Microsoft directs former Skype users to Microsoft Teams Free, but the games below work just as well on Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, Discord, FaceTime, or another video-call service.
For the easiest game night, choose an activity with short turns, simple rules, and no specialist equipment. Charades, 20 Questions, trivia, Pictionary, scavenger hunts, and storytelling are all reliable choices—and most cost nothing beyond the call you already use.

Is Skype still available?
Microsoft retired the consumer Skype service on May 5, 2025. Its recommended migration route is Teams Free: sign in with your Skype credentials and, where supported, transfer Skype contacts and chats. Microsoft says this is separate from Skype for Business, which is a different product. Read the official Skype retirement information before relying on old account data or chat history.
So if you search for “games to play over Skype,” treat that as shorthand for games over a video call. The ideas do not depend on a particular app.

What makes a video-call game work?
The best choices generally have:
- Rules that take less than two minutes to explain.
- No specialist equipment or separate account for every player.
- Clear turns, a timer, or a simple way to submit answers.
- Little dependence on perfectly synchronized action or low-latency audio.
- A fallback if the camera, screen sharing, or connection fails.
Before the call, choose a host, decide how answers will be submitted, and send any prompts or printable materials in advance. For groups larger than six, a scorekeeper and fixed turn order prevent most chaos.
The easiest no-preparation games
Two Truths and a Lie
Players: 3–10. Time: 10–30 minutes. Equipment: None.
Each player says three statements about themselves. Two are true and one is false; everyone else votes on the lie. Give each person one minute to prepare. A theme such as travel, childhood, food, school, or work makes the game easier to start.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A simple scoring system awards one point for identifying the lie and one point when nobody identifies yours. With children or coworkers, avoid dangerous, embarrassing, or excessively personal statements.
Would You Rather?
Offer two hypothetical choices and ask everyone to choose one and explain why. Examples include “Would you rather explore space or the deep ocean?” and “Would you rather always be early or always be perfectly prepared?”
This is particularly good for couples, families, and people who do not usually play games. Keep questions optional and avoid scenarios involving humiliation, coercion, health risks, or pressure to disclose private information.
20 Questions
One player secretly chooses a person, place, animal, or object. The others ask questions that can be answered only with yes or no. They have up to 20 questions to identify it.
For mixed-age groups, use broad categories first and agree whether fictional characters, proper nouns, and abstract ideas are allowed. The game works with cameras off and is also a good fallback when the connection is unstable.
Never Have I Ever
Players hold up five fingers. One person says something they have never done; anyone who has done it lowers a finger. The last player with fingers remaining wins, or simply use points instead of elimination.

- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for calls, meetings, music, and more
- Rotating Noise-Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when not in use
- Handy Inline Controls: Simple inline controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- USB-C Plug-and-Play: Simply plug the USB-C cable into your computer, including MacBook Neo laptops, and you're ready to talk or listen without installing software.
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable USB C headphones with adjustable headband feature swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort
For family, school, or workplace calls, use harmless prompts and avoid alcohol penalties. Players should be able to pass on a question without explanation.
Categories
Choose a category—animals, films, countries, foods, or songs, for example. Players take turns naming an item. A player loses a point for repeating an answer, taking too long, or giving an invalid response.
Use a 10-second timer and a fixed order. For younger children, remove the elimination rule and let the group work together toward a target number of answers.
Story-building
One player begins with a sentence. Each person adds one sentence in turn, creating a shared story. You can make it easier by choosing a setting and three required objects at the start.
This is cooperative, requires no camera, and works well with grandparents, children, and players who dislike competition.
Word chains
Say a word; the next player must give a word beginning with its final letter. For example: elephant → tiger → rabbit. Add a category for extra difficulty, such as animals or foods.

Games that use the camera
Charades
Players: 4 or more. Equipment: A private prompt list and a timer.
- Choose a category such as animals, films, jobs, or everyday actions.
- Send the actor a prompt privately by direct message, text, or a prepared list.
- Set a 60–90 second timer.
- The actor mutes their microphone and performs while the others guess.
- Award a point for a correct guess, then rotate the actor.
Gallery view is usually better than speaker view because players can watch the whole group. If the camera crops out body movements, use close-up prompts involving facial expressions, sounds without words, or recognizable objects.
Rank #3
- Wireframe headset fits securely for active speakers and vocal performers
- Permanently charged electret condenser cartridge delivers detailed, crisp vocals
- Unidirectional cardioid polar pattern rejects unwanted noise for improved sound quality and higher gain-before-feedback
- Flexible gooseneck design and discrete adjustment capabilities optimize microphone positioning for further source isolation
- TA4F (TQG) connector seamlessly integrates with Shure wireless body packs
Scavenger hunt
The host calls out an object or clue and players find it, then bring it back to the camera. Try “something blue,” “something older than you,” “an object beginning with B,” or “something you use every day.”
Use a timer and award a point for the first valid item. Do not encourage running, climbing, entering unsafe areas, disturbing other people, or searching outside without supervision. For children, restrict clues to objects within reach.
Show and tell
Each player brings an object and gives clues before revealing it. The group guesses what it is, where it came from, or why it matters.
It is one of the best low-pressure options for children, older relatives, and mixed-age families. Ask participants not to show private documents, addresses, valuables, or anything belonging to someone else without permission.
Guess the sound
A player makes a sound off-camera using a household object. Everyone else guesses it. Paper, keys, water, clapping, a zipper, and tapping on different surfaces are easy starting points.

Mute everyone except the person making the sound. If microphones distort quiet noises, move closer to the device or use a more distinctive object.
Themed costume or object contest
Choose a theme, allow preparation time, and vote using chat, a platform poll, or visible fingers. Themes might include a favorite fictional character, the best hat, an outfit made from household items, or a favorite food.
Use categories such as “most inventive” rather than judging people’s appearance. Obtain consent before recording or publicly sharing the call.
Lip-sync battle
Players perform silently to a song while their microphone is muted. The music can play locally for the performer, while the group votes afterward.

This works best as a private party activity. Music rights and platform audio handling vary, so do not assume that a performance can be rebroadcast or uploaded publicly.
Paper-and-pencil games
Pictionary
One player draws while everyone guesses. Use a large sheet of paper held close to the camera, a shared whiteboard, or a digital drawing canvas. Thick lines and simple prompts are easier to see than detailed sketches.
Send the prompt privately. Test screen sharing first: a shared window can accidentally reveal the answer or a private message. A random-word generator can help, but third-party sites and their availability may change.
Battleship
Two players use matching numbered grids, secretly place ships, and call coordinates such as B7. Mark hits and misses on separate grids.
Send identical blank grids before the call, agree on coordinate notation, and use a scorekeeper for a tournament. Players can hold up their boards only when necessary; keeping boards private makes the game clearer and fairer.
Dots and Boxes
Draw a grid of dots. On each turn, add one line between neighboring dots. Completing the fourth side of a box earns a point and another turn.
This is easiest with two players. With a larger group, have one person maintain a large board on camera or a shared canvas.
Tic-Tac-Toe
Use a paper board, a large sheet visible to both players, or a shared whiteboard. It is best for two people or as a quick tournament while others watch.

Word guessing
Hangman-style play works over a call, but choose familiar words and a category. A neutral progress bar or a fixed number of incorrect guesses is a more comfortable alternative to drawing a person. Players can guess verbally or submit letters in chat.

Trivia and guessing games
Trivia
One host reads five to ten questions per round. Players answer verbally, write answers on paper, hold up fingers for multiple choice, or submit responses in chat.
For a fairer game, use prepared questions rather than allowing live web searches. A host should read questions from a private device or document, while a scorekeeper tracks results. Chat is useful for simultaneous answers, but check whether the platform makes messages visible to everyone.
Who Am I?
Choose a real or fictional person for each player. A label can be sent privately, or the host can give clues one at a time. Players ask yes-or-no questions until they identify themselves.

Childhood-photo guessing
Collect photos in advance, show one at a time, and let players guess whose picture it is. Get permission before collecting or sharing photographs, especially in workplace groups, and avoid forwarding the images after the call without consent.
Online games to play alongside the call
Jackbox Games
Jackbox is designed for hosted party play: one person runs a game and shares the screen, while participants commonly use phones or browsers as controllers. Some titles allow audience members in addition to active players.
The trade-offs are important. Usually one person must own or purchase the relevant game, the host device must run it and share its screen, and player limits vary by title. Some games depend heavily on typing, drawing, reading speed, or adult humor, so check the specific pack and audience before starting. See the official Jackbox site rather than assuming every title has the same rules or content.
Board Game Arena
Board Game Arena is a browser-based option for digital board games. It suits players who want turn-based strategy while continuing to talk on the video call. It is less suitable for a completely spontaneous family call if participants need to create accounts or learn a complicated game first.
Tabletopia
Tabletopia provides a digital tabletop environment. It can be a good fit for players who want to manipulate a virtual board, but setup, access rules, and the amount of automation vary by game. Check the current game and plan requirements before promising that a particular title is free.
Chess and checkers
Two players can keep the call open while using a separate chess or checkers board. Chess.com and the free, nonprofit Lichess are possible chess options; exact features and account requirements can change.
Turn-based games tolerate weak connections better than real-time games. They can also be played asynchronously when time zones do not match.

How to keep a virtual game night manageable
- Choose one host. The host explains rules, distributes prompts, and decides disputed answers.
- Use a fixed turn order. Go clockwise by the participant list or assign numbers.
- Set timers. Short rounds prevent one person from dominating and keep large groups moving.
- Use the right call controls. Mute for charades and sound games; chat for simultaneous answers; screen sharing for boards and trivia; gallery view for reactions.
- Protect private information. Send prompts directly, and check what is visible before sharing a screen.
- Offer accessibility alternatives. Permit chat answers, larger text, extra thinking time, camera-off participation, and drawing or writing instead of acting.
- Have a fallback. If the call drops, rejoin through the same invite. Continue turn-based games by text while the host keeps the score and board.
Common problems and fixes
- Everyone talks at once: use chat, numbered turns, or a raise-hand function.
- The game is too slow: shorten turns and remove games with long individual turns when more than eight people join.
- Players see the answer: send prompts privately and keep answer documents off the shared screen.
- Drawings are unreadable: use thick markers, a large sheet, or a digital canvas.
- Audio feedback occurs: use headphones, mute when not speaking, and avoid joining from nearby devices.
- One person dominates: rotate hosts, use teams, and apply equal turn timers.
Quick recommendations
- No preparation: Would You Rather or 20 Questions.
- Best for families: Charades.
- Best for two people: Battleship or chess.
- Best for large groups: Trivia or Jackbox.
- Best for children: A supervised scavenger hunt.
- Best with weak internet: Categories or storytelling.
- Best without downloads: Pictionary on paper.
- Best current Skype replacement: Microsoft Teams Free, if you want Microsoft’s official migration path rather than a game-specific service.
You do not need to buy anything to make a video call more enjoyable. Start with a no-download game, keep rounds short, and add a digital board or party-game pack only if your group wants more structure.
