Grand Theft Auto VI is still unreleased as of October 30, 2026. Rockstar lists November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so the recommendations below are games you can play now rather than predictions about GTA VI’s eventual pacing.

When is GTA 6 releasing, and what does that mean for this list?
Rockstar’s current schedule puts Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar describes it as a single-player experience, but no released game can demonstrate how its missions will fit a short evening. Treat this guide as a way to play open-world games now, not as a judgment on GTA VI before launch.
If you are pre-ordering the physical Standard Edition, read the format carefully. Rockstar’s editions document says, “A disc will not be included in the box”; the package contains a download code. The choices here solve different parts of the GTA fantasy. Sleeping Dogs is the closest undercover-crime-city substitute, Watch Dogs 2 supplies a contemporary city and hacking, and the two Forza Horizon games focus on driving rather than shooting. LEGO 2K Drive is the clearest option when you need a discrete activity such as one race, while Spider-Man 2 and Just Cause 3 turn movement and destruction into self-contained playgrounds.

Is Sleeping Dogs the closest shorter-session alternative to GTA?

The compromise is age: it is a 2014-era game, so visual presentation and systems are older than the upcoming GTA VI.
PlayStation warns that the PS4 version may exhibit errors or missing features when played on PS5. Check the current store compatibility notice before buying for PS5, and do not infer that a listing guarantees perfect support on every console revision.
Should I play Watch Dogs 2 for a modern city and hacking?
Choose Watch Dogs 2 when you want urban roaming and improvisation more than a traditional gangland story. Watch Dogs 2 is not a one-for-one replacement for GTA. Its tone is more playful, its hacking is central, and the story follows a tech-activist group rather than an organized-crime rise. That difference is an advantage if you want a city sandbox that feels distinct; it is a drawback if your non-negotiable requirement is buying weapons, stealing cars and following a conventional crime campaign.
Is Forza Horizon 5 good when I mainly want to drive?
Yes, provided you are willing to trade GTA’s on-foot crime for open-road driving. Forza Horizon 5 offers an open-world Mexico with events, challenges, collectibles and exploration. The trade-off is tone and subject matter. This is colorful, family-oriented racing with vehicle building and playful hazards, not an adult crime simulator with shooting and realistic city life. That makes it a better shared-screen or family choice, but a poor substitute if your main goal is undercover stories or gunplay.

Can Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 satisfy the urge to roam a city for a few minutes?

You can also choose a vehicle stunt or collectible sweep as your stopping point. Because the activities are varied, you can switch from traversal to destruction without committing to a long narrative sequence.
The game is intentionally exaggerated. Grappling objects together, launching yourself through the map and demolishing installations are the appeal; realism, subtle crime systems and a dense modern metropolis are not.
