This is a historical roundup of PS5 news from July 2025. The month’s biggest developments were new PlayStation Plus games, a DualSense multi-device-pairing beta, continued PlayStation Portal cloud-streaming testing, and several major game announcements. The DualSense feature was not a standard public PS5 firmware release for everyone in July.
July 2025 PS5 news at a glance
- PS Plus Monthly Games: Diablo IV, The King of Fighters XV, and Jusant were available from July 1 through August 4, 2025.
- PS Plus Game Catalog: Extra and Premium members received headline additions including Cyberpunk 2077, Abiotic Factor, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, Tropico 6, and Planet Zoo.
- System software: Sony announced a beta for DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers that could remember up to four paired devices.
- PlayStation Portal: Cloud streaming remained a beta-era feature in July; the later full launch arrived on November 5, 2025.

PS Plus Monthly Games for July 2025
Every PlayStation Plus tier received the July Monthly Games lineup:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Diablo IV — PS5 and PS4
- The King of Fighters XV — PS5 and PS4
- Jusant — PS5 and PS4
The games could be added to a member’s library between July 1 and August 4, 2025. Once claimed, access remained tied to an active qualifying PlayStation Plus subscription; adding a game was not the same as purchasing it outright. Sony announced the lineup as part of PlayStation Plus’s 15th-anniversary promotion. See Sony’s announcement.
Which July game suited which player?
- Diablo IV: the obvious choice for players who wanted a large action RPG with seasonal progression and co-op.
- The King of Fighters XV: the pick for fighting-game fans looking for a technical 2D fighter.
- Jusant: a quieter, shorter adventure focused on climbing, exploration, and environmental storytelling.
If you are reading this after August 4, 2025, the July claim window has ended. The games may still be available for separate purchase, but this article should not be read as a current offer.

PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog additions
July’s Game Catalog news was separate from the Monthly Games program. Extra and Premium members received access to rotating catalog titles, subject to plan, territory, platform version, and availability.
- Cyberpunk 2077 — available July 9
- Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden — available July 15
- Tropico 6
- Planet Zoo
- Abiotic Factor — available July 22
Premium members also received Twisted Metal 3 and Twisted Metal 4 through the Classics Catalog. Sony’s catalog announcement contains the relevant lineup and dates.
Catalog access is temporary. A game can leave the service later, and having it in the catalog does not create permanent ownership. PS4 and PS5 versions, upgrade paths, and local availability can also differ. Check the PlayStation Store for your country before assuming a specific version is included.

Was there a PS5 system update in July 2025?
Not in the way many headlines implied. On July 23, Sony announced a PS5 system-software beta that previewed multi-device pairing for DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers. It was not a generally available stable feature for every PS5 owner that month.
The feature allowed one controller to remember up to four devices. Each slot was assigned to an action button:
- Slot 1: PS + Triangle
- Slot 2: PS + Circle
- Slot 3: PS + Cross
- Slot 4: PS + Square
Sony later said the global rollout would begin in September 2025. Therefore, July 2025 coverage should describe this as a beta announcement, not as a July firmware feature that everyone could immediately use. Read Sony’s beta announcement.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
How controller registration worked in the beta
- Disconnect the controller’s USB cable.
- Hold the PS button until the light bar and player indicator turn off.
- Hold the PS button and the desired action button for more than five seconds.
- Wait for the light bar and player indicator to flash twice.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the target device and select the DualSense controller.
To switch devices, turn on the desired device, then hold PS plus its assigned action button for about three seconds. Release when the light bar and player indicator flash.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBeta availability could depend on region, invitation, account eligibility, and software version. Bluetooth compatibility also depends on the target device and operating system. The feature was useful for people moving between PS5, PC, Mac, or mobile devices, but four remembered slots did not eliminate every pairing or firmware issue.
What happened with PlayStation Portal?
PlayStation Portal remained primarily a Remote Play device in July 2025. Remote Play streams games from the owner’s PS5, so the console must be configured, connected, and available. Portal was not a standalone PS5 replacement.
Rank #4
- Slim Design, players get powerful gaming technology packed inside a sleek and compact console design.
- 825GB of storage, keep your favorite games raeady and waiting for you to jump in and play
- Ultra-High Speed SSD, maximize yoru play sessions with near instant load times for installed PS5 games
- Integrated I/O, the custom integration of the PS5 console's systems lets creators pull datat from the SSD so quickly that they can design games in ways never before possible
- Ray Tracing, immerse yourself in owrlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games
Cloud streaming was a separate feature tied to PlayStation Plus Premium and supported titles. In July, it was still in its beta phase. Sony’s April update had improved the beta experience and added sorting options for cloud-streaming games, but the later expansion to select owned digital PS5 games did not arrive until November 5, 2025.
That distinction matters:
- Remote Play: uses your own PS5.
- Cloud streaming: uses Sony’s servers and requires supported content, a suitable connection, and the relevant Premium entitlement.
- Owned-game streaming: the broader support announced in November was not the July 2025 experience.
Streaming quality depends on network conditions and should not be treated as equivalent to playing locally on a PS5. For current Portal software information, use Sony’s Portal support page. Sony’s later cloud-streaming announcement is available here.
Major PS5 game news from July
The Last of Us Part II Remastered received a Chronological Experience
On July 8, Naughty Dog highlighted the Chronological Experience for The Last of Us Part II Remastered. The mode rearranges the game’s story into chronological order, offering a different way to follow its events than the original structure. It was a game-content update, not a PS5 system update.

The Last of Us Complete physical edition arrived
The physical The Last of Us Complete Collector’s Edition released on July 10, bringing together the PS5 versions of The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered in a collector-focused package. The release had been announced earlier by PlayStation. See the original announcement.
Ghost of Yōtei received a State of Play presentation
On July 10, Sony presented more gameplay and details for Ghost of Yōtei. This was a major first-party announcement for PS5, but it was not a release or console firmware update.
Time Flies was announced for PS5
On July 31, Time Flies was announced for PS5. It joined July’s forward-looking announcements rather than representing a game that necessarily became available that day.

Which PS Plus tier made sense?
| Tier | Best suited to | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Players who need online multiplayer and want the monthly games | Monthly titles must be claimed in time and require an active membership to play |
| Extra | Players who prefer a large rotating PS4 and PS5 library | Catalog games can leave and are not permanently owned |
| Premium | Players interested in Classics, trials, and supported cloud features | Streaming is title-, region-, plan-, and connection-dependent |
Extra or Premium was not automatically better for every player. Essential was the more sensible choice for someone who mainly needed online multiplayer. Extra made more sense for players who regularly played several catalog games. Premium justified its higher tier only for people who would use its Classics, trials, or supported streaming features. Do not treat July 2025 promotion pricing as a current price.
What PS5 owners should have done
- Claim the July Monthly Games before August 4, 2025 if you were an active member at the time.
- Check the Game Catalog separately rather than assuming Extra or Premium titles were permanent purchases.
- Treat the DualSense feature as beta software and avoid enrolling solely for one convenience feature unless you accepted possible changes or instability.
- Use official support pages for current software instructions. Menu labels and rollout status can change after a beta.
- Choose Portal based on your use case. It was most useful for PS5 Remote Play in July, while cloud streaming had separate Premium and compatibility requirements.
Bottom line
July 2025 was more significant for PS Plus content and PlayStation game news than for a universal PS5 firmware overhaul. The key system-related story was Sony’s DualSense multi-device-pairing beta, while PlayStation Portal cloud streaming was still developing. For anyone reviewing the month now, the dates and status labels matter: Monthly Games had a fixed claim window, Game Catalog access rotated, and the controller feature was announced for beta testing rather than released as a standard July update.
