1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe 8BitDo Pro 2 packs two rear buttons, three switchable profiles, motion controls for Switch, and extensive software customization into a familiar, retro-inspired layout. That feature mix helped make it a compelling $50 gamepad in 2021. The current Hall Effect joystick edition is listed at $49.99 on 8BitDo’s store, but it was marked sold out when checked in 2026, so the old bargain framing is not a guarantee of today’s price or availability.
What the Pro 2 offers
The Pro 2 is a Bluetooth controller with a symmetrical stick layout, a prominent D-pad, two rear paddle buttons, and a physical mode switch. Its current official listing advertises Hall Effect joysticks. It connects over Bluetooth 4.0 or USB-C, and includes the controller, a USB cable, and a manual.

Its appeal is less about one headline feature than the number of ways it can be configured. You can map controls, adjust stick and trigger behavior, set vibration, and create macros with 8BitDo Ultimate Software. Three custom profiles can be saved and switched on the controller, while the mode switch provides a quick way to select a connection mode for different devices. The manufacturer lists motion control for Switch.

Rear buttons and profiles
The two rear buttons can be assigned to other controls, making actions accessible without moving a thumb from a stick. They are not extra independent inputs: their usefulness comes from remapping existing controls. Three onboard profiles let you keep different mappings available rather than reconfiguring everything each time.

Software customization
Ultimate Software is available on PC and mobile, according to 8BitDo. It supports button mapping, stick and trigger adjustments, vibration settings, and macros. That depth is useful if you want different setups for different games, but it also means the controller’s flexibility depends partly on whether you are willing to configure it.
How it feels to play
Reviews from 2021 praised the Pro 2’s controls and feature set, but those impressions should not be mistaken for testing of the later Hall Effect joystick edition. Ars Technica praised its overall functionality, design, and options, particularly the low-profile customizable rear buttons. PCWorld’s Adam Patrick Murray liked the D-pad and control feedback, while noting that the flat face could make the D-pad and X button feel farther away for some users. That is an individual ergonomic observation, not a measured fit issue for everyone.

The D-pad is a notable part of the Pro 2’s appeal, particularly if you play games where directional input matters. PCWorld’s favorable impression is encouraging, but hand size, grip, and play style can change whether the relatively flat front layout feels comfortable. If possible, try the controller before committing to long sessions.

Compatibility: check your platform before buying
8BitDo lists support for the platforms below. The manufacturer notes that additional system support may require firmware; check its Pro 2 product page for the current requirements and setup information for your specific device.
| Platform | Listed support or requirement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | Supported; motion control is listed for Switch. | 8BitDo says Switch compatibility does not support HD rumble or amiibo scanning. The controller provides regular rumble, not HD Rumble. |
| Windows | Windows 10 (1903 or later). | Additional system support may require firmware. |
| SteamOS | SteamOS 3.7.13 or later. | Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility and setup guidance for your configuration. |
| Android | Android 9 or later. | Additional system support may require firmware. |
| Apple devices | Apple operating systems are listed; consult 8BitDo’s product page for the specific version requirements. | Confirm the requirements for your device and operating system before buying. |
| Raspberry Pi | Supported; consult the official page for setup details. | Additional system support may require firmware. |
The Pro 2 is not a universal console controller. 8BitDo’s Pro 2 FAQ lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii, and Wii U as unsupported. If one of those is your target system, do not assume that Bluetooth or a mode switch makes the controller compatible.

Battery, charging, and current price
8BitDo specifies a 1,000 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery, up to 20 hours of playtime, and a four-hour charging time. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified endurance results for the current Hall Effect edition. Engadget’s 2021 review likewise cautioned that its roughly 20-hour estimate was not based on a full battery rundown.

The $50 framing belongs to the launch-era reviews: Ars Technica described the original Pro 2 as a $50 bargain in April 2021. The official store listing for the Hall Effect joystick edition showed $49.99 USD and sold out when accessed in 2026. Both price and stock can change, so check the 8BitDo Shop listing rather than treating either figure as a current offer.
Who should consider the 8BitDo Pro 2?
- Consider it if you want a configurable Bluetooth controller for one of its supported platforms, value a D-pad-oriented layout, or expect to use rear-button remapping and saved profiles.
- Look elsewhere if you need PS5 or Xbox compatibility, or if HD rumble and amiibo scanning are essential for Switch play.
- Try the shape first if comfort is a priority. One PCWorld reviewer found the flat face could require extra reach to the D-pad and X button; individual comfort will vary.
The optional Mobile Clip mounts a phone for a handheld-style setup, and 8BitDo says it is compatible with nearly all smartphones; check fit for your particular phone. The Pro 2 carrying case is another separate purchase and can also hold the Mobile Clip. Neither accessory is included with the controller.
How the reviews fit the current model
Ars Technica, PCWorld, and Engadget reviewed the Pro 2 in 2021. Their praise helps explain the controller’s original reputation for offering substantial customization at its launch-era price, but the reviews predate the current official listing’s Hall Effect joystick claim. They should not be read as tests of that later hardware revision. The available sources also do not establish current-model comparative performance in controlled latency, polling-rate, battery-endurance, or durability testing.
