New to Metaphor: ReFantazio? Start by learning its hybrid combat, experimenting with Archetypes, and checking the calendar before choosing how to spend your time. These seven flexible tips focus on systems worth noticing without turning a first playthrough into a rigid, spoiler-heavy route.
1. Learn how the two combat modes fit together
ATLUS describes combat as a blend of real-time action and turn-based battles. Think of them as parts of one combat loop rather than two unrelated systems: pay attention to how the game presents encounters, then use the mode and options available in that situation. The official overview establishes the hybrid structure, but not every tactical tradeoff, so learn the details from the in-game prompts instead of relying on a supposed universal rule. ATLUS’s official game overview introduces the combat system.

Try this: In an early encounter, pause long enough to read the available choices and notice when the game shifts from real-time action to a turn-based battle.
2. Experiment with Archetypes before settling on a build
Archetypes are a core system to learn alongside combat, as Xbox Wire’s beginner guide emphasizes. Rather than trying to plan a complex setup immediately, read the skills and role descriptions for the options you have unlocked. A small, deliberate experiment will teach you more than committing to a build based on assumptions.

#1 Best Overall
- IGN and GameSpot "Game of the Year" and "Best RPG" from The Game Awards
- ATLUS' newest fantasy JRPG with beautiful anime cutscenes
- Free demo with save-data carry over
- Awaken 40+ "Archetypes," magical powers that lie dormant in your heart
- Innovative battle system that blends strategic turn-based combat and dynamic real-time combat
The available beginner guidance does not establish an optimal Archetype for each character or a complete skill-inheritance formula. Treat your early choices as a way to understand the system, not as a permanent test you can fail.
Try this: Pick one available Archetype whose listed skills appeal to you, use it for a while, and compare its role with another option when one becomes available.
3. Check the calendar before committing to an activity
The calendar matters because choosing one activity can mean giving up time for another. Xbox Wire specifically advises players to watch the in-game calendar. Before committing, look at the options presented and consider whether you want to prioritize story or dungeon progress, or spend the opportunity on another available activity.
There is no verified day-by-day route established by the cited beginner guidance. You do not need to treat every calendar choice as a hidden checklist or assume that one schedule is required for a satisfying playthrough.

Try this: Make a quick habit of checking the calendar and available activities before confirming how to spend a day.
4. Leave room for bonds and virtues
ATLUS says that players can strengthen relationships, build bonds, and increase virtues at night. These options give downtime a purpose beyond simply advancing the main story. When the game offers a chance to pursue them, consider whether developing a relationship or virtue fits your current priorities.
Try this: During downtime, inspect the activities on offer and choose one bond or virtue opportunity that interests you. The available information does not establish that every bond or virtue can be completed on a particular route.
5. Use official overviews for orientation; choose a guide for depth
If a system feels unclear, begin with the official ATLUS overview or Xbox Wire beginner guide. They are useful for getting oriented without requiring you to follow a completionist plan.

Nintendo separately describes a 55-page English digital guide as a curated excerpt of the full guide; it is available to owners of the Atlus 35th Digital Anniversary Edition, not presented as a broadly available standalone book. Nintendo’s guide announcement explains that distinction.

You can learn the combat and activity systems without looking up story outcomes. If you consult a walkthrough, choose one that labels spoilers clearly and use only the section you need. For many questions, the game’s own prompts and a general system overview are enough; save plot-specific searches for when you are comfortable seeing story details.
Try this: Before opening a guide, search for the system name or a specific gameplay question rather than a character or story outcome.
7. Treat these tips as priorities, not a completion route
Broad beginner advice can help you notice the game’s systems, but it is not the same as a verified, no-miss schedule. The available official guidance supports learning the hybrid combat, Archetypes, calendar, bonds, and virtues; it does not establish a canonical day-by-day route for completing everything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
