No single service replaces Steam for every PC gamer. Choose GOG for DRM-free ownership and offline installers, Epic Games Store for free games and promotions, PC Game Pass for subscription value, and itch.io for independent discovery. Humble, Fanatical, and Green Man Gaming are useful shopping destinations, while EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, and Heroic solve narrower publisher or library-management needs.
What counts as a Steam alternative?
“Steam alternative” can mean several different things:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Competing storefront: You buy and manage games through a separate store, such as Epic or GOG.
- Subscription service: You pay for catalog access, as with PC Game Pass, rather than permanently purchasing most games.
- Publisher launcher: A client focused on one company’s games, such as EA app, Ubisoft Connect, or Battle.net.
- Authorized retailer: A shop such as Humble, Fanatical, or Green Man Gaming that may sell a key redeemable on Steam or another platform.
- Library manager: Software such as Heroic or Playnite that organizes existing libraries without transferring ownership.
- Cloud-gaming service: A way to stream games rather than install them locally. This is a different category and is not included in this shortlist.
That distinction matters. Buying from Fanatical may still leave the game in your Steam library. Installing Heroic does not give you a new license. Game Pass provides access while your subscription and the title’s catalog availability continue. These services complement Steam in different ways rather than replacing it equally.
Quick comparison
| Platform | Type | Best for | Ownership or access | Platform notes | Another launcher? | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Epic Games Store | Storefront | Free games, coupons, exclusives | Store account license | Primarily Windows; Linux and Steam Deck may need compatibility tools | Sometimes | Weaker community and mod ecosystem than Steam |
| GOG | Storefront | DRM-free games and preservation | Supported titles include standalone installers | Windows, with macOS/Linux support varying by title | Galaxy is optional for supported offline games | Smaller current-release catalog |
| PC Game Pass | Subscription | Access to many games for one monthly fee | Subscription access, not permanent ownership | Windows 10/11 22H2 or newer and Xbox app required | Some games use additional services | Games can leave the catalog |
| itch.io | Indie marketplace | Experimental games and creator-direct purchases | Developer-set downloads or account access | Many Windows, macOS, and Linux downloads | Optional itch.io app | Uneven polish and support |
| Humble | Store and bundle service | Bundles, discounts, charity | Often a third-party key | Depends on activation platform | Usually yes | Many purchases still depend on Steam |
| Fanatical | Authorized retailer | Curated bundles and discounts | Usually a key for another platform | Check region and activation label | Usually yes | Not a unified launcher |
| Green Man Gaming | Authorized retailer | Discounted PC keys | Product-specific key or entitlement | Check region and activation platform | Usually yes | Not an independent ecosystem |
| EA app | Publisher launcher | EA games | EA account entitlement | Windows-focused; game-specific requirements apply | Sometimes | Narrow catalog |
| Ubisoft Connect | Publisher launcher | Ubisoft games and Ubisoft+ | Ubisoft account entitlement | Game-specific client and account requirements | Often | Publisher dependency |
| Battle.net | Publisher launcher | Blizzard games | Battle.net account entitlement | Primarily Blizzard’s ecosystem | No separate general storefront required | Narrow catalog |
| Heroic Games Launcher | Library manager | Linux, Steam Deck, Epic and GOG libraries | Uses licenses owned elsewhere | Especially relevant to Linux and SteamOS | Cannot eliminate every original-client requirement | Does not sell games |
1. Epic Games Store: best overall alternative for promotions
Best for: Free games, coupons, major releases, regional pricing, and selected exclusives.
#1 Best Overall
- International (UK) Version
- 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)

- 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
The Epic Games Store is the closest general-purpose competitor to Steam for many Windows users. Its recurring free-game program and frequent sales make it particularly attractive to price-conscious players. Visit the official Epic free-games page for the current offer rather than relying on a fixed giveaway schedule.
- Broad mainstream catalog
- Frequent promotions and title-specific discounts
- Free-game claims that remain associated with your Epic account under the store’s terms
- Regional pricing and support for achievements on eligible newer releases
- Cross-play where the developer implements it
Epic is not a feature-for-feature Steam replacement. Community infrastructure, forums, Workshop-style mod distribution, and some library-management features are less mature or less universal. A game may also require another account or publisher client. Epic’s developer information describes regional pricing, achievements, and cross-play options, but those capabilities remain game-specific. See the Epic distribution documentation.
Verdict: Start here if your priority is free games, coupons, or releases unavailable on Steam. Do not choose it solely expecting Steam’s community ecosystem.
2. GOG: best for DRM-free ownership and preservation
Best for: Classic PC games, single-player titles, offline installers, and buyers who want less dependence on a client.
GOG is the strongest alternative for preservation-minded players. Supported games are marketed without traditional DRM and commonly include standalone installers, so you can back up the files and reinstall without treating the storefront client as the center of ownership. The optional GOG Galaxy client adds library and social features but is not required for every supported offline game.
“DRM-free” is not a guarantee that every feature works forever without the internet. Multiplayer may require an account, servers, or publisher technology; some titles may include third-party services. Check the individual product page and system requirements.
- Excellent for older games and preservation
- Useful standalone installers for supported titles
- Strong single-player and classic catalog
- No universal Steam Workshop equivalent
- Native Linux support varies by game
GOG’s trade-off is selection: some major new releases are absent, delayed, or available only in particular editions. Its user agreement and refund policy should be checked before purchase.
Verdict: Choose GOG when long-term reinstallability and DRM-free distribution matter more than having every new AAA release.
3. PC Game Pass and the Xbox app: best subscription value
Best for: Trying many games, playing eligible Microsoft and Bethesda releases, and accessing a rotating catalog for one monthly fee.
PC Game Pass is an access model, not a permanent library. The U.S. purchase page showed $13.99 per month after a promotional period during the research window; prices, introductory offers, plans, catalogs, and benefits vary by country and can change. The service requires Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher and the Xbox app.
- Day-one access for eligible releases
- Large rotating PC catalog
- EA Play included with the researched plan
- Discounts on selected games and add-ons
- Useful for sampling games before buying
Microsoft states that access ends when the subscription expires or when a game leaves the catalog. The live Game Pass library is the authority for current availability. Installation permissions, protected files, and third-party launcher dependencies can also make some games less flexible than ordinary store purchases.
Recommended Free Tools
Verdict: PC Game Pass is the best choice for access-per-dollar, but a poor fit if you want to own a DRM-free installer or keep every game permanently.

4. itch.io: best for indie and experimental games
Best for: Game jams, prototypes, freeware, visual novels, tools, experimental projects, and direct support for independent creators.
itch.io offers a different kind of discovery from a mainstream storefront. Developers set their own prices, and the marketplace includes free, pay-what-you-want, open-source, and unusual projects that may never appear on larger stores. Many creators offer Windows, macOS, and Linux downloads. The optional itch.io app can help manage downloads, but the experience is not standardized across every project.
Quality, update frequency, documentation, refund handling, multiplayer support, cloud saves, and controller support vary widely. Read the project page carefully and treat each creator’s support information as part of the purchase decision.

5. Humble Store and Humble Bundles: best for bundles and charity
Best for: Bundles, discounts, and purchases that include a charitable component.
Humble Store and Humble Bundles are shopping destinations rather than a guaranteed independent game ecosystem. Many purchases provide keys for Steam, Epic, or another platform; some products include DRM-free downloads. Humble Choice adds a membership model with changing terms and benefits.
Before checkout, identify the redemption destination, included editions, DLC, and whether the bundle must be redeemed or refunded as a unit. A Humble purchase may be a great deal while still leaving you dependent on Steam.

6. Fanatical: best for curated discounted keys
Best for: Themed bundles and discounts on selected PC games.
Fanatical is an authorized third-party retailer, not a replacement launcher. Its bundles and product pages can reduce the cost of a game, but the resulting key may activate on Steam, Epic, Ubisoft Connect, or another service. Check the activation-platform label, region, edition, and refund terms before paying.
Verdict: A strong price-comparison stop, but not an independent library or community platform.

Green Man Gaming sells product-specific PC entitlements and keys. The important question is where the game activates. A discounted purchase may still become a Steam license, and availability can vary by country, edition, and inventory. Verify whether the listing is a key, direct download, or account-bound entitlement.
Verdict: Useful for checking the final price of a specific game, but do not describe it as a Steam replacement in the same sense as GOG or Epic.
8. EA app: best for EA’s catalog
Best for: The Sims, Battlefield, Mass Effect, EA Sports, and other EA properties.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe EA app is EA’s publisher client and storefront. It manages EA accounts, patches, DLC, and the company’s PC catalog. EA Play adds subscription access where available.
Some EA games purchased through Steam or Epic still require EA account linking or the EA app. That requirement depends on the individual title and purchase route, so check the product page before assuming that buying elsewhere removes the EA client.
Verdict: Necessary or useful for EA-focused players, but too narrow to replace Steam generally. EA’s returns and cancellation information should be checked for the current rules.
9. Ubisoft Connect: best for Ubisoft games
Best for: Ubisoft’s catalog, Ubisoft+ access, and publisher-specific account features.
Ubisoft Connect provides access to Ubisoft games, rewards, updates, and account services. Some Ubisoft products require the client even when purchased through another store. Ubisoft’s terms of use explain that client requirements can apply to installation or launching for some products.
Cross-store ownership, DLC, account linking, and offline behavior can be confusing. Confirm the exact client and account requirements for the game you intend to buy.
Verdict: Worth installing if you play Ubisoft games; otherwise it offers little reason to replace a general-purpose storefront.
10. Battle.net: best for Blizzard games
Best for: Blizzard’s major PC franchises and other titles distributed through the client.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Battle.net combines Blizzard game purchases, patching, friends, chat, and account services. It is the natural destination for games that are not distributed through Steam.
Rank #4
- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
Its catalog is narrow compared with a general storefront, and availability can vary by title. You will retain the Battle.net account and launcher dependency for the games that live there.
Verdict: Essential for Blizzard players, not a broad Steam replacement.
11. Heroic Games Launcher: best for Linux, Steam Deck, and multi-library management
Best for: Organizing supported Epic and GOG libraries on Linux and Steam Deck.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Heroic Games Launcher is free, open-source library-management software. It can access supported libraries you already own and is particularly relevant to Linux and SteamOS users who want one interface instead of repeatedly opening multiple official storefronts.
Heroic does not sell games, transfer licenses, crack DRM, or guarantee that every title works. Anti-cheat, third-party authentication, proprietary launchers, compatibility layers, and game-specific bugs can still prevent installation or play. Treat compatibility as a per-game question.
Verdict: The strongest launcher alternative for many Linux and Steam Deck users, but a complement to storefronts rather than a store itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Steam alternative should you choose?
For DRM-free games
Choose GOG. Check each title’s product page because online services, multiplayer, and third-party accounts can still impose requirements.
For free games
Choose Epic Games Store for recurring mainstream promotions. Choose itch.io for the widest variety of free, experimental, freeware, and developer-uploaded projects. Game Pass is subscription access, not a permanent free claim.
For subscription gaming
Choose PC Game Pass if you use Windows and want a rotating catalog. Buy games separately if losing access when a subscription ends or a title leaves the catalog is unacceptable.
For indie discovery
Choose itch.io. Expect more variation in polish, support, updates, cloud saves, and multiplayer than on a major storefront.
For bundles and charity
Choose Humble, but confirm whether each item is a Steam, Epic, or other-platform key.

Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
For publisher-specific games
Use EA app, Ubisoft Connect, or Battle.net when the game belongs to that publisher’s ecosystem. Installing one of these clients does not provide a broad alternative catalog.
For Linux and Steam Deck
Try Heroic for supported Epic and GOG libraries, then verify the individual game’s compatibility, anti-cheat, controller support, and launcher requirements. GOG’s offline installers can be valuable, but native Linux support varies by title.
Can you move your Steam library?
Usually, no. Purchases, achievements, playtime, inventory, Workshop subscriptions, community activity, and many saves are tied to the original platform. Some games support cross-play, cross-save, or a shared publisher account, but those are game-specific features.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

They do not transfer ownership, turn a Steam license into a GOG license, or remove the original launcher requirement. A realistic plan is to use alternatives alongside Steam rather than expect a complete migration.
What to check before buying
- Ownership model: Is this a perpetual purchase, a DRM-free installer, an account entitlement, a subscription license, or a key for another store?
- Activation destination: Confirm where the game will live after checkout.
- Operating system: Check Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck compatibility separately.
- Launcher requirements: Look for publisher accounts, secondary clients, anti-cheat, or online authentication.
- Multiplayer: Verify cross-play, backend, friends lists, and operating-system support for the specific game.
- Cloud saves: Store-level cloud support is not universal; developers and platforms may implement it differently.
- Mods: Steam Workshop content will not automatically be available elsewhere. Manual installation and game-specific mod tools may be required.
- Refunds: Check the current policy, usage limits, preorder rules, bundle treatment, DLC exclusions, and regional consumer protections. Epic notes that virtual currency and consumables may be non-refundable; see its refund policy.
- Final cost: Compare taxes, regional pricing, coupons, DLC, bundle contents, and subscription duration—not just the advertised discount.
Can you delete Steam?
You can use Epic, GOG, itch.io, Game Pass, and publisher clients for many new purchases. You cannot migrate most existing Steam licenses, and some games will continue to require Steam because of ownership, multiplayer infrastructure, Workshop content, or publisher decisions. A multi-launcher setup is usually more practical than a total replacement.
Steam also remains unusually strong in user reviews, forums, guides, Workshop, community hubs, controller support, remote-play features, and profile tools. The best alternative depends on which one of those functions you actually want to replace.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the closest overall alternative to Steam?
Epic Games Store is the closest general-purpose competitor for many Windows users because of its broad catalog, free-game promotions, and sales. It does not reproduce every Steam community, Workshop, or library feature.

GOG’s supported distribution model is DRM-free and commonly includes standalone installers, but individual games may still require online accounts, servers, multiplayer services, or third-party technology. Check the specific product page.
Do Humble, Fanatical, and Green Man Gaming replace Steam?
Usually not. They are retailers, and many purchases produce keys that activate on Steam, Epic, Ubisoft Connect, or another platform.
Does PC Game Pass mean you own the games?
No. Most catalog games are available only while your subscription is active and while each title remains in the catalog.
Is Heroic Games Launcher a game store?
No. Heroic is a free, open-source library launcher that can manage supported Epic and GOG libraries, especially on Linux and Steam Deck.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use GOG for DRM-free ownership, Epic for free games and promotions, PC Game Pass for subscription access, itch.io for indie discovery, Humble for bundles, Fanatical or Green Man Gaming for authorized discounts, publisher launchers for publisher-specific catalogs, and Heroic for multi-library management on Linux or Steam Deck. Most players will get the best result by using these services alongside Steam rather than trying to replace it entirely.
