But its biggest leap over the RTX 4090 comes from DLSS 4’s AI reconstruction and RTX 50-series-exclusive Multi Frame Generation—not from a universal doubling of native rendering performance. It is an exceptional flagship for buyers who can afford the entire supporting system, but excessive for ordinary 1080p or 1440p gaming.
What is the RTX 5090?
Nvidia’s RTX 5090 is the flagship desktop GPU in its Blackwell-based GeForce RTX 50 Series, positioned above the RTX 5080 and RTX 4090. It launched on January 30, 2025, with a $1,999 MSRP—$400 more than the RTX 4090’s launch price. That is a historical launch price, not a guaranteed current retail price in 2026; Nvidia’s marketplace is dynamic, so verify the live listing before buying.

Its natural target is a 4K or higher-resolution display, particularly one with a high refresh rate. At 1080p, and sometimes at 1440p, a fast CPU can become the limiting factor before the GPU reaches its potential. A 5090 is therefore difficult to justify for a conventional 1080p gaming system or an esports PC whose main goal is high frame rates at low settings.

How fast is it without DLSS?
The answer depends on what “performance” means. Native rasterization, ray tracing, path tracing, DLSS Super Resolution and generated frames measure different things and should not be collapsed into one average FPS number.
Native rasterization
In ordinary rasterized games, the RTX 5090 is generally faster than the RTX 4090, but the uplift is meaningful rather than universally transformative. It has 33% more Streaming Multiprocessors, 33% more VRAM and a reported 78% increase in memory bandwidth over the RTX 4090. Those resources help most at high resolutions and in workloads that can use the additional bandwidth, but game engines vary considerably.
Do not interpret Nvidia’s “up to 2×” claims as a general native-rasterization result. Nvidia’s comparisons use selected games, settings and combinations of DLSS and frame-generation modes. Independent testing likewise finds that the 5090 is the fastest GPU in most workloads while showing that the advantage changes by game and resolution. See Tom’s Hardware’s RTX 5090 review for test-suite context.
Ray tracing and path tracing
The 5090’s case is stronger when ray tracing or path tracing is enabled. Its fourth-generation RT cores, fifth-generation Tensor cores and Blackwell architecture provide substantial headroom for demanding lighting effects. At 4K, the card is particularly well suited to games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 when their most demanding ray-traced or path-traced modes are used.
Even here, report the rendering method precisely. “4K native,” “4K DLSS Quality,” and “4K DLSS Performance with Multi Frame Generation” are not interchangeable results. A review chart should identify the resolution, preset, ray-tracing setting, upscaling mode, frame-generation mode, CPU, driver and whether the FPS is rendered or generated.
DLSS 4 explained
DLSS 4 is a group of technologies rather than a single frame-rate switch:
Rank #2
- [3352 AI TOPS, 5th Gen Tensor Cores, AI Content Creation] Built for AI-assisted photo and video workflows including upscaling, denoise, background removal, masking, and generative AI creation for faster creator productivity.
- [32GB GDDR7 VRAM, Local LLM Inference, Larger Models] Run local LLM inference and on-device AI tools with massive VRAM headroom for larger models, longer context, and heavier multitasking across AI and creator apps.
- [28 Gbps, 512-bit, 21760 CUDA Cores] High-throughput next-gen memory and core resources for demanding creator projects, complex timelines, large assets, and GPU-accelerated ML experimentation and inference pipelines.
- [Quad-Fan Force, Vapor Chamber, Phase-Change Thermal Pad] Designed for sustained performance under heavy loads with quad-fan cooling, a patented vapor chamber, and a phase-change GPU thermal pad to help lower temps and reduce hotspots.
- [DP 2.1b x3, HDMI 2.1b x2, Bundle GPU Holder] Multi-display ready with up to 4 displays and up to 7680 x 4320 max digital resolution, plus an included GPU Holder to help reduce GPU sag and improve long-term build stability.
- DLSS Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and uses AI to reconstruct a higher-resolution image.
- The transformer model is a newer neural architecture for supported DLSS features. Nvidia and coverage such as PCWorld’s RTX 5090 review describe the model as an evolution beyond the older convolutional approach. The transformer model was introduced across supported RTX generations; it is not the same thing as Multi Frame Generation.
- Ray Reconstruction uses AI to improve ray-tracing denoising and reconstruction.
- Frame Generation creates an additional frame between conventionally rendered frames.
- Multi Frame Generation—the RTX 50-series launch feature—can create multiple frames between traditionally rendered frames using the GPU’s AI hardware and motion information.
- Reflex is designed to reduce system latency and keep the rendered pipeline responsive when frame generation is enabled.
The basic pipeline is: the game renders a lower-resolution frame, DLSS reconstructs it, the game renders conventional frames, AI analyzes motion and generates intermediate frames, and the display presents the combined sequence. The result can look dramatically smoother without requiring every displayed frame to be conventionally rendered.
Why DLSS 4 can feel like a game changer
In a supported 4K game with demanding ray tracing or path tracing, a strong base frame rate, DLSS Super Resolution and Reflex, Multi Frame Generation can turn an otherwise difficult experience into a high-refresh-rate one. Nvidia announced more than 75 games and applications for DLSS 4 support at launch, including updates for Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077 and Hogwarts Legacy.
This is the RTX 5090’s most convincing generational story. The raw hardware is faster, but DLSS 4 allows the card to present a much higher final display rate in the games that support it.
Rendered FPS is not displayed FPS
A frame-rate overlay may show 200 or 240 FPS while the game is conventionally rendering far fewer frames. If a game produces a 60-FPS base and Multi Frame Generation displays 240 FPS, the extra frames can improve visual fluidity, but they do not mean the game is simulating input and responding like a natively rendered 240-FPS game. Tom’s Hardware makes this distinction in its discussion of latency and generated frames.

The best experience comes when the base rate is already reasonably high. Multi Frame Generation is a display-smoothness technology, not a replacement for CPU performance, game simulation or a responsive conventional rendering pipeline.
DLSS 4 weaknesses
Latency
Generated frames do not contain the same fresh input information as conventionally rendered frames. Reflex helps manage the queue and latency, but it cannot make a low base frame rate equivalent to a high native one. For competitive shooters, where immediate input response matters more than visual smoothness, native rendering or conventional DLSS at a high base rate may be preferable.
Artifacts and pacing
Depending on the game and implementation, generated frames can produce:
Rank #3
- Equipped with GeForce RTX 5090 chipset
- Integrated with 32GB of 512-bit GDDR7 memory interface
- WATERFORCE All-in-One Cooling System
- RGB Lighting
- Protective metal back plate
- HUD or UI errors;
- ghosting and flickering fine detail;
- incorrect motion-vector reconstruction;
- duplicated objects;
- distorted particles, foliage or transparencies; and
- uneven frame pacing despite an impressive average FPS.
Native game integration is preferable to a driver-level override. Nvidia App overrides can extend support, but they are not guaranteed to behave correctly in every title. Keep drivers current through Nvidia’s driver download page, and judge each game visually rather than assuming all implementations are equal.
DLSS mode matters
At 4K, Quality is generally the best starting point. Balanced can make sense when ray tracing is especially demanding. Performance may be useful in extreme 4K workloads, but it should be evaluated game by game. Ultra Performance is not a universal 4K recommendation, even on a 5090.
Nvidia’s current product messaging refers to DLSS 4.5, including Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and a second-generation transformer model. That is a later software evolution and should not be silently treated as the same feature set tested in the original January 2025 launch reviews. Later testing also found that newer reconstruction modes can consume more power: PC Gamer measured nearly 50W more in one Cyberpunk 2077 Ultra Performance comparison between DLSS 4.5 and DLSS 4. Read that result as a workload-specific measurement, not a universal power increase.
Power, cooling and case requirements
The RTX 5090 is a demanding component, not merely a fast one. Nvidia lists 575W total graphics power and a 1,000W recommended system power figure. Its installation guidance also mentions an 850W minimum in a particular configuration, so neither number should be presented as a universal rule. The suitable PSU depends on the CPU, the rest of the system, transient behavior and PSU quality.
For a new build, prefer a high-quality ATX 3.1/PCIe 5.1 power supply with a native 600W GPU cable. If using an adapter with multiple PCIe 8-pin cables, seat it fully and avoid sharp bends near the connector. Check the case’s cable-clearance specification, not just its nominal GPU-length limit. Add-in-board cards may be longer, wider or thicker than the approximately 304mm by 137mm Founders Edition.
Recommended Free Tools
Nvidia lists a maximum GPU temperature of up to 90°C in its specifications. Tom’s Hardware’s PCAT v2 testing found that the Founders Edition did not constantly operate at the 575W limit, although some workloads approached or slightly exceeded the rating. Sustained power affects case airflow, fan noise, room heat and potentially electricity costs. A large, airflow-focused case and a strong CPU cooler are part of the purchase—not optional afterthoughts.
Creator and local AI workloads
The 32GB of GDDR7 is valuable for high-resolution video, 3D scenes, machine-learning workflows and other applications that run into VRAM limits. CUDA and Tensor acceleration support Nvidia’s creator ecosystem, while fifth-generation Tensor cores add FP4 capability. Three ninth-generation NVENC encoders, two sixth-generation NVDEC decoders, AV1 support and 4:2:2 video support are useful for video production and streaming.
Rank #4
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Powered by GeForce RTX 5080
- Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
- PCIe 5.0
- WINDFORCE cooling system
Relevant applications include DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, Blender, ComfyUI and other local AI tools. Nvidia’s Studio ecosystem and Broadcast software can also exploit RTX hardware for creator and communication features.
However, 32GB is not a guarantee that every AI model will fit. Model quantization, context length, batch size, framework support and whether the application can offload work to system RAM all matter. The 5090 is a powerful consumer accelerator, not a substitute for a workstation card with unlimited memory.
Is the RTX 5090 worth $1,999?
It can be, but only for a narrow audience. The real cost includes the GPU, a suitable PSU, a case with airflow and clearance, a high-end CPU, cooling and—if you want to see its advantage—a 4K high-refresh display. Spending the entire budget on the GPU while compromising those parts can make the system less satisfying.
Buy it if:
- you want the fastest single-GPU 4K gaming experience available;
- you prioritize ray tracing or path tracing;
- you have, or plan to buy, a high-refresh 4K or higher-resolution display;
- your work benefits from 32GB VRAM, CUDA, Tensor, FP4, NVENC or NVDEC;
- you accept that the largest gaming gains depend on DLSS-supported titles; and
- you can afford the complete platform without weakening the rest of the build.
Skip it if:
- you mainly play at 1080p or ordinary 1440p;
- your games are CPU-limited;
- you mostly play competitive games where generated frames offer limited practical benefit;
- you want the best price-to-performance ratio;
- you already own an RTX 4090 and are satisfied with native 4K performance; or
- buying it would force compromises in your monitor, CPU, storage, PSU or case.
RTX 4090 owners: should you upgrade?
The upgrade case is strongest for path tracing, DLSS 4-supported games, 32GB VRAM requirements and AI or creator workloads. It is much weaker for ordinary native rasterized games that already run well at 4K on the RTX 4090. The 5090 is faster, but the difference is not automatically worth replacing a still-powerful 4090 unless you specifically value Blackwell’s new capabilities.
Alternatives
GeForce RTX 5080
The RTX 5080 provides access to the broader Blackwell and DLSS 4/4.5 ecosystem at a lower tier of performance. It is the more rational choice for many 4K buyers who want high-end ray tracing without paying flagship premiums. It is less suitable if you specifically need 32GB VRAM or maximum path-tracing performance. See the RTX 50 Series page for the product family.
GeForce RTX 4090
The RTX 4090 remains extremely fast and offers 24GB of VRAM, but it lacks the RTX 50-series-exclusive Multi Frame Generation feature. It can make sense as a discounted or existing card, particularly for native rendering, but buyers seeking Nvidia’s newest generated-frame features should choose the 5090 or another supported RTX 50-series model. Nvidia’s reference information is on the RTX 4090 page.

Final verdict
The RTX 5090 is a superb but uncompromising flagship. Its raw Blackwell hardware makes it the fastest consumer GeForce GPU, and its 32GB of VRAM gives it unusual headroom for 4K gaming, creation and local AI. Yet DLSS 4 is what makes it feel genuinely next-generation in supported games.
Buy it for uncompromising 4K ray-traced or path-traced performance, substantial VRAM and Nvidia’s software ecosystem. Do not buy it because a Multi Frame Generation overlay promises a universal 200-FPS experience. The meaningful number is the base rendered frame rate, followed by latency, frame pacing and image quality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RTX 5090 twice as fast as the RTX 4090?
Not as a general native-rendering rule. It is substantially faster in many workloads, but Nvidia’s up-to-2× claims depend on selected games, ray-tracing settings, DLSS and frame-generation modes.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does Multi Frame Generation make a 60-FPS game feel like native 240 FPS?
No. It can make motion appear smoother at a higher displayed frame rate, but input responsiveness remains tied more closely to the lower conventionally rendered base rate. Reflex helps but does not eliminate that distinction.
What PSU does an RTX 5090 need?
Nvidia lists 1,000W recommended system power and also describes an 850W minimum in a particular configuration. Choose a high-quality ATX 3.1/PCIe 5.1 PSU with a native 600W GPU cable, considering the CPU and complete system.
Should RTX 4090 owners upgrade?
Upgrade if you specifically want path-tracing gains, DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, 32GB VRAM or stronger AI and creator performance. The case is weaker if your 4090 already delivers the native 4K performance you want.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the RTX 5090 when maximum 4K ray-tracing performance, 32GB VRAM and Nvidia’s AI features matter more than value, power use or platform cost. For everyone else—including many RTX 4090 owners—the RTX 5080 or an existing high-end card is likely the more sensible choice.
