For a balanced Ultimate Team starting point, try 4-4-2; choose 4-2-3-1 (2) for extra central protection, or 4-3-3 (3) when you want wingers and a central striker. The ranking below weighs shape, squad fit and practical trade-offs—not win rates. The detailed recommendations it draws on were published in May 2025, and EA’s FC IQ explanation describes how formations and roles work rather than naming a universally best setup. Formations and tactics can suit Career Mode or other modes differently.
How to read this ranking
A formation sets the positions available and the team’s defensive alignment, but it is not a complete tactic: player roles influence off-ball behavior too. EA’s FC IQ system distinguishes role familiarity, including Role+ and Role++, and says out-of-position players can use simplified roles and perform at lower quality. In practice, compare the shape with your squad’s preferred positions and roles, then tune build-up and defensive settings.

The top three have detailed recommendations in Nate Searl’s May 16, 2025 Ultimate Team guide. The remaining entries are practical alternatives, not equally substantiated rankings: that guide names them as options but offers less comparable evaluation. The order is an editorial fit-based synthesis, not a measured competitive ranking.

1. 4-4-2 — the balanced two-striker baseline
Choose 4-4-2 if you want two strikers and a four-player midfield that can support attacks or recover defensively. The cited guide describes two central midfielders and two strikers, and suggests balanced tactics with fullback roles as its own approach. Its main practical appeal is a clear two-forward shape without giving up midfield width; whether it fits depends on having suitable wide midfielders and two usable strikers.

2. 4-2-3-1 (2) — central protection with a creator
This variant suits a squad with strong midfield options and a preference for a defensive base behind one striker. The guide describes two CDMs, a CAM and one ST, with balanced build-up and defensive approach as its suggested starting point. It trades the second striker for a central creator and extra protection in front of the defense. Check the exact formation label in your FC 25 tactics menu; the source also calls it 4-2-3-1 Wide.
3. 4-3-3 (3) — wide attack with two holding midfielders
Try this if your best attackers are wingers and you want a central striker, while keeping two CDMs for cover. The guide characterizes it as an aggressive option and suggests balanced settings with default positional tactics. It gives you a different front line from the two-striker systems above, so it is a natural fit only if you have suitable wide forwards. The guide’s heading identifies this as 4-3-3 (3); a sentence in its text appears to contain a 4-4-3 typo, so use the in-game label as your reference.
Rank #2
4. 4-2-2-2 — a two-striker alternative
The guide names 4-2-2-2 among formations it has tried, but does not provide an equivalent breakdown or detailed tactical recommendation. Consider it if you want to build around two strikers and have players who suit the positions shown in the game. Before committing, check whether the available wide or attacking-midfield positions match your squad’s natural positions and role familiarity.
5. 4-4-1-1 — one striker with a supporting attacker
The guide also names 4-4-1-1 as a formation it has tried, without a comparable evaluation. It is a possible alternative if you want a main striker with another attacker playing behind or around that forward. Treat that as a squad-fit reason to experiment, not evidence that it performs better than the top three; inspect the displayed positions and roles before moving players into the shape.
Rank #3

6. 4-5-1 — a midfield-heavy option to test
4-5-1 appears in the guide’s list of formations it has tried or that have historically been good, but the article does not offer a detailed assessment. It may be worth testing if your roster has several midfielders and you are comfortable building around a lone striker. The source does not establish how well this shape attacks or defends in current play, so evaluate it with your own players rather than assuming the extra midfield presence guarantees control.
7. 4-3-3 (4) — a more central attacking-midfield look
This is a reasoned alternative for a squad built around a central attacking midfielder as well as a striker and wide forwards. Unlike the well-described 4-3-3 (3), the specific recommendation in the cited guide does not cover this variant. Confirm its positions and roles in FC 25 before using it; EA notes that formation variants determine available positions and roles, so a similar formation number does not guarantee the same structure.

8. 4-1-2-1-2 (2) — a narrow, central route to goal
Try this variant if you prefer a central combination through a CAM and two strikers over an attack led by wingers. It is included here as a shape-based alternative, not as a source-backed meta pick. Its suitability depends on the exact positions and roles available in your tactics menu and whether your squad can fill them without relying heavily on out-of-position assignments.

9. 3-5-2 — three center-backs and two forwards
This is a more specialized option for a roster with suitable center-backs, midfielders and two strikers. The formation name indicates a back three, but EA’s role system and the chosen players still shape how the team behaves; the formation alone does not establish a particular defensive result. It is a sensible experiment if your squad fits that personnel pattern, not a claim of superior performance or a recommendation from the cited detailed guide.

Match the formation to your squad and tactics
- Count the forwards you can actually use. 4-4-2 and 4-2-2-2 accommodate two-striker preferences; 4-2-3-1 (2) is built around one ST and a CAM; 4-3-3 (3) uses a central striker with two wingers.
- Check natural positions and role familiarity. EA says out-of-position players can be assigned simplified roles and may perform at lower quality. Prefer a shape your roster can fill with players suited to the positions and roles.
- Choose build-up style deliberately. EA describes Short Passing as patient, with players coming short; Balanced as a mix of support and forward runs; and Counter as encouraging runs in behind and quicker transitions.
- Set defensive risk for your comfort level. EA lists Deep, Balanced, High and Aggressive approaches. Aggressive combines a high line, immediate pressure after loss and offside traps, with additional stamina drain; it is a trade-off, not a default setting for every formation.
- Use a preset as a starting point, not proof of a best tactic. EA says presets can help start a setup, and custom tactics can be shared with an 11-digit code encoding the formation, build-up style, defensive approach and selected roles/focuses.
EA’s FC IQ launch material describes 31 roles and 52 role/focus combinations; those are system-description counts, not evidence that a particular formation wins more often. The same FC IQ material notes formation adjustments for FC 25, including removal of 4-3-3 (5) and a change to 4-3-2-1, whose two CF positions became CAMs. Verify the exact variant in the game rather than relying on a formation name from another FC title.
What the ranking can—and cannot—tell you
No win-rate, pick-rate, goal or competitive-results comparison for these nine formations is established here. The detailed three recommendations come from a dated Ultimate Team guide, and its author cautions that updates and player releases can change which tactics are in style. Use the top three as practical starting points for common squad needs; treat the remaining entries as experiments whose value depends on your players and preferred approach.
