6 Settings I Recommend Changing on Your New Switch 2

The best Switch 2 settings to change first—including HDR, 120 Hz, Auto Low-Latency Mode, Handheld Mode Boost, charging limits, screen lock, and battery percentage.

The best first-day Switch 2 changes fall into three groups: better TV picture and responsiveness, better original-Switch behavior in handheld mode, and easier battery and privacy management. Update the console first, then change the settings below selectively—Handheld Mode Boost and HDR are not universal “on” recommendations.

Menu names below reflect Nintendo’s North American interface and may change with system updates.

Update the console first

Before judging any setting, install the latest system update. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings → System → System Update. Nintendo’s published update history currently lists version 22.1.0, released April 6, 2026, with general stability improvements. Version 22.0.0 added Handheld Mode Boost and renamed the charging option to Stop Charging Around 80-90%.

While you are there, enable Software Auto-Updates if the console normally connects to the internet. Some features and menu labels depend on current system software. A microSD Express card also requires an internet-connected system update the first time it is used.

1. Set TV HDR to Compatible Software Only

Open System Settings → Display. Under the TV options, set HDR Output to Compatible Software Only as the safest general starting point.

The Switch 2 offers three TV HDR choices:

  • For All Software
  • Compatible Software Only
  • Off

Compatible Software Only avoids forcing HDR processing onto games that do not support HDR. That does not mean it will look best on every television: HDR depends on the TV’s calibration, picture mode, brightness, and tone mapping. If you prefer the result from For All Software, you can use it—but test it rather than assuming it is automatically better.

The Switch 2 has separate HDR controls for its built-in display and a connected television. System Screen’s HDR Output controls the handheld screen; HDR Output controls TV output. Changing one does not automatically change the other. If you enable HDR on either display, use Adjust HDR where available and test with a known HDR-compatible game.

If the image looks washed out, too dim, or oversaturated, return TV HDR to Compatible Software Only or turn it off, then check the television’s HDR picture mode and tone mapping.

2. Turn on 120 Hz Output if your display supports it

In System Settings → Display, enable 120 Hz Output if your TV or monitor supports it.

This setting does not make every game run at 120 frames per second. The display, the software, and the selected resolution all matter. Nintendo specifies that Switch 2’s 120 Hz output works at 1080p and 1440p, not 4K. A 4K television may therefore need to switch to 1080p or 1440p when using a 120 Hz mode.

Some TVs offer 120 Hz only on particular HDMI ports or after an “enhanced HDMI” option is enabled. Those are television-side settings, not Switch 2 settings.

If the display flickers, loses signal, or selects an unexpected resolution:

  1. Turn off 120 Hz Output.
  2. Set TV Resolution to Automatic.
  3. Try the TV’s specified high-bandwidth HDMI port.
  4. Check the television’s enhanced HDMI or gaming settings.

Enable this option when supported, but think of it as making a higher-refresh display mode available—not as a universal performance upgrade.

3. Enable Auto Low-Latency Mode

Go to System Settings → Display and enable Auto Low-Latency Mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a compatible television, this can automatically switch the TV into its low-latency or Game Mode when you play. It changes the TV’s behavior; it is not a measured guarantee of a particular input-lag result.

Your television may call the feature ALLM or Auto Game Mode. Some TVs also require HDMI control or an enhanced HDMI mode to be enabled. If nothing changes, connect the Switch 2 directly to the TV or a compatible receiver, try another HDMI port, and check the television’s manual.

Game Mode can disable or reduce some preferred image-processing features. If you use a cinema or filmmaker picture mode and dislike the automatic switch, leave Auto Low-Latency Mode off and select your TV mode manually.

4. Try Handheld Mode Boost for original Switch games

Open System Settings → System → Nintendo Switch Software Handling → Handheld Mode Boost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn it on when playing a compatible original Nintendo Switch game undocked and you would rather try for better visuals than preserve maximum battery life or every handheld-specific feature. Nintendo describes the feature as making compatible original-Switch software run in handheld mode as though it were running in TV mode.

The effect varies by game. Some titles may use higher-quality visual settings intended for TV mode; others may be unaffected. Handheld Mode Boost has no effect on native Nintendo Switch 2 software.

This is the one recommendation that should not be treated as universal. Nintendo warns that Boost can:

  • Increase power consumption.
  • Prevent original-Switch software from using the touchscreen.
  • Cause attached Joy-Con 2 controllers to be treated as a Switch 2 Pro Controller.
  • Make software instructions incorrect or cause features to fail because the game believes it is running in TV mode.

Use Boost for visually demanding original-Switch games when playing away from the dock. Leave it off for touchscreen-heavy games, titles with unusual handheld-only behavior, or sessions where battery life matters more than visual quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a game loses touch functionality or behaves incorrectly, return to the same menu and disable Handheld Mode Boost. Do not assume the game or console is defective before checking this setting.

5. Enable Stop Charging Around 80-90% if you frequently use the dock

Go to System Settings → System and enable Stop Charging Around 80-90%.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo says this setting is intended to help reduce loss of battery capacity over time. It is especially useful if your Switch 2 spends most of its life docked or plugged in. The setting was previously labeled Stop Charging Around 90%; use the wording shown on your current system software.

Leave it off when you are about to travel and need every possible minute away from an outlet, or when you regularly begin long sessions with little charge available. If the battery stops around 80–90%, check this setting before treating the behavior as a fault.

Nintendo does not promise a specific number of additional months or years of battery life, so regard this as a long-term capacity-management option rather than a guaranteed lifespan extension.

6. Turn on screen lock and battery percentage

In System Settings → System, enable the option requiring the same button to be pressed three times to exit sleep mode. You can also require a PIN when waking the system.

Three-button wake is useful for preventing accidental wake-ups in a bag and adds a small privacy barrier on a shared console. A PIN is worth considering if other people can access the system or if it is frequently carried outside the home. On a private, single-user console, the extra steps may not be worth the convenience trade-off.

Also enable the option to show the current battery percentage on the HOME Menu. A percentage is more useful than a rough battery icon when deciding whether to begin a long handheld session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Screen lock is not a replacement for Nintendo Account security, parental controls, or an eShop password.

Useful settings to review while you are there

Sleep Mode

Open System Settings → Sleep Mode. Handheld auto-sleep can be set to 1, 3, 5, 10, or 30 minutes, or Never. TV-mode options range from 15 minutes to 12 hours, plus Never. Media playback has a separate four-hour idle option.

A practical starting point is 10 or 30 minutes for handheld play, depending on how often you pause games, while keeping TV-mode auto-sleep enabled. Turn off Keep Wired Connection Active in Sleep Mode if reducing standby energy use matters more than immediate downloads.

GameChat and parental controls

GameChat requires a Nintendo Account, a persistent internet connection, a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the latest system update. For children under 16, Nintendo requires the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for GameChat management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app can manage chat approvals, video chat, play-time limits, gameplay history, and other restrictions. Most parental-control restrictions apply to the whole console rather than independently to each user, so families should choose system-wide settings with the youngest player in mind.

microSD Express storage

If you need more storage, buy a microSD Express card—not an ordinary microSD card that worked in the original Switch. Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB for games, DLC, updates, screenshots, and videos. Game-save data remains in system memory and cannot be copied to the card.
