New to VALORANT? Build these ten habits before chasing advanced tactics: learn your Agent’s role, make each purchase with the round in mind, and treat every fight as part of the Spike objective. Riot’s Beginner’s Guide is the basis for these fundamentals; current maps, modes, and other game details can change, so check the in-game client for what is available now.
1. Learn one Agent’s job and abilities
VALORANT groups Agents into four roles, each with a different team job. Start by learning one Agent well enough to understand what their abilities do and when they can help the team. Riot’s example is a Controller using smoke to help the team execute a plan. You do not need to memorize the whole roster before you can contribute; focus on how your Agent’s tools support the next team action. Riot’s Beginner’s Guide explains the roles and team-oriented use of abilities.

2. Buy for the round, not by habit
Each round begins with a buy phase. Choose weapons and abilities with your available credits, Agent, comfort level, and team strategy in mind. There is no universal buy order that suits every round: a purchase that works when your team can afford a coordinated plan may not make sense when credits are limited. Check what you can afford and coordinate with teammates when possible rather than buying automatically.

Eliminating opponents can create an opening, but it is not the round’s objective. Attackers need to plant and detonate the Spike; defenders need to stop the plant or, once it is planted, defuse it. Before taking a fight or rotating, consider whether it helps your side reach or protect that objective. Riot’s guide outlines the attacker and defender goals in its Beginner’s Guide.

4. Learn routes and check angles
Maps reward players who know where opponents can approach from and which corners need checking. As you play, learn the routes between areas, common entry points, and the angles you expose when moving. Use that knowledge to choose a safer approach and to anticipate where a fight may begin. Map pools can change; check the current client rather than relying on a fixed list of maps. Riot’s Patch 13.06 is one place to follow current game updates.
5. Stop moving before you shoot
Riot’s direct beginner advice is: “When you see an enemy, stay calm. Stop moving before shooting to be more accurate.” If you spot an opponent, resist the urge to fire while still running. Pause, aim, and then shoot; this gives you a more deliberate engagement than spraying while moving. Riot’s Beginner’s Guide recommends stopping before firing.

6. Decide when to run and when to walk
Sound can give opponents information about your approach. Ask yourself: “Do I want the enemies to hear me run up or should I walk?” Run when speed matters more than staying quiet; walk when keeping your approach less audible supports the next goal. Make the choice deliberately rather than moving at the same pace in every situation, as Riot advises in its Beginner’s Guide.

7. Use an ability for a specific purpose
Before using a skill, ask: “Can I use an ability to help me achieve my next goal?” That goal might be helping your team enter an area, making a position harder to hold, or supporting a teammate. If you cannot connect the ability to a useful next action, hold it until you can. The point is to make utility part of a plan, not to spend it automatically. Riot’s guide to VALORANT emphasizes using abilities to help achieve your goal.

8. Share useful information—even without voice chat
Tell teammates where you have seen enemies and when you can support them. Clear, timely information helps the team make decisions together. Voice chat is optional: Riot identifies location pings and Agent voice lines as alternatives for communicating. Use whichever method is comfortable and available, and keep the information relevant to what teammates can act on. See Riot’s Beginner’s Guide for its communication suggestions.
9. Adjust settings to suit yourself
Set controls and other settings around how you want to play. There is no universal sensitivity or crosshair established by Riot’s beginner advice, so do not assume another player’s setup is automatically right for you. Make adjustments when a control feels awkward, then give yourself time to get used to the change instead of frequently switching settings mid-session. Riot’s Beginner’s Guide recommends tuning settings to your preferences.

10. Practice with room to learn, then review feedback
Choose a practice setting that fits what you want to work on, from low-pressure matches to focused drills. Riot recommends Unrated and Swiftplay for new players. The Range offers a quieter place to work on fundamentals, and PC players can set its bot count to 10, 5, or 1; five is the default, according to Patch 13.05. If you are queued in a supported matchmaking flow, Patch 13.06 says you may be able to enter the Range while you wait; availability depends on expected queue time and mode.
Patch 13.06 also introduced Performance Score, a 0–500 in-game measure available in Competitive, Unrated, Swiftplay, and Premier. The end-of-game details show factors that affected the score. Treat it as one source of feedback, not a complete measure of skill: use it to reflect on a match, alongside what you noticed about your decisions and team play. Riot’s Patch 13.06 notes describe the score and its availability.
