The Valve Steam Deck OLED is the best PC gaming handheld for most Steam-first players, while the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X is the stronger premium Windows choice. If you want a larger SteamOS screen, consider the Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS; if you want the biggest OLED display and detachable controllers, choose the Lenovo Legion Go 2.
There is no universal winner. Your best choice depends on whether you use Steam, Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic or GOG; how much performance you need; whether you play plugged in or on battery; and how much weight and setup friction you will tolerate. This guide focuses on the US market and the product landscape available as of August 16, 2026. What counts as a PC gaming handheld?
A PC gaming handheld is a portable computer with an integrated display, controls, battery, cooling system and an x86-class processor capable of running native PC games locally. Most use either SteamOS, Windows or another desktop operating system.
Recommended Free Tools
That makes these devices different from a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, a PlayStation Portal, an Android retro handheld or a cloud-only device. Remote-play accessories and streaming handhelds can be excellent for accessing another computer or console, but they are not the same as a handheld PC that installs and runs games on its own hardware. A traditional gaming laptop is more powerful and better for keyboard-and-mouse work, but it is less convenient for sofa, bed and travel play.

“Runs PC games” also does not mean “runs every PC game well.” Results depend on power limits, resolution, upscaling, drivers, anti-cheat support, launcher compatibility and whether the game has usable controller support.
Quick picks
| Handheld | Best for | Operating system | Main strength | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Valve Steam Deck OLED | Steam simplicity | SteamOS | Most console-like Steam experience | Less compatible with some Windows-first games and launchers |
| Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS | SteamOS with a larger screen | SteamOS | More screen and performance headroom | Larger, heavier and potentially more expensive than a Steam Deck |
| ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X | Premium Windows gaming | Windows | Broad compatibility and a more controller-focused Xbox interface | High price and remaining Windows friction |
| ASUS ROG Xbox Ally | Windows and Game Pass at a lower tier | Windows | Current Xbox-oriented handheld experience | Less performance headroom than the Ally X |
| Lenovo Legion Go 2 | Large OLED screens and tabletop play | Windows or specified SteamOS configuration | 8.8-inch OLED, VRR, kickstand and detachable controllers | Large and heavy |
| ASUS ROG Ally X | Discounted previous-generation Windows value | Windows | Strong AMD performance and a large battery | Only compelling when meaningfully cheaper than newer models |
| MSI Claw 8 AI+ or Claw 8 EX AI+ | Intel enthusiasts and battery capacity | Windows | Large-battery, premium design | Price, availability and generation-specific support |
| MSI Claw A8 | Newer MSI enthusiast hardware | Windows | Distinct AMD-based alternative, where available | Exact configuration and retail availability require checking |
| AYANEO 3 | Niche customization | Windows | Unusual configurations and premium enthusiast features | Support and warranty risk compared with major brands |
| Original Lenovo Legion Go | Clearance deals | Windows | Large display and detachable controllers at the right price | Older, heavier and less efficient than newer alternatives |
Do not compare these products by processor name alone. Sustained performance, battery efficiency, cooling, screen resolution, software support, controls and price matter at least as much as peak specifications.
SteamOS versus Windows: make this decision first
Choose SteamOS if you want a console-like Steam machine
SteamOS is designed around a controller-friendly interface, Steam library integration, per-game performance controls and relatively simple suspend-and-resume behavior. It is the better fit if most of your games are on Steam and you want to spend less time managing launchers, desktop windows and updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe trade-off is compatibility. Some anti-cheat systems and Windows-specific launchers do not work properly through Linux and Proton. Non-Steam stores, mods and unusual utilities can require extra setup. Steam’s compatibility labels are useful signals, not guarantees that a game will have perfect text size, frame pacing, controller support or performance.
Choose Windows for maximum store and launcher flexibility
Windows supports Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox PC Game Pass, Battle.net, traditional mod managers and Windows-specific anti-cheat more directly. It is also the more familiar choice if you expect to connect peripherals, use desktop software or treat the handheld as a small PC.
Windows handhelds can involve first-day updates, driver management, launcher logins, display scaling, controller profiles and occasional sleep or resume problems. ASUS and Microsoft’s Xbox-oriented experience on the ROG Xbox Ally models improves controller navigation, but it does not turn Windows into SteamOS. The underlying operating system still has desktop prompts, small touch targets and normal Windows maintenance.
PC Game Pass is a particularly strong reason to choose Windows. Installing PC Game Pass titles locally is different from using Xbox cloud gaming or remote play; the latter do not require the same local game compatibility.
How much performance do you need?
Older or entry-level Z1-class handhelds are suitable for indie games, emulation, older AAA releases and demanding games at reduced settings. Ryzen Z1 Extreme and Ryzen Z2 Extreme-class devices represent the mainstream high-performance tier, but they still require compromises in modern games. Newer premium Intel and AMD designs can be faster, yet their results depend heavily on drivers, cooling and the power limit chosen by the manufacturer.
At roughly 15–20 watts, a handheld cannot maintain the same sustained performance as a gaming laptop with a larger cooling system. Raising the power limit while plugged in can improve frame rates, but it also increases fan noise, heat and battery drain. A handheld that looks fastest in a high-power benchmark may be less useful on a flight or commute.
Judge performance in three separate ways:
- Battery-powered performance: the mode you will use while travelling.
- Plugged-in performance: useful at a desk or with a dock, but less representative of portable play.
- Sustained performance: whether cooling and firmware can maintain the advertised level after a long session.
A high-resolution display does not mean demanding games should be rendered at native resolution. Many owners use 720p, 800p or 1080p output with dynamic resolution, AMD FSR, Intel XeSS or another upscaler.
Battery life is a range, not a specification
Modern AAA battery life varies with the game, brightness, refresh rate, power mode, frame-rate cap, resolution, upscaling, Wi-Fi activity, background processes, operating system and battery health. Manufacturer capacity figures cannot be converted into one universal number of gaming hours.

Use “best battery potential” as a buying category rather than assuming the largest battery always lasts longest. A larger battery can be offset by a more demanding processor, brighter display or higher power profile. MSI’s Claw 8 AI+ family is notable for large battery capacities and efficiency-focused positioning, but its price and stock situation make it a specialist choice rather than an automatic recommendation.
Display, VRR and size
A seven-inch display keeps a handheld relatively manageable. An eight- to 8.8-inch panel makes strategy games, desktop interfaces and small text easier to read, but adds bulk and weight. OLED improves contrast and black levels; it does not automatically deliver longer battery life.
Refresh rate is only useful when the hardware can produce enough frames. Variable refresh rate is often more valuable than an impressive maximum refresh-rate figure because handheld frame rates fluctuate. The Steam Deck OLED remains an important screen and console-style reference point. The Legion Go 2 targets buyers who want an 8.8-inch OLED display, high refresh rate, VRR, a kickstand and detachable controls. See the Steam Deck OLED and Legion Go 2 product pages for exact panel specifications.
Controls, weight and comfort
Comfort is a performance feature. A device that is too heavy or awkward to grip will reduce your actual play time regardless of its benchmark results. Consider grip shape, stick placement, trigger travel, D-pad quality, rear buttons, fan outlet position and how the device feels in bed, on a commute or during a long RPG session.
The Legion Go and Legion Go 2 offer detachable controllers and a kickstand, which are useful for tabletop play and split-controller use. They also add weight, moving parts and a less cohesive handheld feel. A smaller integrated device may be the better choice for travel.
Storage, docks and upgrades
Modern AAA games can fill 512GB quickly, so 1TB is more practical for a primary handheld. A replaceable M.2 SSD can lower long-term storage costs, while a microSD card is convenient for expansion. Internal SSD storage is preferable for games that stream large amounts of data or are sensitive to slower storage.
Before replacing a drive, check whether the device uses a 2230 or 2242 module, back up your data, prepare operating-system recovery media and review the warranty terms. Disassembly can create warranty complications depending on the product and region. Use a reputable, high-speed microSD card and be cautious with counterfeit marketplace listings.
USB-C docking can add a monitor, keyboard, mouse, Ethernet and external storage, but USB-C ports do not all offer identical display output, charging, USB4 or Thunderbolt capabilities. Check the exact port standard and use a dock and charger that provide sufficient power. High-power gaming may require the original charger or a compatible high-wattage USB-C Power Delivery charger.

The 10 best PC gaming handhelds
1. Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS — best SteamOS alternative and larger-screen value

Rank #2
- High-Performance Computing: Harness the power of the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor to effortlessly handle demanding tasks. Enjoy reliable, high-performance computing wherever you go.
- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.

- 8-inch Smoothness Ready: Dive into the ultimate gaming experience with our 8-inch premium 120Hz gaming display, with exceptional color reproduction and smooth action.
The Legion Go S with SteamOS is one of the most important alternatives to Valve’s handheld because it combines a more powerful hardware direction and larger screen with a controller-focused SteamOS experience. Comparison coverage has placed configurations in roughly the $649–$829 range, but the exact Lenovo configuration, stock and current price should be checked before purchase at the official product page.
Why it stands out: It is aimed at the buyer who wants SteamOS without accepting the Steam Deck’s more modest performance ceiling or smaller screen.
Trade-offs: It is larger and heavier than the Steam Deck, may cost substantially more, and SteamOS on third-party hardware may not be as mature or seamless as Valve’s first-party implementation. Distinguish the SteamOS configuration from Windows versions.
Buy it if: You want SteamOS first but care about screen size and extra performance.
Skip it if: You want the lowest-cost, simplest Steam handheld or need Windows-only launchers.
Alternative: The Steam Deck OLED for a more established SteamOS experience; the Legion Go 2 for a larger premium OLED design.

Best for: Game Pass subscribers, multi-store PC gamers and buyers seeking a flagship Windows handheld.
The ROG Xbox Ally X combines broad Windows compatibility with an Xbox-oriented handheld interface intended to make controller navigation easier. Current comparison coverage has indicated a price around $999, but use the official ASUS listing for the current US price and configuration.
Why it stands out: It is a strong fit for players who move among Steam, Epic, GOG, Battle.net and Xbox PC Game Pass, or who need Windows-specific anti-cheat support.
Trade-offs: It is expensive, and the Windows foundation still brings more maintenance and desktop friction than SteamOS. Its performance advantage can depend on higher power modes, which are most practical when plugged in.

3. Valve Steam Deck OLED — best for Steam simplicity
Best for: Steam-first buyers, newcomers, indie players and people who value a console-like experience.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The Steam Deck OLED remains the clearest recommendation for readers who want a handheld built around SteamOS rather than maximum benchmark performance. Its interface, game library integration and per-game controls make it easier to pick up and play than many Windows alternatives. See Valve’s Steam Deck OLED page and compatibility guidance; use the live Steam store listing for current US pricing.
Why it stands out: It is the most straightforward choice for someone whose library is primarily on Steam.
Trade-offs: Newer premium Windows handhelds offer more raw performance. Some anti-cheat systems, non-Steam launchers and mods require workarounds or do not function properly. “Verified” does not promise flawless performance, ideal text size or perfect controller behavior in every title.
Buy it if: You want low-friction Steam gaming and are comfortable checking compatibility before buying games.
Skip it if: PC Game Pass, Windows-only anti-cheat or several non-Steam launchers are central to your library.
Alternative: The Legion Go S with SteamOS if you want a larger screen and more performance.
4. Lenovo Legion Go 2 — best large OLED display and tabletop flexibility
Best for: Buyers who prioritize a large OLED display, tabletop play and detachable controllers.
Rank #3
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The Legion Go 2 is built around an 8.8-inch OLED display with high refresh rate and VRR, plus a kickstand and detachable controllers. It is the most compelling option here for readers who expect to play at a table or use the handheld in a semi-docked configuration. A reported SteamOS configuration starting around $1,199.99 should be treated as a price signal, not a permanent price; confirm the exact US model and stock at Lenovo.

Why it stands out: The larger screen makes small text and strategy interfaces more comfortable, while the kickstand and detachable controls add flexibility.
Trade-offs: It is large and heavy for extended handheld use. Detachable controls add versatility but can feel less integrated. Windows models retain Windows setup friction; do not assume every Legion Go 2 configuration has the same operating system.
Buy it if: Screen size and tabletop use matter more than minimum weight.
Skip it if: You travel frequently or prefer a compact integrated handheld.

5. ASUS ROG Ally X — best older premium value when heavily discounted
Best for: Buyers who want a capable Windows handheld at a clearance or refurbished price.
The ROG Ally X remains a strong previous-generation Windows option, with a large battery and high-performance AMD hardware. It makes sense only when it is substantially cheaper than the newer ROG Xbox Ally X or a comparable current device. Check the exact sale, refurbished condition, warranty and return policy at the official ASUS page and retailer.
Trade-offs: It lacks the newer Xbox-branded interface and may offer less value if its price approaches the current model. Windows remains less controller-friendly than SteamOS.
Buy it if: A reputable seller offers a meaningful discount and you need Windows compatibility.
Skip it if: The price is close to the newer ROG Xbox Ally X.
6. MSI Claw 8 AI+ or Claw 8 EX AI+ — best for battery capacity or Intel enthusiasts
Best for: Buyers specifically interested in Intel handheld hardware, large batteries or premium specifications.
The MSI Claw 8 AI+ family differentiates itself through Intel-based designs, large battery capacity and premium positioning. The exact model matters: do not treat the Claw 8 AI+, Claw 8 EX AI+ and newer Claw A8 as one product. Use MSI’s official product page for the specific configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTrade-offs: Availability can be inconsistent, pricing can be far above mainstream alternatives, and Intel driver support and game performance should be considered per title. One comparison placed a Claw 8 EX AI+ around $1,699 and out of stock; that is better understood as a warning about value and availability than as a normal street price.
Buy it if: You have a specific reason to choose Intel or prioritize battery capacity and have confirmed stock, support and return terms.
Skip it if: You want the safest mainstream value.
Alternative: An AMD-based ROG or Lenovo model with a stronger support ecosystem.
7. MSI Claw A8 — best newer MSI AMD alternative, if available
Best for: Enthusiasts comparing current AMD-powered handhelds and MSI’s large-battery design.
The Claw A8 should be evaluated as a distinct product, not as another name for the earlier Intel Claw. Its suitability depends on the exact processor, memory, screen, storage, launch timing and US availability listed at MSI’s official product page.
Trade-offs: A newer specification does not automatically overcome questions about ergonomics, software quality, support or price. Confirm that the product is actually available for purchase in your region before making it a recommendation.
Buy it if: You want MSI’s design and the confirmed configuration compares favorably with better-established AMD competitors.
Skip it if: Stock, warranty handling or driver support is uncertain.

8. ASUS ROG Xbox Ally — best lower-cost current Windows option
Best for: Game Pass users and buyers who want a current Windows handheld without paying flagship pricing.
The ROG Xbox Ally brings the Xbox-oriented handheld interface and broad Windows compatibility to a lower tier than the Ally X. It is a natural fit for users who want to install PC Game Pass games locally and use multiple PC stores, but its value depends on its current price relative to discounted ROG Ally X and the Steam Deck OLED.
Check the exact processor, memory, storage, charger and US price at the official ASUS product page. Region-specific configurations may differ.
Trade-offs: It has less performance headroom than the Ally X, and the value calculation changes quickly when older models go on sale.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

9. AYANEO 3 — best premium niche and customization option
Best for: Enthusiasts who want unusual configurations, premium materials or modular controls.
AYANEO 3 appeals to buyers who are willing to pay for features outside the mainstream Valve, ASUS and Lenovo ecosystems. The exact model can vary substantially in processor, screen, memory and storage, so consult the official AYANEO page rather than relying on the product family name alone.
Trade-offs: Support, replacement parts, warranty handling and returns may be less convenient than with larger manufacturers. Shipping region and final price also matter.
Buy it if: You understand the support risk and a specific configuration offers something the mainstream alternatives do not.
Skip it if: You prioritize simple local service, easy returns or the safest long-term purchase.
10. Original Lenovo Legion Go — best deal when heavily reduced
Best for: Buyers who want a large display and detachable controllers at a genuinely discounted price.
The original Legion Go can still make sense as clearance inventory, especially for tabletop play. Its value is entirely price-sensitive. Compare the live offer at Lenovo with the newer Legion Go S, ROG Xbox Ally and refurbished ROG Ally X.
Trade-offs: It is older, large and heavy, with potentially weaker efficiency than newer models. Windows setup remains part of the experience.
Buy it if: The discount is substantial enough to compensate for older hardware and the larger chassis suits you.
Skip it if: The price is close to a newer model.

Steam Deck OLED versus Legion Go S with SteamOS
Choose the Steam Deck OLED for Valve’s more established first-party SteamOS experience, lower complexity and smaller form factor. Choose the Legion Go S with SteamOS if you will benefit from a larger screen and additional performance and accept its higher price, weight and potentially less mature third-party SteamOS implementation.
Recommended Free Tools
ROG Xbox Ally versus ROG Xbox Ally X
The Ally X is the premium choice when you want more performance headroom and battery capacity. The standard ROG Xbox Ally is the value-oriented option, but only if its current price is clearly below the X and its performance is sufficient for your games.
ROG Xbox Ally X versus Legion Go 2
The Ally X is the more natural pick for Windows compatibility, Game Pass and a conventional integrated handheld. The Legion Go 2 is better for buyers who value its 8.8-inch OLED screen, kickstand and detachable controllers. Neither is automatically better: one prioritizes software ecosystem flexibility, the other physical versatility and display size.
MSI Claw versus AMD-based alternatives
Choose MSI only when its exact generation, price, stock, drivers and warranty make sense. AMD-based ASUS and Lenovo devices are usually easier to recommend to mainstream buyers because the product families and support ecosystem are more familiar. Do not assume an Intel or newer-numbered model wins every game at every wattage.
New handheld versus discounted previous-generation model
An older Legion Go or ROG Ally X can be excellent value, but a small discount is not enough. Check battery health, joystick drift, screen damage, USB-C port wear, fan noise, charger, case, dead pixels, SSD history, warranty transferability and the seller’s return policy. Refurbished pricing should be compared with the total cost and condition, not just the headline number.
