – Includes a compact wheel and pedal set with Hall Effect sensor technology for smooth, consistent input. Designed for PC, PS5, and PS4, it delivers a more immersive and controlled driving experience right out of the box.
The official repository lists FreeBSD, Linux, macOS, and Windows among its supported platforms. In practice, the experience depends on the available build, included assets, controller configuration, and the project’s current community maintenance. Public source code alone does not guarantee frequent releases or a large active player base.
Choose it if: drifting and configuration interest you. Skip it if: you want the smoothest installation or a large, current online community.
5. Trigger Rally
Best for quick rally stages. Trigger Rally concentrates on short, time-focused rally driving rather than trying to be a complete motorsport package. Loose surfaces and stage-based competition make it a good change of pace from circuit racing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Its narrower scope is also the main limitation. Expect fewer systems and less long-term progression than in SuperTuxKart or Speed Dreams. Check the project page for the current build and platform support before installing, particularly on newer desktop distributions.

6. Ultimate Stunts
Best retro stunt racer. Ultimate Stunts focuses on jumps, loops, and deliberately constructed stunt tracks, with a classic 3D presentation and a creative course-building angle.
This is a novelty pick rather than a modern graphics showcase. Older interfaces and installation packages may require more patience, and readers should check whether the current download includes the required game data and editor.

- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.

7. TORCS
Best for open-source racing history and tinkering. TORCS is a foundational traditional racing simulator and the project from which Speed Dreams emerged. It remains interesting to readers who want to explore older open-source racing software, experiment with AI, or understand the genre’s lineage.
It should not be the default recommendation for new players. Its visuals and interface are dated, installation may be less convenient, and Speed Dreams is generally the more natural starting point for current simulator-style racing.
8. Dust Racing 2D
Best lightweight top-down racer. Dust Racing 2D replaces the cockpit view with simple overhead action, making it easy to understand and potentially suitable for modest hardware. Short races and uncomplicated controls are the attraction.
It does not offer the immersion or vehicle modeling of a 3D simulator, and its smaller community means that current packages and multiplayer features should be checked rather than assumed.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Pixel Wheels
Best casual pixel racer. Pixel Wheels offers colorful top-down racing with a deliberately compact, approachable feel. It is a good choice for quick sessions when realistic handling and long career systems are not priorities.

Check the current repository for the latest desktop or mobile releases and licensing details. Code, artwork, music, and other assets do not necessarily share identical terms, so “open source” should be read precisely rather than assumed for every component.

10. Armagetron Advanced
Best unconventional racing game. Armagetron Advanced is a light-cycle game played on a grid. You accelerate, place an ever-growing wall, and force opponents into collisions while trying to survive. It has no cars, laps, or conventional tracks, but its speed, line placement, and competitive positioning make it a legitimate racing-adjacent choice.
Its strongest appeal is multiplayer competition, whether locally or over a network. Players expecting a conventional driving game may find it outside the genre; players looking for a fast competitive party game may find it more replayable than another ordinary racer.

How to choose and install one
Pick by driving style
- Arcade: SuperTuxKart.
- Simulation: Speed Dreams, then VDrift or TORCS.
- Rally and stunts: Stunt Rally or Trigger Rally.
- Retro stunt courses: Ultimate Stunts.
- Top-down and low-spec: Dust Racing 2D or Pixel Wheels.

Use the official download route
- Open the project’s official site, repository, or release page.
- Prefer the latest stable release over a nightly or development build.
- On Linux, use an official distribution package, Flatpak, AppImage, or archive when available.
- Connect a controller before launching if the game detects devices only at startup.
- In the input menu, map steering, accelerate, brake, handbrake, reset, and pause.
- If a project is source-only or needs old dependencies, treat it as an enthusiast installation rather than an easy recommendation.
Gamepad or wheel?
A standard gamepad is the practical choice for SuperTuxKart, top-down racers, Ultimate Stunts, and Armagetron Advanced. Speed Dreams and VDrift are the logical candidates for a wheel and pedals, but support depends on the game version, operating system, drivers, and configuration. Do not assume force feedback works simply because a title is a simulator.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat “free and open source” means here
Free downloads, open code, and open assets are different claims. A project may publish its source under a recognized license while using artwork, music, models, or legacy assets with separate terms. Community add-ons may also have their own licenses. Donations, pay-what-you-want distribution, and optional support payments do not make an official free download a paid game.
Likewise, “multiplayer” needs a precise label. Split-screen, same-device play, LAN, live internet racing, and a leaderboard or lap-time server are different features. Speed Dreams’ master server is for comparing lap times; SuperTuxKart’s official FAQ confirms online multiplayer.
Final recommendations
- Most people: SuperTuxKart.
- Simulation fans: Speed Dreams.
- Drift enthusiasts: VDrift.
- Rally fans: Stunt Rally or Trigger Rally.
- Low-end hardware: Dust Racing 2D or Pixel Wheels.
- Competitive oddball: Armagetron Advanced.
