There is no official BioWare successor, but Baldur’s Gate 3 is the closest starting point for players who want a party, relationships and consequential decisions rooted in BioWare’s original Baldur’s Gate lineage. BioWare announced on October 21, 2026, that the studio is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending; the games below are creative alternatives, not evidence of an ownership or personnel handoff. (BioWare’s announcement; official Baldur’s Gate 3 page)

The strongest alternative depends on which part of BioWare’s appeal matters most to you: companion-focused fantasy, tactical party combat, science-fiction settings, or a first-person fantasy world. These seven released RPGs cover those different tastes; none should be treated as a direct replacement for every BioWare series.

These are editorial matches based on each studio’s descriptions, not a measured ranking of quality. Game availability, platform support and edition details can vary; the specific physical-edition facts established here are noted with the relevant recommendation. The date in the table marks the information check for this guide, not a claim that every game or edition is newly released.

Which RPGs are the best alternatives to BioWare?

Start with Baldur’s Gate 3 for a party-and-relationship-focused fantasy RPG; choose the other games according to their distinct settings and combat styles. The ranking favors the closest documented connection first, then a range of other ways to get a companion party, tactical decisions or a new kind of role-playing adventure.

BioWare’s catalogue includes its Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age and Mass Effect work, but “succeed” here is a question of creative fit, not corporate continuity. No studio is an official successor, and there is no independent cross-studio measure that can establish a single winner. A game can feel relevant because it has a party, a setting you want to inhabit, or choices to weigh without reproducing BioWare’s exact approach to dialogue, romance or combat.

1. Baldur’s Gate 3 — the closest historical connection

Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 is the clearest pick for a player looking for a modern party RPG tied to a series BioWare once made. BioWare’s own catalogue includes the earlier Baldur’s Gate games, but Larian—not BioWare—developed this entry. That connection makes it the most direct answer to “what should I play after old BioWare?” without implying that the studios share ownership or that the game reproduces BioWare’s exact storytelling or combat. (BioWare; Larian Studios)

The game’s official description emphasizes identity, cooperation, battles and romance in the Forgotten Realms. The publisher specifies 12 classes and 11 races drawn from the Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook, giving players a wide fantasy-character framework. That makes this a good fit when the appeal is forming a party and seeing how relationships and choices shape a fantasy adventure—not simply finding a game with the word “RPG” on its store page. The handbook reference describes the game’s character options; it does not mean you need to buy a tabletop rulebook or have played tabletop D&D first. (official game page)

For a different Larian option, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the studio’s other recommendation when tactical play and multiplayer matter more. Larian reports that it launched with a 93 Metacritic rating; that is the studio’s report, not an independently checked comparison in this article. Larian also reports that Baldur’s Gate 3 has received over 200 Game of the Year awards, a developer-reported count rather than a direct measure of whether it will suit a particular player. These figures can provide context about the studio’s own claims, but they do not tell you which game best matches your preferred kind of role-playing. (Larian Studios)

There is a physical Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition for PS5 with playable game discs. The PC edition’s disc is different: it requires a game download. This establishes what the official edition offers, not current stock or the availability of a particular retailer listing. If physical media is a deciding factor, check that the listing explicitly identifies the PS5 edition and playable discs rather than assuming the PC package works the same way. (official Deluxe Edition page)

Larian sells a Deluxe Edition and advertises official merchandise through its own channels. That does not establish a price, a particular retailer’s inventory, or that a specific marketplace listing is genuine. Treat the official edition details as a guide to what to verify before buying, not a promise about what is currently available in your region.

2. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire — for a classic fantasy party CRPG

Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is a natural choice if you want a fantasy party RPG with tactical combat rather than a first-person viewpoint. Obsidian presents it through its narrative, environments and tactical combat in Eora. That makes it the more directly party-oriented of the two Obsidian games here; the shared setting does not make it interchangeable with Avowed. (Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity site)

Pick Deadfire when your priority is a classic CRPG structure and tactical play. It suits a different itch from a BioWare action RPG: the draw is a party-based fantasy adventure, rather than first-person exploration. If “what feels like old BioWare?” means you want a fantasy party and tactical encounters, this is a reasonable alternative to consider alongside Baldur’s Gate 3. The available official description supports those distinctions, but not a claim that its companion writing or decision system is identical to Dragon Age.

In short, its strongest comparison is structural and atmospheric: fantasy, a party-oriented CRPG and tactical combat. Do not choose it expecting the same combat rhythm as an action-focused RPG, or assume a shared genre label guarantees the same balance of companions, story and player control.

3. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous — for a fantasy crusade

Owlcat’s Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is the fantasy-setting choice among the studio’s two games in this list. Owlcat identifies it as a fantasy CRPG, making it the one to consider if you want a large-scale fantasy role-playing framework rather than a science-fiction campaign. (Owlcat Games)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its appeal here is the genre-and-setting match: a fantasy CRPG for someone who wants a different studio’s take on party-focused role-playing. The studio’s label establishes the game’s broad form, but does not establish a one-to-one match for BioWare-style romance, dialogue branching or combat. Choose it for fantasy and CRPG structure, not on an assumption that all companion RPGs work alike.

If you are choosing between Owlcat’s two current recommendations here, use setting as the first filter: a fantasy crusade points to Wrath of the Righteous, while a science-fiction voidship adventure points to Rogue Trader. That is a more useful distinction than expecting both games to provide the same kind of BioWare experience.

4. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader — for a science-fiction party adventure

Owlcat’s Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is the science-fiction pick: the studio describes it as a Warhammer 40,000 CRPG, while its game site highlights companions and party positioning. If you want to keep a party-based role-playing adventure but leave fantasy worlds behind, this is the more relevant Owlcat choice. (Owlcat Games)

Its appeal differs from a space opera built around the same tone or storytelling formula as Mass Effect. The available description supports a sci-fi CRPG with companions and tactical party placement; it does not establish that the game has the same dialogue, romance or combat structure as BioWare’s series. If your key requirement is simply a science-fiction setting plus a party to manage, it is a strong candidate. If you specifically want a direct substitute for Mass Effect’s format, the evidence here is not enough to promise that match.

Owlcat also describes a physical collector’s box that includes a Cassia figure and a hardcover art book. That is a specific collector product rather than a general statement about platform editions, standard boxed copies or retailer stock. Check the contents and availability of the exact product you are considering rather than assuming every edition includes the same extras. (Owlcat Games)

5. Wasteland 3 — for squad tactics and ethical decisions

inXile describes Wasteland 3 as a squad-based RPG built around tactical turn-based combat, reactive storytelling and difficult ethical decisions. It is the strongest choice in this group if you want a squad rather than a traditional fantasy party, and if moral consequences and tactical encounters are the priority. (inXile’s Wasteland 3 page)

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

That design makes it a useful alternative for players who valued choices with consequences in BioWare games, but the evidence supports a broad similarity in emphasis—not a claim that the decision systems or companions are the same. Its tactical, turn-based squad combat also separates it from action-oriented RPG combat approaches. Think of “reactive storytelling” and “difficult ethical decisions” as the developer’s description of the game’s focus, not a guarantee that every choice will produce a particular kind of outcome.

For someone asking what to play after Dragon Age, Wasteland 3 is a less direct fantasy match than Baldur’s Gate 3 or Deadfire, but it may fit better if tactical choices matter more than setting. Its distinction is the squad-and-decision combination, not a claim to share BioWare’s worldbuilding or relationship systems.

6. Avowed — for first-person fantasy in Eora

Obsidian’s Avowed is a first-person fantasy RPG set in Eora. Choose it when you want to explore a fantasy world from a first-person perspective rather than manage a classic party CRPG. Obsidian’s anniversary update and PS5 version were available on February 17, 2026; that date establishes those releases, not the full list of platforms or current regional availability. (Obsidian)

Avowed and Deadfire share a world but offer different ways into it: first-person fantasy RPG versus party-oriented tactical CRPG. If the part of BioWare you miss most is a companion ensemble, Deadfire is the closer structural fit based on the descriptions available here. If you want to inhabit and explore a fantasy setting from a first-person view, consider Avowed.

This is the clearest choice in the list for readers whose priority is perspective rather than party management. It should not be treated as an interchangeable version of Deadfire simply because both games are set in Eora; the first-person viewpoint and exploration emphasis set up a different kind of play.

7. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — for a distinct combat blend

Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a Belle Époque-inspired quest with turn-based battles that include real-time mechanics. That combination makes it a distinctive option for someone who wants a dramatic party journey but is interested in a combat style that is not purely turn-based. (official Expedition 33 site)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a looser BioWare comparison than Baldur’s Gate 3: the documented overlap is a party-led role-playing journey, while the official description cited here does not establish BioWare-style branching dialogue or romance. The official site also names GameStop as the exclusive US distributor of its Lumière and collector’s editions, and marks the collector’s edition sold out. That is a US-specific distribution detail, not a claim about stock elsewhere. Do not treat the GameStop-exclusive Lumière Edition as an Amazon option. (official game site)

Choose Expedition 33 if the combat mix itself is part of the appeal: its battles combine turn-based and real-time mechanics, rather than fitting neatly into a purely turn-based or purely action description. The official site’s edition details are regional and can change, so confirm the current distributor and status if you are shopping for a special edition.

Which game should you choose after Dragon Age or Mass Effect?

For a BioWare-style fantasy party, begin with Baldur’s Gate 3 or Deadfire; for science fiction, consider Rogue Trader. The right choice turns on what you want to preserve—companions and relationships, tactical decision-making, the setting, or the perspective—not on finding one studio that can stand in for BioWare across every series.

  • You want a party and relationships: Start with Baldur’s Gate 3, whose official description explicitly highlights cooperation and romance.
  • You want a classic fantasy CRPG: Look at Deadfire for tactical combat in Eora, or Wrath of the Righteous for Owlcat’s fantasy CRPG.
  • You want science fiction with companions: Consider Rogue Trader, which Owlcat describes as a Warhammer 40,000 CRPG with companions and party positioning.
  • You want tactical squad combat and ethical dilemmas: Choose Wasteland 3, whose developer explicitly describes those elements.
  • You want first-person fantasy: Choose Avowed over a classic party CRPG.
  • You want turn-based combat with real-time elements: Consider Expedition 33.

None is an all-purpose replacement. A player who wants Mass Effect’s science-fiction setting may lean toward Rogue Trader, while a player primarily looking for BioWare’s older fantasy lineage has the more direct historical connection in Baldur’s Gate 3. If your question is “what feels like old BioWare?”, start by deciding whether you mean the party, the fantasy setting, the relationships or the tactical format. Those preferences point to different games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are also limits to what can be responsibly promised: the official descriptions establish broad design features, but do not provide a shared yardstick for companion depth, amount of branching, campaign length, difficulty or how much a player’s decisions change the story. Treat the recommendations as a shortlist based on documented features, then check the current platform and edition information for the particular version you want.

Are there upcoming games from these studios to watch?

Two announced projects may interest players looking beyond released games, but they are not substitutes you can currently treat as completed releases. Owlcat describes The Expanse: Osiris Reborn as an upcoming sci-fi action RPG, and says an eligible-founder beta was available in April 2026. inXile lists Clockwork Revolution for 2027. (Owlcat Games; inXile Entertainment)

Osiris Reborn is the future project to watch if you want another science-fiction RPG from a studio already represented here by Rogue Trader. Its April beta was for eligible founders; that detail does not make it a generally available full release. Clockwork Revolution is described as a time-bending first-person RPG and is listed for 2027, so it belongs on a watch list rather than among games to play now. Dates and release status can change, so check the studios’ current announcements before making plans around either title.

How were these games selected?

The selection favors released games whose studios’ descriptions establish a meaningful point of connection with BioWare’s role-playing catalogue: party relationships, tactical or turn-based combat, consequential decisions, a fantasy or science-fiction setting, or a distinctive role-playing perspective. It also separates different formats instead of implying that every fantasy RPG or sci-fi CRPG offers the same companions, choices or combat. BioWare’s closure makes the comparison timely, but no independent cross-studio measure establishes which developer “succeeds” BioWare.

The list is not based on firsthand testing or a numerical ranking. Its order starts with the strongest historical link, then offers choices that diverge by setting, combat and viewpoint. That makes it more useful to choose by the features you value than to treat the final entry as necessarily less worthwhile than the first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does playing Baldur’s Gate 3 require knowing Dungeons & Dragons rules?

The game’s official page identifies 12 classes and 11 races from the D&D Player’s Handbook, but the cited description does not say that a player needs prior tabletop experience. The handbook reference identifies the game’s character framework, not a required purchase or prerequisite.

Who made Baldur’s Gate 3?

Larian Studios developed Baldur’s Gate 3. BioWare made earlier games in the Baldur’s Gate series, but Larian’s game is not a BioWare production or an ownership handoff.

What should I play after Dragon Age?

For a fantasy party RPG, start with Baldur’s Gate 3 or Obsidian’s party-oriented Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. If tactical squad combat and ethical choices matter more than fantasy setting, consider Wasteland 3. These are different creative approaches, not exact copies of Dragon Age.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a new Mass Effect alternative?

For a released science-fiction party CRPG, consider Owlcat’s Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, which features companions and party positioning. Owlcat also describes The Expanse: Osiris Reborn as an upcoming sci-fi action RPG; its eligible-founder beta in April 2026 was not a full public release.

Is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn a full game yet?

Owlcat calls it an upcoming sci-fi action RPG and notes that an eligible-founder beta was available in April 2026. That beta is not evidence that the full game has been released.

Does Expedition 33 have the same romance system as Dragon Age?

The official description cited for Expedition 33 establishes a Belle Époque-inspired quest and turn-based combat with real-time mechanics, but does not establish a Dragon Age-style romance system. A similarity in party-adventure framing is not enough to infer the same relationship features.

Does the Baldur’s Gate 3 PC Deluxe Edition include a playable disc?

The official edition page distinguishes the PS5 Deluxe Edition, which has playable game discs, from the PC edition’s disc, which requires a game download. Check the exact edition details before buying, and verify the retailer’s current listing and stock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook required to play Baldur’s Gate 3?

The cited official description uses the handbook to identify the game’s 12 classes and 11 races. It does not establish that you need to own a handbook or have tabletop experience.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Baldur’s Gate 3 is the best first stop for the historical Baldur’s Gate connection, party relationships and consequential fantasy role-playing. For a different fit, choose Deadfire or Wrath of the Righteous for fantasy CRPGs, Rogue Trader for science-fiction companions, Wasteland 3 for squad tactics and hard choices, Avowed for first-person fantasy, or Expedition 33 for turn-based combat with real-time mechanics. No one studio is BioWare’s official successor, and upcoming projects should not be mistaken for released games.
