Sony says it is investing in the next generation of PlayStation, but it has not announced a PS6 console, its specifications, price or release date. That leaves plenty of room for speculation—and three PS6 rumours stand out because they could make the next generation more portable, more accessible or kinder to players’ existing game libraries. None is confirmed by Sony.
What Sony has actually confirmed about the next PlayStation
In a June 5, 2026 investor-meeting summary, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Hideaki Nishino said the company’s investment in PlayStation’s future “includes the next generation of the platform and related content.” Sony also discussed making its ecosystem accessible to more players and expanding how people play beyond the living room. The statement does not confirm a PS6 product or any of the devices described below. Sony’s investor-meeting summary
Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said in May 2026 that the company had not decided the timing or price of its new console and would need to monitor component and memory conditions. Dates such as 2027, 2028 or 2029 should therefore be treated as estimates or speculation, not launch announcements. Sony has not published PS6 specifications, product images or benchmark results. Stuff’s PS6 coverage
1. A PlayStation handheld that runs games locally
The most enticing handheld rumour is not simply a smaller screen for streaming. Reporting describes a possible device designed to run PS5 games natively, meaning the game would run on the handheld rather than being streamed from another PlayStation. That could make playing away from a television feel more like using a portable console. Stuff’s reporting on the handheld rumour

- What's Included: Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Version; Wireless controller; USB cable, HDMI cable, AC power cord. Nogtox PVT HDMI_cable
That would be a different proposition from PlayStation Portal, which streams games and is not the rumoured native handheld. Sony’s comments about broadening play styles beyond the living room fit the general idea of more flexible ways to play, but they do not confirm this particular device. The report describes the handheld project as early-stage and potentially cancellable; its specifications, price, release timing and relationship to a PS6 launch remain unknown.
2. A three-device family with a cheaper entry point
A report by TechRadar, attributing its information to leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead, claims Sony could release three devices: a main PS6, a lower-cost “PS6 S” or lite model, and a handheld. The report gives a possible total price span of $350–$1,000. These names and prices are leaker-attributed estimates—not Sony’s product plans or pricing. TechRadar’s April 14, 2026 report

If that lineup existed, players might be able to choose among higher performance, a lower-cost entry point and portability. That is the appeal of the rumour, not a benefit Sony has promised. Until Sony announces actual models and prices, there is no sound basis for comparing their performance or value.
Sony’s March 2026 figures give context for the scale of its existing audience: more than 93 million PS5 units installed and 125 million monthly active user accounts. Those figures describe the PlayStation business, not evidence that Sony will release multiple PS6 models. Sony’s investor-meeting materials

3. Backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games
A separate report attributes claims of PS4 and PS5 backward compatibility to alleged AMD documents described by a leaker, and says the claimed support could include the rumoured handheld. Sony has not confirmed PS6 compatibility, so players should treat this as a possibility—not a feature to count on. Stuff’s coverage of the compatibility rumour
For players with large libraries, keeping access to older games could make a generational change less disruptive. Sony reported more than 93 million PS5 units installed as of March 2026, but that installed-base figure does not establish what the next console will play. Compatibility with physical discs is a separate, unanswered question: Sony has not announced a PS6 disc drive or how existing disc libraries would work.

What to watch for before treating any rumour as a buying plan
- Play style: Whether Sony announces a living-room console, a portable device that runs games locally, or both.
- Models and price: Official model names, specifications and prices—not the leaker-estimated $350–$1,000 span.
- Game libraries: Explicit confirmation of PS4 and PS5 support, including separate details for digital games and physical discs.
- Timing: A launch window announced by Sony rather than a predicted year.
One confirmed policy is relevant to physical media, but it does not settle the PS6 drive question: Sony announced that production of physical discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end starting in January 2028. That statement concerns production of new game discs; it does not say whether PS6 hardware will include a drive or how existing physical libraries will be supported.
